The Order for Choral Evensong for The Fourth Sunday of Easter April 17, 2016 at 5:00 pm The choral setting of the Responses was composed for St. John s Episcopal Church, Washington, Connecticut by Mark Scholtz All stand as the Choir and Ministers enter Organ Voluntary Evensong John LaMontaine (1920 2013) Opening Sentences Confession of Sin Officiant Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. Officiant and People, all kneeling Almighty and most merciful Father; we have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare thou those who confess their faults. Restore thou those who are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

The Officiant alone stands and says The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. People Amen. All stand The Invitatory and Psalter All remain standing as the Officiant and Choir sing V. O Lord, open thou our lips. R. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. V. O God, make speed to save us. R. O Lord, make haste to help us. V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. V. Praise ye the Lord. R. The Lord s Name be praised. All remain standing as the following Hymn is sung by all Phos hilaron Hail, gladdening Light, of his pure glory poured, Who is the Immortal Father, Heavenly, Blest, Holiest of holies, Jesus Christ our Lord. Now we are come to the Sun s hour of rest. The lights of evening round us shine, We hymn the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Divine. Worthiest art thou, at all times to be sung With undefiled tongue; Son of God, Giver of Life, Alone; Therefore in all the world Thy glories, Lord, they own. Words: Greek, 3rd Century Music: Geoffrey Shaw (1879 1943) 2

All are then seated as the Choir sings the Psalms appointed for the day The Psalmody Psalm 103 Anglican Chants: John Barnard, William Havergal Benedic, anima mea Praise the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, praise his holy Name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thy sin, and healeth all thine infirmities; Who saveth thy life from destruction, and crowneth thee with mercy and loving-kindness; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things, making thee young and lusty as an eagle. The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all them that are oppressed with wrong. He showed his ways unto Moses, his works unto the children of Israel. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy, long-suffering, and of great goodness. He will not alway be chiding; neither keepeth he his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our wickednesses. For look how high the heaven is in comparison of the earth; so great is his mercy also toward them that fear him. Look how wide also the east is from the west; so far hath he set our sins from us. 3

Yea, like as a father pitieth his own children; even so is the Lord merciful unto them that fear him. For he knoweth whereof we are made; he remembereth that we are but dust. The days of man are but as grass; for he flourisheth as a flower of the field. For as soon as the wind goeth over it, it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the merciful goodness of the Lord endureth for ever and ever upon them that fear him; and his righteousness upon children s children; Even upon such as keep his covenant, and think upon his commandments to do them. The Lord hath prepared his seat in heaven, and his kingdom ruleth over all. O praise the Lord, ye angels of his, ye that excel in strength; ye that fulfil his commandment, and hearken unto the voice of his word. O praise the Lord, all ye his hosts; ye servants of his that do his pleasure. O speak good of the Lord, all ye works of his, in all places of his dominion: praise thou the Lord, O my soul. Then the Gloria Patri is sung Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 4

The Lessons The First Lesson 1 John 2:18-29 Children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come; therefore we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out, that it might be plain that they all are not of us. But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all know. I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and know that no lie is of the truth. Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also. Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is what he has promised us, eternal life. I write this to you about those who would deceive you; but the anointing which you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that any one should teach you; as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie, just as it has taught you, abide in him. And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that every one who does right is born of him. Following the Lesson, all stand for the singing of the Office Hymn Office Hymn 189 Resurrexit All remain standing for the singing of the Magnificat Magnificat in D My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. 5

He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Words: Luke 1:46 55 with Gloria Patri Music: Herbert Sumsion (1899 1995) All are seated following the singing of the Magnificat The Second Lesson Mark 6:30-44 The apostles returned to Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. And he said to them, Come away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a while. For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a lonely place by themselves. Now many saw them going, and knew them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns, and got there ahead of them. As he went ashore he saw a great throng, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, This is a lonely place, and the hour is now late; send them away, to go into the country and villages round about and buy themselves something to eat. But he answered them, You give them something to eat. And they said to him, Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat? And he said to them, How many loaves have you? Go and see. And when they had found out, they said, Five, and two fish. Then he commanded them all to sit down by companies upon the green grass. So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. And taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men. Following the Lesson, all stand for the singing of the Nunc dimittis Nunc dimittis in D Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Words: Luke 2:29 32 with Gloria Patri Music: Herbert Sumsion 6

The Apostles Creed Sung on a monotone by the Officiant and People together, all standing I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Prayers The Officiant and Choir sing the following V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. V. Let us pray. The People kneel R. Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. The following Collects are sung; the Choir sings Amen. The Collect of the Day O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of thy people: Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calleth us each by name, and follow where he doth lead; who, with thee and the Holy Spirit, liveth and reigneth, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. A Collect for Peace O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of all enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. 8

A Collect for Aid against Perils L ighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Benedicamus Domino Officiant People The Grace Officiant The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. People Amen. Then the Congregation is seated Greeting During the singing of the Anthem an offering is received Anthems This joyful Eastertide, Away with sin and sorrow! My Love, the Crucified, Hath sprung to life this morrow. Had Christ, that once was slain, ne er burst His three-day prison, Our faith had been in vain: but now hath Christ arisen. 9

My flesh in hope shall rest, And for a season slumber: Till trump from east to west Shall wake the dead in number. Death s flood hath lost his chill, Since Jesus crossed the river: Lover of souls, from ill My passing soul deliver. Words: George R. Woodward (1848 1934) Music: 17th-c. Dutch; arr. Matthew Owens (2015) Bless, O Lord, us thy servants who minister in thy temple; Grant that what we sing with our lips we may believe in our hearts, and what we believe in our hearts we may show forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Words: The Royal School of Church Music Chorister s Prayer Music: Martin How (b. 1931) Closing Prayers All kneel V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. The Officiant may then offer prayers for mission and for the world The Blessing Then all stand for the singing of the final Hymn Hymn 212 Richmond At the conclusion of the Hymn the Choir and Ministers depart; the Congregation remains standing as the procession retires All are cordially invited to a reception in the Great Hall following the Office 10
