The God who provides THE WORSHIP Supplies: Praise music, optional: musical instruments Teacher Tip: To help children identify time set aside for worship, designate a special corner or area for singing, collecting offering, and watching the worship illustration. Play It s Praise Time! as children move to that designated area. When we come to church and praise God, we are showing our love for Him. Let s pray and tell God how much we love Him. Have the children bow their heads and close their eyes. Dear God, we love You so much. Help us show Your love to others. Amen. Today, in our Bible story, we will hear how Cain and Abel were supposed to give their very best offering to God. Abel obeyed and gave the very best he had. We want to be like Abel and give our very best offering to God. At Praise Time, there are many offerings we can give, including singing songs of praise to God. Let s do that right now. Sing: Let Everything That Has Breath. Some of you brought money for an offering. Let s collect your money offering now while we sing another offering of praise. God blesses those who give Him their best. Sing: Blessed Are Those as the offering is collected. Let s see if our friends Delbert and Lello know about the brothers, Cain and Abel. Perform The Adventures of Delbert and Lello puppet script or read storybook: God of Wonders Unit 6, Lesson 28. Psalm 119:44a says, I will always obey your law. To obey means to follow the rules. Cain and Abel THE WORD Supplies: Teacher s Bible with bookmark at Genesis 4:7a, picture of the Bible story, offering basket Before we begin our Bible Time, let s say our Classroom Promise with the motions. With my eyes on my teacher; Point to eyes. My mouth quiet as can be, Place index finger over mouth as quiet sign. I will listen to hear, Cup hand around ear. How God loves you and me. Hug self, point to others, and then self. Let s reach deep in our pockets and pull out our listening ears. Reach in your pocket and cup your hands behind your ears as if listening. Hold up the offering basket. Who can tell me what this is? (Basket or offering basket.) Some of you brought money which we will collect in this basket. We call that money an offering; it is a gift to God. There are many things we can give to God as an offering. We can sing songs to praise Him, we can spend time talking with Him in prayer, or one great offering is to obey God by loving one another. Whatever we offer God, we always want to give Him our best. Today, we will hear about two brothers who gave offerings to God. One of them pleased God and the other did not. Let s find out what happened. Handle Bible as a special treasure, leaving it open to Genesis 4:7a. WATCH THE WORD: GENESIS 4:2B-7A Read the story below or retell the passage in your own words. To illustrate the story, show a picture of the Bible story from a children s Bible, the coloring page, or other source. Cain and Abel were brothers. Cain farmed the land all day. He gathered some crops as an offering, And gave them to the Lord one day. Abel also brought an offering to the Lord. He brought the very best lambs he had. The Lord was pleased with Abel but not with Cain. So Cain became very angry and his face was sad. The Lord asked Cain, "Why are you angry and sad? Do right. You will be accepted and you will be glad. Rejoice with your friends when they are blessed. Love one another and give God your best. Why was the Lord happy with Abel s offering? (He brought his best.) Cain was angry because God was happy with Abel. He did not show love to his brother. What does God want us to do to one another? (Love each other.) Page 6 of 11
