DEACON LACHLAN On Wednesday coming, November 1st, we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints. In church terms, whenever we celebrate a Solemnity it means it s a feast day of great importance. When we think about it for a moment.celebrating the lives of all those saints who have gone before us.this certainly is cause for a great celebration. It is an opportunity for us to remember all the saints and martyrs, known and unknown, throughout Christian history, and as such, we remember them in the greatest way possible.. by participating at Holy Mass on this day set aside to honor them. Remembering saints and martyrs and dedicating a specific day to them each year has been a Christian tradition since the 4th century AD, but there were so many martyrs in the early church, that it became impossible to give each one his or her own feast day. In 609AD Pope Boniface IV decided to remember all martyrs and designated one day as the Feast of All Holy Martyrs, to be celebrated on May 13th. Later, in 837AD, Pope Gregory IV extended the feast to remember all the saints, changed its name to Feast of All Saints and changed the date to 1st November. All Souls Day is celebrated on 2nd November, the day after All Saints Day, and is an opportunity for Roman Catholics to commemorate the faithful departed. We remember and pray for the souls of those who are in Purgatory. the place in which those who have died atone for their less grave sins before being granted the vision of God in Heaven. Through the power of prayer and self-denial, the faithful on earth may be able to help these souls gain the Beatific Vision, and bringing them eternal happiness. Here at Holy Spirit, we honor our departed loved ones in a particular way during this month of November. The whole month is designated as The Month of the Holy Souls. We don t know if our departed loved ones have already reached heaven although they may have done..but we remember all of them during this month with our Holy Souls Novena of Masses in case they still need our prayers to attain the Beatific Vision. In addition we will remember all our loved ones, and all who have passed away during the last year, at a special Memorial Mass on Sunday November 5th at 11am. All the Holy Souls envelopes which we receive will be placed on the altar at this Mass, and the names of all who were buried from Holy Spirit in the last 12 months will be read. Just as the Pope made All Saints Day because there were too many to give each one their own day, for All Souls, we can only read out the names from the past year, but all the names on the Holy Souls envelopes will be remembered at the Novena of Masses, beginning with this special Mass on November 5th. Please join us on Sunday November 5th at the 11am Mass, for this special celebration, as we remember those whom we loved and will continue to love, into eternity. May almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -3-

Wednesday, November 1st is The Solemnity of All Saints, and is a Holy Day of Obligation. The schedule of Masses is shown below: Tuesday Evening 5:00 PM Wednesday 8:30 AM 12:10 PM 7:30 PM As Catholics, we have a serious obligation to attend and participate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on the Solemnity of All Saints. Confirmation Day at Holy Spirit Monday, October 16, 2017-4-

All Soul s Day Envelopes We are approaching November, traditionally the month of the Holy Souls. A Novena of Masses is offered up during the month for our deceased friends and relatives. If you wish to have a loved one remembered at this Novena, there are envelopes available throughout the church, where you may list the names of your loved ones. The envelopes can be dropped in the collection basket at any of the Sunday Masses over the next few weeks. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen LET US PRAY For Those Who Died in the Lord Patrick J.
