The Second Sunday after Trinity June 10, 2018 Rev d. Brian P. Westgate Pastor, The English Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer of Oakmont and Verona WELCOME to God s House. We are glad to share this sacred place with you. For everyone s benefit: Enter silently. Before the Service, speak to God. During the Service, let God speak to you. After the Service, speak to one another. May God s Holy Spirit, through Word and Sacrament, bless and inspire you, assuring you of His grace, forgiveness, and heavenly support. SEASON THEME The Church of the Spirit SUNDAY THEME The Great Invitation PRAYER UPON ENTERING GOD S HOUSE GRANT US, we beseech You, Almighty God, a steadfast faith in Jesus Christ, a cheerful hope in Your mercy, and a sincere love to You and to all our fellow men; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen. ALMIGHTY AND EVERLASTING GOD, the Source of all life and joy, Who by the glad sound of the Gospel has called us to have part in Your kingdom and glory, shine into our hearts, we beseech You, by Your Word and Spirit, and draw us with the cords of Your constraining grace, that we may heartily choose that good part which shall not be taken away from us, and give all diligence to make our calling and election sure; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the same Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen. DIVINE SERVICE ORDER OF WORSHIP Divine Service, Setting 3, LSB p. 184 PROCESSIONAL HYMN Today Your Mercy Calls Us #915 INVOCATION, p. 184 (we kneel) CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION 2

INTROIT Psalm 18:18b, 19, 1-2a, 27, 30a, 49 The + LORD was my support. He brought me out into a broad place; He rescued me, Because He delight - ed in me. I love you, O LORD, my Strength. The LORD is my Rock and my Fortress. For You save a humble people, But the haughty eyes You bring down. This God His way is perfect; The Word of the LORD proves true, For this I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations, And sing to Your Name. Glory be to the Father and to the Son And to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the be - ginning, Is now and will be forever. Amen. The LORD was my support. He brought me out into a broad place; He rescued me, Because He delight - ed in me. KYRIE, p. 186 GLORIA IN EXCELSIS, p. 187 SALUTATION & COLLECT OF THE DAY, p. 189 O LORD, Who never fails to help and govern those whom You bring up in Your steadfast fear and love, make us to have a perpetual fear and love of Your holy Name; through Jesus Christ... (we sit) THE LITURGY OF THE WORD OLD TESTAMENT: Proverbs 9:1-10 Faith in Christ is the source of all true wisdom. 9 Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn her seven pillars. 2 She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine; she has also set her table. 3 She has sent out her young women to call from the highest places in the town, 4 Whoever is simple, let him turn in here! To him who lacks sense she says, 5 Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. 6 Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight. 7 Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse, and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury. 8 Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you. 9 Give instruction to a wise man, 3

and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. 10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. GRADUAL Psalm 120:1-2 In my distress I called to the LORD, And He answered me. Deliver me, O LORD, from lying lips, From a de - ceitful tongue. EPISTLE: I John 3:13-18 Thus the Apostle speaks of the Church in the world. 13 Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God s love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. TRIPLE ALLELUIA, p. 190 HOLY GOSPEL: St. Luke 14:16-24 The invitation to the Great Supper. God Himself invites us to the fullness of heavenly graces. But those who were bidden despise in worldly spirit God s call and lose their salvation. Those will sit at the heavenly table who really need the supper and also accept it. 16 At that time Jesus said: A man once gave a great banquet and invited many. 17 And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, Come, for everything is now ready. 18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused. 19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused. 20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. 21 So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame. 22 And the servant said, Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room. 23 And the master said to the servant, Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet. THE OFFERING OFFERING HYMN We Give Thee But Thine Own #781:1-2 THE GENERAL PRAYER THE SACRAMENT OF THE ALTAR Guests, Visitors and Members: Please read our beliefs concerning the Sacrament of the Altar. COMING FORWARD FOR COMMUNION TODAY? Here at Redeemer Lutheran Church, we hold to the biblical and historic understanding of Holy Communion, that this Sacrament is reserved for those who hold a common confession of faith. Those who share with us in this Holy Supper must be members of a congregation of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, or of a congregation in full fellowship with the LCMS, thus bearing public witness that they agree with our teachings in general and the following two teachings in particular: 1) When consecrated, the bread and wine of the Lord s Supper are the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, given to us for the remission of sins. 2) Those who come to Holy Communion in repentance and faith, grateful for God s forgiveness, must also be committed to offering their personal forgiveness to all others. Guests communing with us for the first time should see the Pastor before the service. If you are interested in becoming a communicant member or if you have any questions regarding our beliefs, please see the Pastor. COMMUNION CARDS Each time that we celebrate Holy Communion, we ask that all those who come to receive Communion would please fill out a sacramental registration card and hand it to the usher on your way up to the rail. The words on the communion card are also intended to assist you in your spiritual preparation to receive Christ s Body and Blood worthily.
