Dear Friends, Previously I've shared information with you about the commitment of our local Church to assist survivors of sexual abuse and to prevent such abuse from taking place. I've also shared information about House Bill 1947 and its potential to devastate our parishes, schools, and charitable ministries. Many of you contacted your elected officials to voice your concerns about this matter in a respectful way and I'm very thankful to you for doing that. Today, I'm sharing an update on the status of this legislation. House Bill 1947 was the subject of a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in Harrisburg last month. Following the committee's determination that the retroactive provision was unconstitutional, an amended version of the bill was considered by the full senate. The amendment stripped the retroactive provisions pertaining to the civil statute of limitations covering sexual abuse. The senate voted unanimously in favor of the amended version of the bill. The amended bill must now be reconsidered by the members of the House of Representatives, which we expect will take place in the fall. When additional information becomes available I will give you a clear update. Please join me in praying for all of our elected officials who work hard to serve our communities each day. Again, thank you and May God bless you all. Sincerely yours in Jesus Christ, Monsignor George A. Prayer for our Parish Partnership Heavenly Father, Your wisdom and providence are beyond our understanding; surround us with your love so that we may not be overwhelmed during this time of transition in our parish. Help us to engage one another with charity, openness and good will as we begin our parish partnership; and to be patient with the questions that may arise. We pray for the courage to be open to new possibilities and new ways of living out our parish mission. May the richness, diversity and gifts of our people be treasured and used to strengthen the Body of Christ In our neighborhood, and witness to your presence in our lives. Let us view this moment of change and renewal, not as a threat to what has been, but as an invitation to build on the faith and traditions that are important to our parish, through a vibrant, parish partnership united in mission and dedicated ever more to the fruitful building up of your Kingdom We ask this through Christ our Lord Amen Stay informed, educated and inspired by visiting CatholicPhilly.com every day. Gospel Summary This Gospel reminds us of three things. First of all the disciples asked Jesus how to pray and he gave them a model we call the Our Father. Jesus gave the disciples a form of prayer that praises and petitions God. Next there was the example of a friend who came in the middle of the night to another s house asking for bread. The visitor awoke his friend with a plea for bread, but the sleeping friend did not want to be disturbed. Perhaps it would not be their friendship that got the first man his loaf of bread, but his persistence. So, the only way to continue his night s sleep was for the second man to give his friend the bread. In this parable, Jesus made clear that we need to be persistent in prayer. Finally, Jesus asked what father would hand his son a snake when asked for a fish, or a scorpion when asked for an egg. The point of this illustration was to show the disciples that God would give us the most important gift, the Holy Spirit. Holy Year of Mercy Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church. With renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. Please call the rectory at 610-623-0409 or send an email to sacredheartchurch@rcn.com and we will be glad to mail you a registration form. The rectory hours are weekdays 8:30AM to 4:00PM.
