If you are a guest or visitor with us today, we ask that you wait to receive Holy ommunion until you ve had a chance to learn what we believe and teach. Please speak to Pastor or Vicar about joining us in the future. Parents of small children, we are so thankful that you have brought your child(ren) to worship this morning. We love hearing children in worship, but also understand that there may be times when you want to take them out for a little while. For this reason there is a nursery with an audio feed of the service. Today s Worship Today we celebrate the festival of The Name of Jesus. We remember that wonderful name that ary and Joseph gave their son, eight days after he was born, as commanded by the angel. As we reflect on the past year with all of its blessings and challenges, we thank God for his grace, and pray for his continued blessing in the New Year. Today we set our hearts on the timeless Savior who came to begin his work of salvation when the time had fully come. The symbol above is one of the earliest and most common hristian symbols. The I-H-S are actually the first three Greek letters of the name Jesus (IHSOUS). Variants of this symbol have adorned hristian churches, jewelry, art and gravestones for nearly 2000 years. 2
THE OON SERVIE OPENING HYN: Help Us, O Lord, for Now We Enter hristian Worship 70 Our opening hymn was originally titled, Godly beginning of the New Year in and with the most sweet name of Jesus. It s a fitting beginning for our celebration of The Name of Jesus at the beginning of the year. Stand In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen ONFESSION OF SINS Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus hrist to grant us forgiveness. Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus hrist, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of hrist and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. Amen RESPONSIVE SONG OF PRAISE HOIR: OF THE FATHER S LOVE BEGOTTEN 3
PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you Let us pray. Eternal Son of God, on this day you were called Jesus, a name that proclaims you to be the Savior of all people. Give us strength in the new year to live each day to the honor of your name; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen THE WORD FIRST LESSON: Numbers 6:22-27 God blesses us when he puts his name on us. He claims us as his own and promises us his love. 22 The LORD said to oses, 23 Tell Aaron and his sons, This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: 24 The LORD bless you and keep you; 25 the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; 26 the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace. 27 So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them. Stand THE GOSPEL: Luke 2:21 The naming of Jesus 21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise him, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he had been conceived. 4
NIENE REED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus hrist, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin ary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy hristian and apostolic hurch. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE SERON TEXT: Philippians 2:9-13 The name of Jesus calls for all honor and calls us to live for him 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus hrist is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-- not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence-- continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Keep Serving the Exalted hrist After the sermon, the congregation sings the reate in e. 6
OFFERING Our offerings are both an expression of thankfulness for what our Savior has done for us, and a way of supporting the spread of the gospel through the hurch s work. PRAYER OF THE HURH It is fitting, O Lord, at the beginning of this new year, to express our gratitude for the countless gifts of grace we have received from you in this past year. You have been faithful to your promises and loving toward all you have made. You clothe your creation with beauty; you feed even the birds and tell us that we are much more valuable than they. You know what we need, and you give us all good things. lothing and food, safety and health, possessions and money, even life itself all these come to us from your generous hand. We thank you for these blessings, and we ask that you continue to grant them to us. We thank you especially for your Word and your Holy Supper, which strengthen our faith, help us in our battle against temptation, and equip us for service. Increase our commitment to your Word, and help us to prioritize our lives in the New Year so that we may continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus hrist. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. Silent prayer. Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Almighty and eternal God, you have been gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, and rich in love. As you led your people Israel with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, so lead us by the light of your Word that we may live our lives to your glory and be prepared to die in your peace. We ask these things in the name of Jesus. In his name we begin this new year; in his name may we serve you. Amen. 7
LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. PREFAE THE SARAENT The Lord be with you. And also with you Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: 8
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Sanctus WORDS OF INSTITUTION Our Lord Jesus hrist, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins.
