Lasallians and Lasallian institutions around the world planned events, community prayers, and reflections to observe this time. In celebration of the theme, Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called children of God, a labyrinth was set up throughout the month in different places on campus to give the St. Mary s community an opportunity to reflect on peace in their lives and in the world. Individual students, staff and faculty, as well as groups of students and visitors, all took part in this activity, soaking up the sun in the day and enjoying the soft glow of candles at night. Professor Brenda Hillman, who brought her poetry class to walk the labyrinth, said, The Labyrinth allowed my students to walk and meditate, bringing the values and processes of poetic thought and inward reflection to the autumn day outside the classroom. We walked in a group for 15 minutes, then went back inside and wrote notes about the process and images that came up. They especially enjoyed reading the prayers for peace in various traditions. Now they will craft their notes into poems and read them aloud. This is a beautiful way to bring the inner and the outer geographies into alignment. - J.T. Taylor, 17 & Lisa Castro, 18 Visit us online at www.stmarys-ca.edu/mmc

Salinas Immersion During Mid-Term break, 24 dedicated SMC students travelled to Salinas, CA to work alongside farm workers studying the injustices around our food system. Exploring the entire process, from field to factory to store and table, students picked strawberry s with workers, toured Taylor Farms, met Mr. Martinelli himself, worked with a local union, and visited the homes and families of the hands that feed America and the world. Public Safety. It was a chance for students to engage in the idea of the humanity that we all share which so often gets forgotten. Krystian Schwarz, a junior at SMC, reflected, It s not just people picking lettuce; It s their lives. The impact college students have through their consumer habits was a big take away from the immersion trip. - Emily Redfern, 17 Wanted to go to Salinas but couldn't make it? Don't worry - Come on our Jan Term break trip to Browning, Montana! We'll explore the education system and the United States policies toward the Native American population while engaging in both the physical and spiritual side of what it means to be human. Applications are due November 23, so sign up today!

A l l S o u l s D a y Our College community gathered for a special mass to honor of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls) this week. Cards for intentions will remain available throughout November, to pray for all our beloved deceased. The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God... (Wis 3:1) N O T I C E A.S.K. will be taking a break for the month of November, but fear not! We ll be meeting again on December 8th! Hope to see you there! The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) has been meeting since Oct. 4th. We currently have 13 students as candidates for the Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Eucharist, and Confirmation. Sessions are on Sundays 6pm-7:30pm, and they have been filled with the Spirit, as students are engaged, asking good questions, and sincere about deepening their relationship with God. If anyone is interested in learning more or want to help support RCIA, please contact Fr. Hai Ho, OFMCap, hmh3@stmarys-ca.edu. Office ext: 4672. Catholic Underground Catholic Underground is an event for Catholic young adults ages 18-35 in the Bay Area. The next event is Saturday, November 7th at 7:30 pm at Saint Mary Magdalen Parish, 2005 Berryman St., Berkeley. All are welcome to join in Eucharistic Adoration on the first Sunday of each month after 8 pm mass from 9-9:45 pm in the Chapel. Confession will be available. Catholic Underground is a two part event which consists of Eucharistic Adoration followed by a social and concert which showcases different Catholic artists. For more information or if you are interested in going in a group, contact Alicia McCallister at akm7@stmarys-ca.edu.

Open Mic for Justice For October s Peace Out, the Mission and Ministry Center decided to focus on social justice as a whole, rather than on a specific issue. Everyone feels personally connected to different social justice issues, so this Peace Out was an opportunity for people to bring awareness to issues they felt were significant to them personally. So, we put on an Open Mic Night for Justice. People performed songs, spoken word, and even raps about social justice issues that are extremely prevalent in today s society. - Sarah Romov, 18 Spread the Interfaith movement across campus! BE PART OF THE I N T E R F A I T H C O U N C I L The Interfaith Council is a student-run committee that will focus on spreading the Interfaith movement across campus. The main responsibilities of the council will be student outreach, as well as programming and events. For more information, contact Sarah Romov at ser8@stmarys-ca.edu

On November 1st, members of the SMC community created and decorated an alter commemorating the dead. Feel free to visit the alter, and - if you wish - bring pictures of your lost loved ones. Any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Vince Nims at vfn1@stmarys-ca.edu or at ext 4814 OR Contact Flora Cabello at fkc1@stmarys-ca.edu Martin Chavez, 14, will be visiting campus November 7-11. He will be available to anyone who would like to speak with him about the Lasallian Volunteer program, and about his experience as an LV at the San Miguel School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. If you would like to make an appointment with Martin, or to request his presence in your class to speak about the LV program, please contact Pamela Thomas at pthomas@stmarys-ca.edu Applications for the 2016-2017 service year are now available.
