The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 10, 2012 Sacred Heart, Manchester St. John the Baptist, Essex. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, Corpus Christi. This Feast stresses our faith in the real presence of the Risen Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. The celebration of the Eucharist is the central act of our faith. It is in celebrating the Eucharist that we come together as Church and are strengthened to bring the Bread of Life to a hungry world. We gather to carry out the command that Christ gave to his disciples, Do this in remembrance of me. Receiving the Eucharist is not a private act between God and me. By being nourished at the Lord s Table we are committing ourselves to sharing with the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation with others. We do this by the becoming, in the words of St. Paul, what we eat and drink. That having received Christ we become Christ to others. We become the life giving bread by our kindness and mercy. We become the nourishment by our care and concern to others. At times, our habits can cause us forget the proper way to receive the Eucharist. When the Minster holds up the Host and says: The Body of Christ and we respond Amen, we are declaring our belief that this is the Body of Christ. We hold up our hands, one over the other, or extend our tongue to receive the Lord. After the host is placed in our hands we step to the side, pick up the host with our fingers and place it in our mouth. We should never lick it up from our hands. Then when we approach the Eucharistic Minister who has the cup, we will hear the Blood of Christ and will respond Amen. The Cup will be passed to us; we will then drink of the Blood of Christ and return the Cup to the Minister who will wipe the rim of the Cup for the next communicant. Due to the danger of the Precious Blood dripping to the floor, or fingers going into the cup, the Host should never be dipped (Intinction) by the communicant. It is important as parents and teachers, that we convey to children that what they are receiving is the Body of Christ. It should never be removed from their mouths. If for some reason, it has to be removed from the mouth, it should be wrapped in a tissue and then see the priest after Mass for proper care. Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament is celebrated every Monday Morning from 8:30 to 9:30 in the Chapel of Sacred Heart Church. It is a blessed opportunity to spend some time before the Blessed Sacrament in prayer. The Chapel is also opened each weekday until 3:00 PM for private prayer. Peace, Fr. Jack Faith Book Reflection on Today s Readings From today's Gospel reading: "...Jesus took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to them and said, "Take it; this is my body.' Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it." Reflection: Receiving the Body and Blood of the Lord gives us a share in his life, death and resurrection so that we too can willingly give our lives in service and love for others the way he did. When we take the cup and drink from it today we are saying our "Yes" to Jesus' way of life and we are receiving his life so that we can live the "Yes" we are professing. So we ask ourselves: Do we just see certain parts of our lives as dedicated to service in the Lord's name? Shall we ask the Spirit to help us offer all of our lives in service to the Lord? Congratulations Graduates The prayers and congratulations of Sacred Heart Parish and St. John the Baptist Parish are extended to all who graduate this year. May the Lord continue to bless you as you continue your education or begin your job search and new jobs. The Catholic Appeal On the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, we recall and celebrate the great moment in history when Christ laid down his life and gave His Body and Blood as food for us so that we might know eternal life. When we give to the Catholic Appeal, we help the Church do this through the 50 ministries of the Archdiocese of Boston. If you would like to join with other parishioners in our support of our Church, please complete a pledge form available in the back of the church or visit www.bostoncatholicappeal.org. 4

As we celebrate Mass, we join in honoring our loved ones who have gone before us and we pause to consider the gifts they have left us in our beautiful church and facilities. Let us truly honor their memory and join in preserving their legacy. Even with the significant funds we have raised so far, we still have a long way to go. We still need to hear from many members of Sacred Heart Parish. This is a Parish-wide effort, everyone is being asked to participate over the three year pledge period.
