THE STUDY OF REVELATION

Transcription:

The REVELATION of JESUS CHRIST chapter 5 Lesson 10 Revelation 5 begins with a severe dilemma. John saw no one worthy to open the scroll and loose its seals. The chapter moves on to reveal the Solution, Jesus. It ends with praise not only of Him, but to Him. For He alone is worthy. OBSERVATION: Read Revelation 5 1. Read through this week s verses using both your Observation Worksheet (the last page of this homework) and another Bible translation or paraphrase. After reading through these verses, what would you say to someone if they asked you what they are about? 2. Key words help us to better understand the verses. We have listed below key words. Mark each one in a distinctive way (either with a symbol, highlighting, or some form of boxing, circling, or underlining). Mark each of the key words each time they are used in the text. You may find it difficult to identify whether a word is speaking of the Father or Jesus. For the purposes of this study, mark the words both ways. Remember to mark any personal pronouns. Key Words: God/Father (the One on the throne), Jesus (the Lamb), Holy Spirit (represented by the Seven Spirits of God), scroll (including it/its), four living creatures, elders, and slain Also mark verbs describing John s actions: saw, wept, looked, and heard 3. The word scroll (and references to it) is mentioned over twelve times in Revelation 5. Make a list of what this chapter reveals about the scroll. Jericho Road Christian Fellowship Women's Bible Studies 2013-2014 With much appreciation to the writing team of Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa

4. Two significant groups in chapter 5 are the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders. Make a list of what this chapter reveals about them that is similar. Similarities of four living creatures and twenty-four elders: a. What is mentioned only about the: four living creatures: twenty-four elders: a. Share one thing you observed from your lists that you did not see when you simply read the chapter. b. John wrote that he looked and he saw. Using your lists and the text of Revelation 5, draw (on a separate sheet of paper) what you think John saw. 1.) What did you observe by drawing the descriptions in chapter 5, that you did not notice when you made your lists? Read Revelation 5:1-4 1. Revelation 5:2a a. Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals? (Revelation 5:2b) Define the word worthy. 2

3. What was the dilemma of heaven? Revelation 5:3 a. Use Romans 3:10 12 to underscore this dilemma. 1.) Print Romans 3:23 here to further understand the need for the worthy one. b. Note the search that was conducted by listing the places that were searched according to Revelation 5:3b. 4. How did John react to this dilemma? Revelation 5:4a a. Why do you suppose his grief was so intense? Revelation 5:4b 1.) How would you have responded to this disheartening news? b. Identify the three actions concerning the scroll that no one was found worthy to open. 1.) What does this convey about the scroll? Read Revelation 5:5-7 1. As all of heaven was in an uproar and John was weeping, an elder spoke to him. What did this elder say? Revelation 5:5a a. What was John to Behold? Revelation 5:5b 1.) 3. What did John see standing in the midst of the throne? Revelation 5:6 a. How did the Lamb appear? b. What did the Lamb have? Revelation 5:6b 1.) How does Isaiah 11:1 2 enhance the meaning of this symbolism? 4. According to Revelation 5:7, what did the Lamb do? a. How did this show the worthiness of the Lamb? b. In your own words describe the worthiness of Jesus. Read Revelation 5:8-10 1. What was the reaction of heaven when the Lamb had taken the scroll? Revelation 5:8a a. Compare their actions with those of Revelation 4:10. What do you see? b. Why do you think falling down can be a significant expression of worship? 2. What did the elders and the living creatures have? Revelation 5:8b a. What does this say to you about the importance of your prayers? 3. Answer the following questions in regard to the song the elders and living creatures sang in Revelation 5:9: a. What was the Lamb worthy to do? b. What had the Lamb done? c. 4. Revelation 5:10 states another reason for the Lamb s worthiness. What is it? a. How does Revelation 5:10 foreshadow what will happen according to Revelation 20:6? 5. Recalling that no one else was found worthy to take the scroll, comment on the qualifications of the Lamb. 6. How did the four living creatures affirm the worthiness of Jesus? Revelation 5:14a a. What attributes and works of God can you affirm in your life today? 6. How did the twenty-four elders respond? What are just three things in your life that He is worthy of? a. In what ways will you increase your expressions to Jesus of His worthiness? Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, the power and the glory, the victory and the majesty; for all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and You are exalted as head over all. - 1 Chronicles 29:11 6

Observation Worksheet Revelation 5:1-14 1 And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2 Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?" 3 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it. 4 So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it. 5 But one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals." 6 And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. 8 Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying: "You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, 10 and have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth." 11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice: "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!" 13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: "Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!" 14 Then the four living creatures said, "Amen!" And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped Him who lives forever and ever. 7
