ELEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST God s Work in Us Presentation By NYG Participants July 30-31, 2016 AS WE GATHER What s the point? we ask. Whether at the beginning or at the end of a busy day, a gutwrenching week, or a difficult season in life, it s easy to question the purpose of it all. Today s worship is geared toward those who ask the question What s the point? God s Word shows us the point and the purpose of our life in Christ, filling us with wisdom from above. The wise person learns this truth: God is working! God is working even as we rest in His presence. Right here, right now, in this service set before you, Jesus is laboring for our benefit and blessing! Working through Word and Sacrament, Jesus is here to forgive your sins, to refresh your soul, and to fill you with joy in His presence! WELCOME What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.(2 Tim. 1:13-14) HANDSHAKES & HUGS PREPARATION OPENING HYMN #818 In Thee Is Gladness In Thee is gladness Amid all sadness, Jesus sunshine of my heart. By Thee are given The gifts of heaven, Thou the true Redeemer art. Our souls Thou wakest, Our bonds Thou breakest; Who trust Thee surely Has built securely; He stands forever: Alleluia! Our hearts are pining To see Thy shining, Dying or living To Thee are cleaving; Naught can us sever: Alleluia! Since He is ours, We fear no powers, Not of earth nor sin nor death. He sees and blesses In worst distresses; He can change them with a breath. Wherefore the story Tell of His glory With hearts and voices; All heav n rejoices In Him forever: Alleluia! We shout for gladness, Triumph o er sadness, Love Him and praise Him And still shall raise Him Glad hymns forever: Alleluia! 1 INVOCATION & OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Pastor: If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, People: where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Pastor: Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. People: For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Pastor: When Christ who is your life appears, People: then you also will appear with Him in glory. CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Pastor: With minds and hearts set on things above, let us bow before our God. Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. People: Almighty God, we come before you in the name of Him who sits at your right hand, Jesus Christ, our Lord. We admit that we have sinned against you and against one another in our thoughts, words, and deeds. We deserve only your wrath and condemnation. Yet we know from your Holy Word that you love us and have sent your Son to rescue and deliver us. By His death, He has destroyed our death. By His rising again, He has brought us life and light. Forgive and renew us today, filling us with joy in your presence. Pastor: Almighty God, in His great mercy, has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sin. His joyful work is to redeem and restore you through Jesus death and resurrection! Upon this your confession, I, as a servant of Christ and as your pastor, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. HYMN OF PRAISE #527 O Savior, Precious Savior Stanzas 1 & 2 2 continued O Savior, precious Savior, Whom yet unseen we love; O name of might and favor, All other names above, We worship Thee, we bless Thee, To Thee, O Christ, we sing; We praise Thee and confess Thee, Our holy Lord and King.

O bringer of salvation, Who wondrously hast wrought Thyself the revelation Of love beyond our thought, We worship Thee, we bless Thee, To Thee, O Christ, we sing; We praise Thee and confess Thee, Our gracious Lord and King. SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. O Lord, grant us wisdom to recognize the treasures you have stored up for us in heaven, where your Son is seated at your right hand. Help us to find purpose in our labor and joy in your promise to always be with us; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12 14; 2:18 26 (Those who are wise find God-given joy in their labor.) "Meaningless! Meaningless!" says the Teacher. "Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless." I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. I devoted myself to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid on men! I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind. I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the work into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then he must leave all he owns to someone who has not worked for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun? All his days his work is pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is meaningless. A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. 3 EPISTLE Colossians 3:1 11 (Life in Christ changes our priorities.) Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. HOLY GOSPEL Luke 12:13 21 (Jesus warns us of the devastating power of greed.) Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?" Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.' "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry."' "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God." SERMON HYMN In Christ Alone In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light my strength my song This Cornerstone this solid Ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love what depths of peace When fears are stilled when strivings cease My Comforter my All in All Here in the love of Christ I stand 4 continued

DISTRIBUTION Those guests who desire to commune who are members of another LCMS congregation may do so; if you are coming from another church background, please see the pastor or an elder first. HYMN #525 Crown Him With Many Crowns Crown Him with many crowns, The Lamb upon His throne; Hark how the heav nly anthem drowns All music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing Of Him who died for thee, And hail Him as thy matchless king Through all eternity. Crown Him the virgin s Son, The God incarnate born, Whose arm those crimson trophies won Which now His brow adorn: Fruit of the mystic rose, Yet of that rose the stem, The root whence mercy ever flows, The babe of Bethlehem. Crown Him the Lord of love. Behold His hands and side, Rich wounds, yet visible above, In beauty glorified. No angels in the sky Can fully bear that sight. But downward bend their wond ring eyes At mysteries so bright. Crown Him the Lord of life, Who triumphed o er the grave And rose victorious in the strife For those He came to save. His glories now we sing, Who died and rose on high, Who died eternal life to bring And lives that death may die. 6 continued

Crown Him the Lord of heav n, Enthroned in worlds above, Crown Him the king to whom is giv n The wondrous name of Love. Crown Him with many crowns As thrones before Him fall; Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns, For He is king of all. HYMN #822 Alleluia! Let Praises Ring Alleluia! Let praises ring! To God the Father let us bring Our songs of adoration. To Him through everlasting days Be worship, honor, pow r, and praise, Whose hand sustains creation. Singing, ringing: Holy, holy, God is holy; Spread the story Of our God, the Lord of glory. Alleluia! Let praises ring! Unto the Lamb of God we sing, In whom we are elected. He bought His Church with His own blood, He cleansed her in that blessed flood, And as His bride selected. Holy, holy, Is our union And communion. His befriending Gives us joy and peace unending. Alleluia! Let praises ring! Unto the Holy Ghost we sing For our regeneration. The saving faith in us He wrought And us unto the Bridegroom brought, Made us His chosen nation. Glory! Glory! Joy eternal, Bliss supernal; There is manna And an endless, glad hosanna. Alleluia! Let praises ring! Unto our triune God we sing; Blest be His name forever! With angel hosts let us adore And sing His praises evermore For all His grace and favor! Singing, ringing: Holy, holy, God is holy; Spread the story Of our God, the Lord of glory! HYMN #813 Rejoice, O Pilgrim Throng Rejoice, O pilgrim Throng! Rejoice, give thanks and sing; Your festal banner wave on high, The cross of Christ your king. Refrain Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice, give thanks, and sing! With voice as full and strong As ocean s surging praise, Send forth the sturdy hymns of old, The psalms of ancient days. Refrain With all the angel choirs, With all the saints on earth Pour out the strains of joy and bliss, True rapture, noblest mirth. Refrain Yet on and onward still, With hymn and chant and song, Through gate and porch and columned aisle The hallowed pathways throng. 7 Refrain Still lift your standard high, Still march in firm array, As pilgrims through the darkness wend Till dawns the golden day. Refrain At last the march shall end; The wearied ones shall rest; The pilgrims find their home at last, Jerusalem the blest. Refrain Praise Him who reigns on high, The Lord whom we adore: The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, One God forevermore. Refrain COMMON DISMISSAL POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING Pastor: Let us pray. We give thanks to you, almighty God, that you have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore you that of your mercy you would strengthen us through the same in faith toward you and in fervent love toward one another.
