Holy Trinity Sunday at Abiding Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church Hampton, GA where families connect

ABIDING GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH June 4 th, 2017 Prayer before worship Dear God in heaven above, as your Holy Scriptures tell me, your ways are higher than my ways, and your thoughts higher than my thoughts (Isaiah 55:9). As I learn today about who you are, one God revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, open my heart to believe what you say is true and to rejoice that you have made me wise for salvation (2 Timothy 3:15). Amen. HOLY TRINITY SUNDAY W ELCOME TO GOD S HOUSE FOR WORSHIP THIS MORNING. We re glad you are here. In our service we gather before our Almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also gather to be strengthened through the study of God s holy and powerful Word and grow closer to one another. The Bulletin that you are holding has the entire Order of Service for today s worship printed out for you. Hymnals, the red books on the seats, are used for singing during our worship. Ushers are available and happy to assist you with whatever you may need. Please ask the men near the back of the room or at the entrance doors. Babies and young ones are welcome and encouraged to worship with us. We are glad to hear their occasional, spontaneous joyful noises. Children s church bags can be found by either entrance to help them focus. If, however, you feel that your child is growing overly disruptive and they need to walk around, you are welcome to use the gathering area or the play area up the ramp by the church entrance. Restrooms are found through the gathering area to your right as you leave the sanctuary. Our Worship Today Theme: The God of your Salvation is the Holy Trinity Today we are blessed to focus on our God and how he reveals himself to us as one God, yet three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is a mystery that the human mind cannot fully grasp, yet it is clearly how Scripture speaks of the God who saves us. We humbly ask that the Lord would guard us from all false teachings in this regard and keep us from worshiping any idol that masquerades as the one, true, Trinue God. 2

T H E DIVINE SERVICE Our service is introduced by music from the piano and a welcome from the presiding minister (also known as the liturgist ). OPENING HYMN INVOCATION L(iturgist): C(ongregation): #177 Come Holy Ghost, Creator Blest In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. C O N F E S S I O N A N D A B S O L U T I O N L: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY - Kyrie Invocation The invocation affirms that our worship begins in the name of and directed toward the one, true, Triune God of the Bible. Kyrie Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression, Lord, have mercy is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian church. 3

L: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Absolution In the absolution, we receive God s promise from 1 John 1:9, If we confess our sins he is faithful and just, and will purify us from all unrighteousness. P R A Y E R A N D P R A I S E GLORY TO GOD Gloria in Excelsis Luke 2:14 Gloria in Excelsis This song with roots in the 4 th century proclaims the great things God has done to rescue us from sin, death, and the devil. 4

Prayer of the Day Drawing from the themes in today s Gospel reading, the Prayer of the Day asks God for mercy, blessing, and aid in living a Christian life. PRAYER OF THE DAY L: Let us pray. Almighty God and Father, dwelling in majesty and mystery, filling and renewing all creation by your eternal Spirit, and manifesting your saving grace through our Lord Jesus Christ: in mercy cleanse our hearts and lips that, free from doubt and fear, we may ever worship you, one true immortal God, with your Son and the Holy Spirit, living and reigning, now and forever. C: Amen. Scripture Readings All three readings are thematically tied to the Gospel of the Day. We standing for the Gospel in order to honor our Lord. FIRST LESSON Numbers 6:22-27 Our Scripture readings for the day can be found on the insert. CHILDREN S SERMON The children are invited to come forward for a message directed especially toward them. 6

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm #8 The liturgist and the congregation speak the psalm responsively. You will find the psalm on the bulletin insert. SECOND LESSON Romans 5:1-5 Our Scripture readings for the day can be found on the insert. VERSE OF THE DAY Isaiah 6:3 L: Alleluia! Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory. C: Alleluia! GOSPEL OF THE DAY John 16:12-15 Please stand. After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: Our Scripture readings for the day can be found on the insert. L: This is the Gospel of our Lord. 7

Athanasian Creed Traditionally confessed on Holy Trinity Sunday, this creed strongly confesses and defends one God in three persons and three persons in one God without mixing the persons or dividing the divine being. This creed was not written by St. Athanasius but is named after him because of his strong stance against the anti- Trinitarian heresy of his time, Arianism. CONFESSION OF FAITH Athanasian Creed Whoever wishes to be saved must, above all else, hold to the true Christian faith. Whoever does not keep this faith pure in all points will certainly perish forever. Now this is the true Christian faith: We worship one God in three persons and three persons in one God, without mixing the persons or dividing the divine being. For each person -- the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit -- is distinct, but the deity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, equal in glory and coeternal in majesty. What the Father is, so is the Son, and so is the Holy Spirit. The Father is uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated; the Father is infinite, the Son infinite, the Holy Spirit infinite; the Father is eternal, the Son eternal, the Holy Spirit eternal; yet they are not three who are eternal, but there is one who is eternal, just as they are not three who are uncreated, nor three who are infinite, but there is one who is uncreated and one who is infinite. In the same way the Father is almighty, the Son is almighty, and the Holy Spirit is almighty; yet they are not three who are almighty, but there is one who is almighty. 8

So the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God; yet they are not three Gods, but one God. So the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Spirit is Lord; yet they are not three Lords, but one Lord. For just as Christian truth compels us to confess each person individually to be God and Lord, so the true Christian faith forbids us to speak of three Gods or three Lords. The Father is neither made nor created nor begotten of anyone. The Son is neither made nor created, but is begotten of the Father alone. The Holy Spirit is neither made nor created nor begotten, but proceeds from the Father and the Son. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits. And within this Trinity none comes before or after; none is greater or inferior, but all three persons are coequal and coeternal, so that in every way, as stated before, all three persons are to be worshiped as one God and one God worshiped as three persons. Whoever wishes to be saved must have this conviction of the Trinity. It is furthermore necessary for eternal salvation truly to believe that our Lord Jesus Christ also took on human flesh. Now this is the true Christian faith: We believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, God's Son, is both God and man. He is God, eternally begotten from the nature of the Father, and he is man, born in time from the nature of his mother, fully God, fully man, with rational soul and human flesh, equal to the Father as to his deity, less than the Father as to his humanity; and though he is both God and Man, Christ is not two persons but one, one, not by changing the deity into flesh, but by taking the humanity into God; one, indeed, not by mixture of the natures, but by unity in one person; 9

for just as the rational soul and flesh are one human being, so God and man are one Christ. He suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose the third day from the dead. Hymn of the Day The Hymn of the Day is chosen for its rich content and its connection to the Gospel of the Day. He ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty, and from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. At his coming all people will rise with their own bodies to answer for their personal deeds. Those who have done good will enter eternal life, but those who have done evil will go into eternal fire. This is the true Christian faith. Whoever does not faithfully and firmly believe this cannot be saved. Please be seated. HYMN OF THE DAY #584 O Blessed, Holy Trinity 10

SERMON Numbers 6:22-27 His Name on You OFFERING The members of Abiding Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and throughout the world. During the offering, please take a moment to fill in the Friendship Register that is being handed down your aisle. After everyone has signed it, you may place it on the floor beneath the chair at the end of the row. Public Prayer God invites our prayers and desires that Christians pray for many people and circumstances (1 Timothy 2:1-4). The Lord s Prayer was taught by our Savior Jesus himself, and succinctly prays for God s blessing and help in every aspect of life. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH As the prayer is spoken, each time the minister says, Lord, in your mercy the congregation is invited to respond, Hear our prayer. 11

THE LORD S PRAYER spoken by the congregation Aaronic Blessing The blessing of Aaron has been spoken over God s people for over 3,500 years. The Lord said, So they will put my name on [them], and I will less them (Numbers 6:27). Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. CLOSING PRAYER L: Almighty God, grant to your Church the Holy Spirit and the wisdom that comes from above. Let nothing hinder your Word from being freely proclaimed to the joy and edifying of Christ s holy people, so that we may serve you in steadfast faith and confess your name as long as we live, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. THE LORD S BLESSING L: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. C: Amen. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. 12

CLOSING HYMN #332 Go, My Children, with My Blessing 13

WELCOME AND THANK YOU FOR WORSHIPING WITH US It is wonderful to have all of you here with us today to worship our amazing God. Please stick around after worship to meet and get to know better your brothers and sisters in Christ. Prayer after worship O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I thank you that you have revealed yourself to me, and particularly that you have revealed my need for a Savior, and how you, O Jesus, won my salvation by your dying for me on the cross. Although my mind cannot logically understand how you are three in one, I believe your Word and trust in you because you have saved me. Thank you! Amen. If the Spirit has worked through His Word today and moved you to want to find out more or to get involved please speak to Pastor Steenbock or any of the members after worship. You can also get a hold of Pastor Steenbock or the other ministry staff at Abiding Grace using the contact information below.
