The Roman Missal: Where We ve Been and Where We re Going Andrew Casad, MTS, MA Director of Liturgy and Catechumenate, St Thomas More Catholic Church, Chapel Hill Diocese Of Raleigh 2011

The Roman Missal Where We ve Been Almighty God, grant, we pray, to your faithful people, the will to run to meet Christ with good deeds at his coming, so that, gathered at his right hand, they may be worthy to possess the heavenly kingdom. Through Christ our Lord... - Collect for First Sunday of Advent

The Roman Missal... Where We ve Been...is the book used by the celebrant at Mass....contains the Ordinary of the Mass (unchanging canon) and the Propers (formularies, or prayers, for each day)....is arranged according to both temporal and sanctoral calendars....is translated from a Latin-language typical edition into the vernacular languages in which the Mass is prayed....is currently called the Sacramentary in English.

Development of the Roman Missal Libelli and the codification of liturgy (up to the AD 550). Sacramentaries and liturgical unification (circa 600-850). Missals before the Council of Trent (11th century - 1570). The Missale Romanum until the Second Vatican Council (1570-1965). The editions of the Missale Romanum (1965-2011): interim translations, revised Orders of Mass (1965-1970). Missale Romanum latina (1970), 1973 in English. Missale Romanum altera (1975), 1985 in English, Ordo retained: revised ICEL translations (1983-1998) set aside. Missale Romanum tertia (2002), 2011 in English (GIRM in 2002).

Missale Romanum tertia......will be promulgated on the First Sunday of Advent 2011 (November 27, 2011: the Sunday after Thanksgiving)....includes new elements (e.g., vigils for Ascension and Epiphany, new prefaces, additional memorials for saints, etc.)....incorporates some existing material (e.g., Votive Masses for the Blessed Virgin Mary, Sacramentary Supplements, clarifications)....does not include any changes in rubrics/directions (viz., the GIRM and particular Norms for Raleigh remain)....was completely retranslated in accord with Liturgiam Authenticam calling for a closer, formal adherence to the Latin typical edition.

Why are we getting a new translation? To make our prayer resemble Latin more closely as a way of retaining our Latin patrimony in order to hear scriptural and Patristic resonances. To improve the translations based on the positive, lived, pastoral experience of praying in the vernacular. To create a dignified language, a sacred register. To better harmonize the English words with those of other language groups. To have a solid base text in English.

Roman Missal, third edition......will include changes in nearly all of the people s texts: Dialogues. Gloria. Creed. Eucharistic Acclamations (Sanctus, Mystery of Faith). Lamb of God. as well as many changes in the presider s texts (e.g., collects).

Roman Missal, third edition The Lord be with you. r And also with you. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just.

Roman Missal, third edition Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;... Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;...

Roman Missal, third edition...you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen....you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Roman Missal, third edition We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

Roman Missal, third edition For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

Roman Missal, third edition We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Missale Romanum tertia Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Roman Missal, third edition This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Behold the Lamb of God behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

Roman Missal, third edition Let your Spirit come upon these gifts to make them holy, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the Body and Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Take this, all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me. Take this, all of you, and drink from it: for this is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant; which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.

The Sacramentary (1985) What has been your experience of the present rite? What will you miss?

Roman Missal, third edition What will be new and exciting? What challenges remain? How can you continue to move toward fuller, conscious, and ever more active participation in the liturgy (SC 14)?

Implementing the Roman Missal Liturgy primarily uses gestures and symbols. Liturgical texts should be sung and chanted. We have the gift of this year to implement the Roman Missal together: through Lent: study key documents, liturgical catechesis (i.e., diocesan workshops, parish implementation teams). Lent 2011: focus our prayer on liturgical renewal. Easter and summer 2011: train parish leadership, get practical. Fall 2011: focus all attention (e.g., homilies, catechesis, introduce chant and music). Don t stop at Advent 2011: think about Christmas 2011, do mystagoical catechesis, engage with feedback.

Living the Liturgy Where We ve Been and Where We re Going Questions? Liturgy, like Christ and his Body, the Church, is not just fully human but also fully divine: liturgy is not just about rubrics, history, and texts but is also about the spiritual life, being transformed into Christ. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.
