Sa m ple file What does the Bible say about ghosts and hauntings? Is there such a thing as ghosts? The answer to this question depends on what precisely is meant by the term ghosts. If the term means spirit beings, the answer is a qualified yes. If the term means spirits of people who have died, the answer is no. The Bible makes it very clear that there are spirit beings, both good and evil. But the Bible opposes the idea that the spirits of deceased human beings can remain on earth and haunt the living. In Hebrews 9:27 it says, And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment. That is what happens to a person s soul-spirit after death judgment. And when we are judged, the decision for us is heaven if we believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Look at 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

However, if a person chooses to become an unbeliever (and continues being an unbeliever), then their destination would be hell. Read the below verses. file Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. Sa m ple Matthew 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. Luke 16:22-24 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

There is no in-between. There is no possibility of remaining on earth in spirit form as a ghost. If there are such things as ghosts, according to the Bible, they absolutely cannot be the disembodied spirits of deceased human beings. Sa m ple file But what about the ghost of the prophet Samuel in 1 Samuel 28:7-25? Let's take a look at what the scripture says. 1 Samuel 28:3-6 Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar

Sa m ple file spirits*, and the wizards, out of the land. And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched in Gilboa. And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled. And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim**, nor by prophets. (*What does it mean by a familiar spirit? Familiar spirit means necromancer, one who calls up the dead.) (** The word urim means lights". The urim were stones kept in a pouch on the high-priest's breastplate, used in determining God's decision in certain questions and issues.) According to the above scriptures, Saul was afraid because the Philistines were coming against Israel. Saul had inquired of the Lord but the Lord did not answer him it says by dreams, urim or prophets. Because of this Saul went to find a woman with a familiar spirit. (Someone who would bring up the dead.)

Sa m ple file 1 Samuel 28:7 Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor. (Endor was a city of the tribe of Manasseh, located about 9 miles southeast of the Sea of Galilee.)

According to the Law of Moses, anyone who professed have a familiar spirit, a channel of communication to the spirit world was to be put to death by stoning. The Israelites were told to not have anything to do with familiar spirits. ple file Leviticus 20:27 A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them. Sa m Leviticus 19:31 Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God. Deuteronomy 18:10-11 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

Sa m ple file Why didn't God answer Saul? To find out why God did not answer Saul and rejected him we have to go to 1 Samuel chapter 15. In 1 Samuel 15:1-3 Samuel had been given instructions from the Lord to tell Saul to kill ALL of Amalek (the Amalekites) because Samuel says in 1 Samuel 15:2 that Amalek laid wait for him (Israel) in the way, when he came up from Egypt. In other words the Amalekites were the first to attack the Israelites as they left Egypt in Exodus chapter 17. God promised to bring judgment against the Amaelkites. God also mentions this again in Deuteronomy 25:17-19. Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth out of Egypt; How he met thee by the way, and smote the

Sa m ple file hindmost of thee, even all that were feeble behind thee, when thou wast faint and weary; and he feared not God. Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget it. Now the problem came when Saul carried out this order from Samuel. In 1 Samuel 15:3 Saul was told to kill ALL of the Amalekites as well as the animals. 1 Samuel 15:3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and donkey. In 1 Samuel 15:7-9 Saul attacked the Amalekites which was good and Saul was obeying the Lord, BUT Saul did not completely obey. First, Saul took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. God commanded Saul to bring His judgment on ALL the people, including the king.

file God had clearly commanded in 1 Samuel 15:3, that every ox and sheep, camel and donkey was to be destroyed also, it says Saul did not do this in 1 Samuel 15:9. But Saul and the people spared Agag (the king), and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly. Sa m ple In a normal war in the ancient world, armies were freely permitted to plunder their conquered enemies. This is how the army was often paid. Why was it wrong here? It was wrong for anyone in Israel to benefit from the war against the Amalekites, because it was an appointed judgment from God. According to what you have learned so far, did Saul obey God? Yes No

Sa m ple file Then in 1 Samuel 15:10-11 God tells Samuel the following: Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying, It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night. In chapter 15 verses 12 through 21 Samuel confronts Saul about what he has done. And in verses 22-23 he says the following to Saul 1 Samuel 15:22-23: And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king. 1 Samuel 15:26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the

LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel. Sa m ple file Did you know because of Saul's disobedience to God. David had to deal with the Amalekites (1 Samuel 27:8, 30:1, 2 Samuel 8:10-12). In the book of Esther, Haman, the man who tried to wipe out all the Jewish people in the days of Esther, was a descendant of Agag! (Esther 3:1). When Saul was killed on the field of battle, the final thrust of the sword was from the hand of an Amalekite! (2 Samuel 1:8-10). Look at 1 Chronicles 10:13-14 it tells us why Saul died: So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it; And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse. If you like go ahead and read the rest of 1 Samuel chapter 15 in your Bible.

Now after all that happened in 1 Samuel chapter 15, Saul turned more against God and went to seek out a woman with a familiar spirit. The very thing God had told his people NOT to do! Even though Saul himself had put away those that had familiar spirits and the wizards from out of the land in 1 Samuel 28:3. Sa m ple file 1 Samuel 28:7 Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor. 1 Samuel 28:8 And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.

The Lord would not speak to Saul because the scriptures say he had rejected the Lord. Saul went to a woman with a familiar spirit who lived in Endor. Saul went at night and disguised himself and tells her to bring up the person he tells her to from the dead. Sa m ple file 1 Samuel 28:9-11 And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die? And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing. After reassurance from Saul she asked Saul the following in 1 Samuel 28:11. Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. Saul told her to bring up Samuel.

1 Samuel 28:12 And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul. When Saul consulted the woman of Endor, was it really the prophet Samuel that appeared? Sa m ple file No. Remember what is says in 1 Samuel 28:6? This verse informs us that "when Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord did not answer him, either by dreams or by Urim or by the prophets" (1 Samuel 28:6) God was refusing to communicate with Saul through any means, including His prophets. Samuel, even if he had been still alive, would have had nothing to tell Saul. From this we can infer that the "Samuel" who communicated with Saul was not a prophet of God speaking from beyond the grave. 1 Samuel 28:13 And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods (spirits) ascending out of the earth.

Did you notice in 1 Samuel 28:13 that Saul is asking the woman what she is looking at? He obviously does not see the spirit or ghost. Did you also notice that the woman doesn't say she saw Samuel? Saul asks her what she saw, and she says she saw gods (spirits) NOT Samuel. Sa m ple file 1 Samuel 28:14 And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself. Did you notice in 1 Samuel 28:14 Saul does not actually see Samuel? He asks what form is he of? And the woman says an old man covered with a mantle. She does not says it is Samuel. Did you also notice the scriptures say Saul PERCEIVED it was Samuel and bowed himself to the ground so it seems that Saul actually did not see Samuel!

Sa m ple file The practice of being a necromancer was the craft or practice of bringing back the deceased so as to gain information from them. For this reason alone, the spirit of Samuel conjured up by the woman of Endor should be viewed with great skepticism. The Bible explicitly teaches against expecting any legitimate contact with the dead, for its participation can only serve the purposes of Satan. The medium of Endor reveals that she saw gods (literally spirits) ascending out of the earth. There is much debate as to whether or not the gods (spirits) out of the earth were evil or good, and as to whether or not the ghost that was brought up by the woman was the real Samuel. The woman described Samuel s appearance to Saul as being an old man covered in a mantle. A mantle was a type of robe, or coat for the upper portion of the body.

file In 1 Samuel 28:15-16 (below in bold) look at how the ghost appearing as Samuel addresses Saul in this manner; why has thou disquieted me, to bring me up?, and, why then dost thou ask of me, seeing the Lord is departed from thee, and is thine enemy? One can almost hear the harsh voice he directs towards Saul. This was never Samuel s reaction and attitude towards Saul while Samuel was alive. Samuel was always respectful of Saul and demonstrated immense love for Saul, even after the Lord had withdrawn his favor from Saul. ple 1 Samuel 15:35 Sa m And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel. 1 Samuel 15:11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.

m ple file It is often assumed that the ghost brought up by the woman of Endor was the real Samuel, allowed by God to emerge on the scene when the woman called him up. Most scholars feel that the fact that the ghost correctly predicted Saul s defeat and his son s deaths verifies that the ghost was from God. But this theory seems to contradict the Lord s own instructions. Sa Leviticus 19:31 Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 20:6 And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.

Was it Samuel? Was it a Demon? The spirit that appeared only impersonated Samuel, a view based on the following: The witch was startled by the sudden appearance of Samuel in place of the familiar spirits with whom she was used to dealing. Saul never personally saw Samuel, he only could take the witch s word that it was him. Such a demon would be well acquainted with the deceased human being and would be able to imitate (impersonate) him, deceiving both the witch and the one desiring communication with him. ple The text calls the spirit Samuel. file God unexpectedly by allowed Samuel to appear. This view is based on the following: Sa m The spirit prophesied accurately as to what would happen the following day, which would be somewhat out of character for a demon in such a circumstance, God s Word is clear. All forms of witchcraft and necromancy (to conjure up the dead) are abominable to God. (Deuteronomy 18:9-12) King Saul did not receive any new information. Samuel, before his death, had already pronounced the death, the destruction, and the rejection of Saul (1 Samuel 15), events of which Satan would have been well aware of and could easily have used in his communication with Saul. The above chart is to just get a quick overview of the two viewpoints of whether the woman at Endor brought up the real Samuel or a demon disguised as Samuel.

Luke Chapter 16:19 31 Go Ahead and read Luke 16:19-31 in your Bible because it tells us something interesting. Did you notice in Luke 16:26 it says: And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Sa m ple file When Abraham and prophets like Samuel and the other Old Testament believers died, their spirits did NOT go to heaven. This was because Jesus had not yet died for their sins. They went to a place called Hades. Hades is NOT the same as hell (the lake of fire or "gehenna ). Rather Hades is a "holding zone" where both the saved and unsaved were sent PRIOR to Christ's atoning death and resurrection. At the time of Luke 16:19-26, Hades was separated into two compartments. Those two compartments were separated by an uncrossable gulf (Luke 16:26). One compartment was a place of torment, occupied by unbelievers. This is where the rich man's spirit was sent. The other compartment was Paradise, a place of comfort referred to as "Abraham's bosom." This

is where the spirits of Lazarus and other believers were sent PRIOR to the resurrection of Lord Jesus. Sa m ple file The scriptures inform us that there is a great gulf fixed between these two sides of Hades (the place and comfort and the place of torment) and the earth that does not allow human passage from one place to the other. The rich man begged Abraham to send Lazarus to forewarn his brothers of the torments of the place he was in, so that they could avoid that place. But Abraham informs the rich man that passage by Lazarus was impossible because of the gulf that was affixed between them. Furthermore, Abraham informs the rich man that people such as his brothers would not even be persuaded of the truth even if someone appeared unto them though they were returned from the dead. So, it seems highly unlikely that the ghost appearing as Samuel was anything other than a demonic trick.

How was the ghost able to correctly predict the defeat of Israel at the hands of the Philistines, in 1 Samuel 28:17-19 and the deaths of Saul and his son s just a day after the conjured visit of the ghost by the woman at Endor? Sa m ple file It should be noted that the Lord had already announced his abandonment of Saul because of his disobedience in chapter 1 Samuel 15:28. The forces of hell were aware of the judgment of the Lord upon Saul, and when God abandoned Saul, he was left completely open and vulnerable to the devices of Satan. Moreover, the Lord through Samuel flatly informed Saul that his rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and his stubbornness against the Lord was as iniquity and idolatry. 1 Samuel 15:22-23 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and

ple file stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king. Sa m Angels The Bible teaches there are spirit beings who can connect with and appear in our physical world. The Bible identifies these beings as angels and demons. Angels both in the Hebrew and Greek, means messenger. Angels are God's messengers. In the dictionary angels are described as a spiritual, celestial being, superior to man in power and intelligence. A messenger.

Sa m ple file The angel Gabriel appeared to Daniel in Daniel 8:16 and 9:21. He also appeared to Zacharias in Luke 1:19 and to Mary in Luke 1:26. Michael another angel is also mentioned in Jude 1:9 and Revelation 12:7 as well as Daniel chapter 10 and 12. Angels are also mentioned other places throughout Bible. Can you think of any? The Bible also mentions demons. The are also referred to in the Bible as unclean spirits, devil or devils and fallen angels. Demons are fallen angels, angels who rebelled against God. Demons are evil spirits that are opposed to God and God's people.

Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. file 2 Peter 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment. Sa m ple Luke 10:18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Demons are evil, deceptive, and destructive. According to 2 Corinthians 11:14-15, demons masquerade as angels of light and as servants of righteousness. 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Appearing as a ghost and impersonating a deceased human being definitely seem to be within the power and abilities that demons possess. Jesus cast out many demons from people throughout the New Testament. file The closest biblical example of a haunting is found in Mark 5:1-20. A legion of demons possessed a man and used the man to haunt a graveyard. Sa m ple Mark 5:1-20 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.

Sa m ple file And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion*: for we are many. And he besought him much that he would not

Sa m ple file send them away out of the country. Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea. And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done. And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also

file concerning the swine. And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts. And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him. Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel. Sa m ple (*a legion was a body of soldiers whose number differed at different times, and in the time of Augustus seems to have consisted of 6,826 men (for example 6,100 foot soldiers, and 726 horsemen) When reading Mark 5:1-20 you can see there were no ghosts involved. It was a case of a normal person being controlled by demons to terrorize the people of that area. They will do anything within their power to deceive people, to lead people away from God. This is very likely the explanation of ghostly activity today. Whether it is

called a ghost, a ghoul, or a poltergeist, if there is genuine evil spiritual activity occurring, it is the work of demons. Sa m ple file What about instances in which ghosts act in positive ways? What about psychics who claim to summon the deceased and gain true and useful information from them? Again, it is crucial to remember that the goal of demons is to deceive. If the result is that people trust in a psychic instead of God, a demon will be more than willing to reveal true information. Even true information, if from a source with evil motives, can be used to mislead, corrupt, and destroy. The demon used the truth, while posing as a man of God, to paint a picture of hopelessness. (1 Samuel 28:20) And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.
