Order of Worship Prelude Welcome and greetings All Hail the Power of Jesus Name! Joe Novenson, senior teaching pastor * Call to worship based on Psalm 145 Leader: Come, let us worship our King! All: Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise! Leader: One generation will commend your works to another; they will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness. All: Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise! Leader: All you have made will praise you, O Lord; your saints will extol you. They will tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might, so that all may know of your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. All: We will praise the Lord with our mouths. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever. Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise! * Hymn of praise 2, vv. 1, 2, 6 O Worship the King * Prayer of adoration * Affirmation of faith The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary,

and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets; and we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church; we acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory Untitled Hymn (Come to Jesus) Chancel Choir Weak and wounded sinner, lost and left to die, raise your head, for love is passing by. Come to Jesus, come to Jesus, come to Jesus and live! Now your burden s lifted and carried far away, and precious blood has washed away the stain. So sing to Jesus, sing to Jesus, sing to Jesus and live! And like a newborn baby, don t be afraid to crawl. Remember when you walk sometimes you fall. So fall on Jesus, fall on Jesus, fall on Jesus and live! Sometimes the way is lonely and steep and filled with pain. So if your sky is dark and pours the rain, cry to Jesus, cry to Jesus, cry to Jesus and live! And when the love spills over and music fills the night, and when you can t contain your joy inside, dance for Jesus, dance for Jesus, dance for Jesus and live! And with your final heartbeat, kiss the world goodbye then go in peace, and laugh on glory s side, and fly to Jesus, fly to Jesus, fly to Jesus and live! words and music by Chris Rice; arr. Robert Sterling

* Gloria Patri 735 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. * Prayer of dedication and thanksgiving * Scripture reading from Mark 7:14-23 Olivia Oster (9:30) p. 1564 in pew Bible and text printed in the bulletin Laura Broussard (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayer of preparation for the study of God s Word Sermon The True Source of Sin Frank Hitchings, senior associate pastor Pastoral prayer Sacrament of the Lord s Supper Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church welcomes all baptized Christians to receive the Sacrament of the Lord s Supper who have previously been admitted to the table of the Lord by the elders of this or any Gospel-proclaiming church. Come with joy as you actively trust in Christ and willingly forsake sin, having sought reconciliation in all relationships. Invitation to the Lord s Table Call to confession Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Hymn of confession 507, vv. 1, 3, 5 Approach, My Soul, the Mercy Seat Silent prayers of confession Assurance of God s pardoning grace taken from 2 Corinthians 5 and Ephesians 2 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ... not counting men s sins against them. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast.

Words of institution Communion affirmation Leader: Therefore we proclaim the faith: All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Prayer of consecration Distribution of the elements For the bread 430 For the cup I Hunger and I Thirst Just as I Am All: Soloist: All: Just as I am, without one plea but that thy blood was shed for me, and that thou bidd st me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. Just as I am and waiting not to rid my soul of one dark blot, to thee whose blood can cleanse each spot, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. We come broken to be mended. We come wounded to be healed. We come desperate to be rescued. We come empty to be filled. We come guilty to be pardoned by the blood of Christ, the Lamb. And I m welcomed with open arms, praise God, just as I am. Just as I am, thy love unknown has broken ev ry barrier down; now, to be thine, yea, thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. words by Charlotte Elliott and William Bradbury; arr. Mark 7:14-23 14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a man can make him unclean by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him unclean. 17 After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. 18 Are you so dull? he asked. Don t you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him unclean? 19 For it doesn t go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body. (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean. ) 20 He went on: What comes out of a man is what makes him unclean. 21 For from within, out of men s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and make a man unclean.

SERMON NOTES The True Source of Sin Mark 7:14-23 1. The presumed source of sin: external factors (vv. 14-19) 2. The actual source of sin: the human heart (vv. 20 23) 3. The only antidote to sin: a radical change of heart Ezekiel 36:26-27, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.
