g. The Beast Out of the Earth (13:11-18) This is the last of the seven personages mentioned in Revelation 12 through 13. The information about Israel, the Dragon, the Messiah, Michael, the Offspring of the Woman, the Beast of the Sea, and now the Beast helps us to understand the events of the last half of the Tribulation, as well as the significance of the final trumpet blast. The work of this final personage helps to explain how the dragon managed to persecute the Offspring of the Woman believers who resided outside of the divinely protected refuge for Israel. Also known as the False Prophet (16:13; 19:20), the second beast will establish a worldwide spiritual religion which will undoubtedly provide the moral basis for a future genocide of God s people. All of this is part of the dragon s plan to thwart the purposes of God. As we survey the work of the False Prophet, we garner a glimpse into the motivations and methods of other false religions. i. The Description of the Beast (vs. 11): Observation Question: How does verse 11 describe the Beast? Another Beast: The Greek word for another implies another of the same kind. There will be a strong resemblance between this beast and the first beast. Both are Satanically-inspired humans bent on the destruction of God s people, imbued with different roles and abilities. In this case, the False Prophet will be the main religious henchman of the Antichrist, commissioned to build a one-world religion around him. - His Origin: In contrast to the first beast, who emerged out of the sea, this beast comes up out of the earth. As mentioned earlier, the ancients perceived the sea to be the origin of the most terrible and frightening monsters, thus this beast s terrestrial origin suggests a scaled-back ferocity. - Two Horns: Unlike the Antichrist who had ten horns symbolizing great power, this beast will have two. Certainly he will be powerful, but his power will be only a fraction of the Antichrist s. - Like a Lamb: In contrast to the ferocious beast of the Antichrist, the False Prophet will be a tender lamb. This subtle Satanic prophet will meekly and humbly lead the world down the highway to hell. Thought Question: Why do you suppose the False Prophet manifests the meekness of a lamb? How will this accomplish Satan s purposes? (2 Cor. 11:13-15) 76

Meekness is a subtle way of imitating Christ. It makes him non threatening and endearing to most people so that they will welcome him with open arms. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds. - Spoke as a Dragon: Though the beast is meek and gentle like a lamb, he speaks Satanically-inspired utterances. Thought Question: What modern day religious platitudes are Satanically inspired? There are many answers to this question including: 1. We all worship the same God. 2. God accepts everyone they way they are. 3. If God made you a certain way you do not have to change. 4. We all go to heaven.... Even the words of the infamous John Lennon song, Imagine: Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today... Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace... ii. The Ministry of the Beast (vv. 12-16) Observation Question: What activities and works does the Beast perform in vv. 12-16? 77

- He exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. Just like the dragon gave the Antichrist his power and his throne and great authority (13:2), so too does the Antichrist give the false prophet all of his authority. The parallels between Satan, the Antichrist, and the False Prophet on the one hand, and the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit on the other, are striking: the False Prophet gives glory to the Antichrist, and the Antichrist gives glory to the Dragon; further, just as Christ rose from the dead, so too does the Antichrist mimic this miracle. Thought Question: Why do you suppose Satan so closely counterfeits Christianity (Matt. 24:24)? Satan loves it when people adhere to the blatantly false religions because they already turn away from God. Satan desires to see those who hold to the truth, reject the God of the Bible. Thus, he subtly seduces Christians away from the faith. Matthew 24:24 24 For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. - Leads the inhabitants of the world to worship the first beast (vs. 12): As the henchman of the Antichrist, the False Prophet sets out to rally the world around his master whose fatal wound was healed. The resuscitation of the Antichrist seems to provide the platform for emperor worship. - Performs Great Signs (vs. 13): In order to support his prophetic office, the False Prophet will call down fire from heaven. This recounts the miracle of Elijah, who when engaged in a duel with the prophets of Baal called down fire from heaven to consume a water-soaked sacrifice (1 Kings 18:20-40). Elijah also called down fire from heaven to incinerate the soldiers sent from king Ahab. This miracle is intimately associated with Elijah, who the Old Testament teaches will return to announce the coming of the Messiah (Mal. 4:5-6). Thought Question: Why do you suppose the False Prophet imitates Elijah? How is he trying to portray the Antichrist? John the Baptist who came in the spirit of Elijah was the forerunner to Christ. This is in fulfillment of Malachi 4:5: 5 Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD. For the Jews who rejected Jesus, the Antichrist will have claim to the Messianic prophecies as the False Prophet takes on the role of Elijah. 78

- He Manufactures an Image of the Beast (vs. 14-16): At first, the False Prophet appeals to the masses to worship the Beast on account of his resurrection and the miraculous works of this new religious leader. As this new religion catches on, the False Prophet uses the momentum manufactured by this sign-based faith to enforce worldwide emperor worship. Taking a page from Nebuchadnezzar, he constructs a large statue of the Antichrist. Through God s permission, the false prophet will imbue this statue with supernatural power, and it will be able to speak as well as kill anyone who does not bow down to worship. This act is nothing new, but has been a means of persecution of Christians throughout the ages. Consider the insights of one commentator: Throughout the centuries images of one kind or another have been raised, and people have worshiped and bowed down to them. They include Nebuchadnezzar s golden image, Antiochus Epiphanes altar of Zeus in the temple of Jerusalem, the attempt of Caligula to have his statue placed in that same temple, the statue of Domitian in the temple of Ephesus, the swastika of Hitler in Nazi Germany, and the hammer and sickle in the former Soviet Union. John reflects the historical context and culture of his age in which Christians were forced to participate in emperor worship. The pervading presence of temples and statues dedicated to Roman emperors was overpowering for the followers of Christ in the province of Asia. 36 Thought Question: How will true Christians withstand the pressure to bow down to the idol? Only by the grace of God given to them so that they may be able to endure temptation. 1 Corinthians 10:13 13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. iii. The Mark of the Beast (vv. 16-17) Observation Questions: According to verses 16-17 who receives the mark, where do they take the mark, and why do they take it? 36 Kistemaker, Simon J., and William Hendriksen. Vol. 20, New Testament Commentary : Exposition of the Book of Revelation. Accompanying biblical text is author's translation. New Testament Commentary, Page 391. Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1953-2001. 79

In order to enforce worldwide emperor worship, the False Prophet mandates that all people, no matter their age, wealth, and social standing, take a mark. This practice is not without precedence. A Greco-Egyptian king had similarly required Jews to be branded with the ivy leaf, the emblem of Dionysus (3 Maccabees 2:28 29). 37 This emblem signified allegiance to the Greek god. In the same way, the mark of the beast demonstrates acceptance of the one-world religion and devotion to the beast. Thought Question: Why do you suppose this empire, or for that matter other worldwide empires, seek to have their citizens worship the government? It is a way of securing absolute devotion and loyalty. You see this in the communist regimes where the government replaces religion with itself. The placement of the mark on the hands and the head parodies God s command to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 6:8: "And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. God s purpose for Israel was that the Law of God should govern everything one does with his hands and every thought contemplated in his head. In the same way, this new religion of the Antichrist mandates its followers to commit the work of their hands and the thoughts of their heads to the Beast. Without this mark the residents of the world cannot buy or sell goods, merchandise, and food. This places Christians in an extremely precarious position, as the third seal (6:5-6) has already told of worldwide famine and the scarcity of food. Thus, many Christians (except for those supernaturally fed in the wilderness) will starve at the hands of this new world system. Thought Question: What means does the false prophet use to win and keep converts? What means do many major cults use to accomplish that end as well? He uses among other things total financial reliance. Where to break away from the cult would devastate one s financial status. In the same way, many cults help their members by supplying good jobs or cliental for their business. If the member breaks away, they lose it all. In verse 17, John explains that the mark is either the name of the beast or the number of his name. Verse 18 discloses how to discern the number of his name, helping to reveal the identity of the Antichrist to the Christians living in the Tribulation. iv. The Identity of the Antichrist (vs. 18) Observation: What clue does verse 18 give us with regards to the Beast s identity? 3 Maccabees 3 Maccabees. A historical novel of Alexandrian Judaism; it may have been written in the first century B.C. 37 Keener, Craig S., and InterVarsity Press. The IVP Bible Background Commentary : New Testament, Re 13:16. Downers Grove, Ill.: InterVarsity Press, 1993. 80

In verse 18, John pauses to disclose the identity of the Beast and the meaning of the number. Many interpreters contend that the term 666 has symbolic significance. They reason that since seven is the perfect number, one short of seven represents imperfection, and the threefold repetition of imperfection thus symbolizes the complete imperfection of the Antichrist. Yet this technique does not require calculation, but merely discerning the symbolic meaning of various numbers. John s call to count or calculate implies that the meaning of 666 is found through some sort of arithmetic. The process of discerning someone s name through numbers was not foreign to the ancient Jews; many Jews used the practice of gematria to do this. One dictionary defines gematria as One of the rabbinic hermeneutic rules for interpreting the OT. It consisted of explaining a word or group of words according to the numerical value of the letters or by substituting and rearranging certain letters according to a set system. 38 Essentially, gematria assigns each letter of the alphabet a numerical value, and then the sum of the value is applied to the word. For example, the numerical value of Jesus in the Roman alphabet would be 74, because J is the 10 th letter in the alphabet, E the 5 th, S the 19 th, U the 21 st, and S the 19 th. The sum of all of those numbers would be 74. Thus, if you wanted to speak in code you could use the term 74 to signify Jesus. Although this is not a valid hermeneutical tool for deciphering the meaning of a text, it is widely practiced in many cultures (especially Hasidic Judaism). In relating this to Revelation, we can conclude that the name of the Antichrist (which has yet to be revealed) will somehow have a numerical value of 666 (the number of a man). We do not know which alphabet will be used or precisely how Christians in the future will figure this out, but this verse will provide thinking Christians further confirmation of the identity of the Antichrist. Thought Question: Why do you suppose God would want us to wait until the future to clearly identify the Antichrist? What is the danger of projecting it on everyone from Henry Kissinger to Bill Clinton? God commands us in Titus 2:1-2: 1 But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. 2 Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance. It would be very difficult to pray for our leaders if we continually speculate that they might be the antichrist. 38 Elwell, Walter A., and Philip Wesley Comfort. Tyndale Bible Dictionary.
