INTERNATIONAL PROJECT PROPOSAL PROJECT 0175 Our Lady of Mt. Carmel High School Scholarships for poor youth Benque Viejo, Belize My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. Proverbs 3:1-2

We are a Catholic ministry that serves the poorest of the poor internationally by channeling aid through dioceses, parishes and Catholic missionaries, cost-effectively helping the poor break the cycle of poverty while advancing Catholic evangelization. Rather than create new institutions to distribute aid, we support existing ministries and churches already serving the poor. In addition to being the most cost-effective way of helping the poor, empowering these ministries allows us to support the Church s spiritual mission and its important position of leadership in poor communities. We consider every gift we receive as a precious resource from God. We direct every donation to its intended project, provide honest and accurate reports to our donors, and keep overhead costs to an industry low. We handle funds with utmost integrity and hold our ministry partners in the field to the same high standards by asking them to document costs and the impact of their outreach. We invite you to join with us as we seek to transform the lives of the poor materially and spiritually ways that please the Father and glorify him in Heaven and on earth.

Project Synopsis Description Provide work-study scholarships for poor youth to attend a quality Catholic high school, and supply meals for volunteer teachers. Purpose To equip needy young people with the academic skills to overcome poverty and achieve self-sufficiency. Location Benque Viejo, a town about 80 miles west of Belize City, in the Central American country of Belize. Cost $58,575 will provide full work-study scholarships for 20 students, partial workstudy scholarships for an additional 26 students, and daily meals for 17 American volunteer teachers for an entire school year. Highlights Mt. Carmel s reputation for academic rigor and character formation has made it a school of choice in Belize. Its compassionate staff are also committed to meeting the educational needs of the poorest in the community, and they seek outside help to accomplish that noble goal. The school places special emphasis on imparting Catholic moral values and proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. To make this quality education accessible to youth who cannot afford tuition, Cross Catholic Outreach has committed to providing full and partial work-study scholarships for 46 students this year. Cross Catholic Outreach funding will also feed 17 American volunteer teachers whose free professional services help keep costs as low as possible. Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School was established as a secondary institution of life and human formation. As such, it remains faithful to the mandate of Jesus Christ to make true disciples who will give witness to Beauty, Truth and Goodness, and who will bear fruit for the Church and society in the wisdom and love of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. It is founded on Jesus Christ, the fount of graces, and on His Church, the Guardian of faith. Mission of Mt. Carmel High School 1

The Need: Quality Education to Break the Cycle of Poverty In Benque Viejo, Belize, a local priest saw that a lack of education was keeping many of his parishioners trapped in an endless cycle of poverty. The young people were too poor to enroll in school. Without a diploma, they had no hope of ever finding gainful employment or rising above a subsistence level existence. But without support, their families could not send them to school. Even a public education in Belize is unaffordable to the poorest families. They use every penny they can scrape together for basic needs such as food and shelter and have nothing left over for the required textbooks, uniforms and fees. They cannot invest in their children s future when the needs of the present outweigh all else. In response to this community-wide problem, the priest began a tutoring program in a small building in downtown Benque Viejo. Starting with just 57 students, he had a vision to educate poor teenagers, and the program became so successful that the parents voted to incorporate the program into a full-fledged Catholic high school at the end of the first academic year. A few months later, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel High School opened its doors as an official academic establishment, serving the poorest students in the community. Nicknamed The Miracle School by the local people, Mount Carmel gained a reputation for academic excellence and character formation. It began attracting desperately poor youth from across the border in neighboring Guatemala, as well as local students from more financially stable families. Today, the school is nurturing the hearts and minds of nearly 500 students of all socioeconomic backgrounds. Despite its local fame, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel has not strayed from its still-needed mission to the poor a mission that continues through the help of Cross Catholic Outreach. Former student Irma Solares crossed the nearby Guatemalan border to attend Mt. Carmel each weekday. Without the help of the work-study scholarship program, she would not have had the opportunity to attend a Catholic high school in a safe area like Benque Viejo. Coming from a dangerous neighborhood in Guatemala, Irma says she loves Mt. Carmel because It feels like a second home. It is the place where I feel safe. 2

The Ministry: Nurturing Hearts and Minds My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways. Proverbs 23:26 Our Lady of Mt. Carmel High School has a philosophy: never turn away young people who are willing to work hard to get an education, even if they can t afford it. This philosophy is the reason why the school is known for its high standards, successful graduates and Christ-like love for the poor. Few schools in Belize have married their practical goals and spiritual objectives as effectively! Today, this compassionate formula for change is being best expressed through work-study scholarships provided with the help of Cross Catholic Outreach. The Cross Catholic-sponsored scholarships give disadvantaged youth an educational experience that can literally transform their lives both materially and spiritually. Students begin each school day with prayers and devotion. Each Friday, the entire student body celebrates Mass together, giving students a formative experience of corporate worship. Ultimately, Mt. Carmel strives to create and equip disciples of Christ dedicated to faith, family and good citizenship. As a result, many young people participating in the program have converted to Catholicism and received the sacrament of baptism and first Communion. These transformed lives show that God is working through this ministry to capture the hearts of the young. Mt. Carmel keeps its academic standards high and operational costs low by recruiting American volunteer teachers. These volunteers come for a one or two year term of service after they graduate from college to teach and mentor Mt. Carmel s students. Though volunteers aren t paid, Mt. Carmel houses them near the campus and provides daily meals to make volunteering affordable. These volunteers exude a passion about their faith and learning that is contagious to the high school students they serve. They are teaching their students by word and deed how to walk the walk of the Christian life. Cross Catholic Outreach wants to ensure that no youth is ever turned away for economic reasons from this life-changing educational opportunity. This year, we have committed to providing 46 full and partial work-study scholarships for the students, and meals for 17 hardworking volunteer teachers. But we can t succeed without your help! More than Academics I have held students when their parents pass away, I have celebrated with students upon victories in competitions, I have laughed, prayed, and eaten with students and I look forward to continuing to learn from them with every day God has granted me here in Belize. The more I have come to know and learn about my students the more I come to physically feel the pain and sufferings that they go through. I have learned that I cannot change someone in just one day. Change must come from within and it is something that takes time. Sometimes the most important thing the students need is for someone to be present to them and to just listen. - Zachary Butz, Mt. Carmel High School Volunteer Teacher 3

Give the Gift of Catholic Education! Our Lady of Mt. Carmel High School has been a miracle to the town of Benque Viejo, bringing the hope of Christ into the lives and hearts of its students. But without scholarships, many of these young people would be forced to drop out of school and continue the cycle of poverty they were born into. That s why we need your help! A quality, Christ-centered education will lay the foundation for lives devoted and committed to the Lord s ways. Mt. Carmel is shaping the hearts and minds of its students, preparing them for success beyond the classroom. They are following the admonition of Scripture to be set-apart for God s good work through complete life transformation, Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God s will is his good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:2). Your gift to Cross Catholic Outreach will provide scholarships for poor youth, while also supporting the hardworking volunteers who are so crucial to this ministry. With your help, Mt. Carmel will shape the hearts and minds of its students, preparing them to break out of poverty, achieve self-sufficiency and live lives of godly character. This is a chance for you to invest in the future of the next generation won t you join us today? Our Promise to You! Proceeds from this campaign will be used to cover any expenditures for (this project) incurred through June 30, 2018, the close of our ministry s new fiscal year. In the event that more funds are raised than needed to fully fund the project, the excess funds, if any, will be used to meet the most urgent needs of the ministry. 4 2700 N.
