January 17, 2016 First Presbyterian Church The Second Sunday after Epiphany Glorify. Grow. Mission Statement: We, as the Church, are the Body of Christ equipped through prayer by the Holy Spirit to glorify God; through passionate worship, nurturing fellowship, sacrificial service, respectful evangelism, and active discipleship, we encourage and challenge all ages of our congregation and community to grow in relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Ask an usher for a large print bulletin, Bible, or hearing enhancement device. Prayer cards, visitor information cards, and offering envelopes can be found in the pews. Please place them in the offering plate. Preaching: Rev. Rich McDermott Liturgist: Rev. Fred Babb Organist: Amy Stewart

The Worship of God 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. Words in bold are spoken by the congregation. Invites all who are able to stand. The flowers are given to the glory of God. Welcome Gathering Voluntary Nun Bitten Wir Dietrich Buxtehude Meditation What is the significance of Jesus using mustard seed and yeast as pictures of the operation of the Kingdom of God? Two items that are initially small and insignificant, yet they have a large effect beyond what one would imagine or expect. Call to Worship People, come from east and west, from north and south, and partake in the Kingdom of God. Indeed, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last. Let us worship God. Introit (11:00) Worship Him as One O. C. Beck Hymn 1 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! Nicea Prayer of Confession Eternal God, our judge and redeemer, we confess that we have tried to hide from you, for we have done wrong. We have lived for ourselves and apart from you. We have turned from our neighbors and refused to bear the burdens of others. We have ignored the pain of the world and passed by the hungry, the poor, and the oppressed. In your great mercy forgive our sins and free us from selfishness, that we may choose your will and obey your commandments; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Assurance of Pardon Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel! In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! The Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. Passing the Peace Greet those around you with, The peace of Christ be with you. Hymn 39 Great is Thy Faithfulness Faithfulness The Sacrament of Baptism The baptism of Riley Wyatt Tremont, son of Joshua and Hillary Tremont Holy God, remind us of the promises given in our own baptism, and renew our trust in you. Make us strong to obey your will and to serve you with joy, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Community Joys and Events 2

Proclaiming Scripture Reading Mark 1:14 15 New Testament page 34 Children s Time (11:00) Children age 3 to Kindergarten are invited to go to Kids For Christ (KFC) in room 216. Anthem (11:00) My Eternal King Jane Marshall My God, I love Thee; not because I hope for heaven thereby, Nor yet because who love Thee not may die eternally. Thou, O my Jesus, Thou didst me upon the cross embrace; For me didst bear the nails and spear, and manifold disgrace. Then why, O blessed Jesus Christ should I not love Thee well? Not for the hope of winning heaven, nor of escaping hell. Not with the hope of gaining aught, nor seeking a reward But as Thyself hast loved me, O everlasting Lord! Even so I love Thee, and will love, and in Thy praise will sing, Solely because Thou art my God, and my eternal king. McDermott Responding Affirmation of Faith from Romans 8 We believe there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose. We are sure that neither death, nor life, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. Offertory Come Thou Fount John Wyeth The Doxology (Hymn 606) Old Hundredth Pastoral Prayer and The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Comments for Contemplation What Is the Kingdom of God Like? Mark 1:14 15, Luke 13:18 21 1. The story of the Christian Church in China reminds us that small and seemingly insignificant beginnings can lead to undreamed of. 2. The kingdom of God (or as it is called in Matthew s gospel, the kingdom of the heavens ), is mentioned nearly 150 times in the New Testament, primarily in statements by himself. 3. So the kingdom of God is something like the rule of God. And it is not only near or at hand, it is now accessible to everyone. And I especially like that last line. Review your plans for living and base your life on this remarkable new. 4. Willard writes, Now God s own kingdom, or rule, is the range of his effective will, where what he wants done is done. The person of God himself and the action of his will are the organizing principles of his kingdom, but everything that obeys those principles, whether by nature or by, is within his kingdom. 5. Slowly, but surely, God s rule and reign extend into new lives, and open hearts. God s kingdom extends everywhere, including your office, your school, your home, and your. 6. First, the life and power of God s kingdom have already been... Second, we must be with the work of God... And third, it is clear from these parables that God wants to the world.
