June 22, 2014 YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER Last Saturday morning at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre, Bishop Murphy ordained Father Joseph Scolaro and three of his classmates. It was a ceremony filled with beauty, awe and pageantry. There are two essential moments in the rite of ordination: the imposition of the bishop s hands and the ordination prayer. When that prayer is completed, the deacon has become a priest for all eternity. Immediately after the priesthood has been conferred, the new priest is vested and his hands are consecrated with chrism and he is given the chalice and paten with the host by the bishop. The Mass of Ordination is actually the new priest s First Mass which he concelebrates with the ordaining bishop and the other bishops and priests who are present. Aside from the consecration of a bishop and the installation of a new pope, there is no more impressive ritual in the Catholic Church. Every priest is an alter Christus, another Christ. He takes the place of Jesus Christ and speaks in his name. He alone can change bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ and forgive sins. He alone goes to the altar and renews the Sacrifice of Christ. He has been chosen by God and not by mere human beings. He has been chosen and appointed for the things of God and he is to represent and mediate for the people of God. The priest, therefore, must be a man of sacrifice. He is called upon by God and the Church to sacrifice himself totally to the work of Jesus. His vocation is to make Christ present sacramentally and to make the sacraments of the Christ as available as possible. He is the servant of the Gospel and the proclaimer of divine truth. The priest cannot be overly worried about trendy opinions or the new found notions of a society that has forgotten about God. Sometimes merely preaching Catholic morality and doctrine will be considered offensive. This has been true since the very beginning of the Catholic Church. There have always been innumerable objections to Catholic teaching and there always will be. That is because Catholic teaching has its origin in Sacred Scripture and Tradition and is not subject to opinion polls or current thought. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. (Heb. 13:8) This week Father Scolaro goes to St. Joseph s in Garden City. There he will celebrate Holy Mass, give the sacraments, and proclaim the Gospel. (You will all recall how well he did that here.) He will be a father to the people and

bring them Christ. Every day he will pray the Divine Office for them and the whole Church. He will give them his compassionate heart, listen to their troubles and encourage them. In him they will find the most loving of fathers and the most compassionate of shepherds. For the past year Father Scolaro has been such a blessing to our parish as a deacon. Now as a priest he shares in the sublime office of Jesus, the Supreme and Eternal Priest. On this Solemnity of Corpus Christi we pray for Father Scolaro and thank God that he responded so generously to the invitation of Christ to be his priest. Next year we will have the joy of celebrating the ordination of Sean Magaldi. May there be many others to follow. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald PETER S PENCE COLLECTION Next week our diocese will take up the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides the Holy Father with the funds he needs to carry out his most important charitable works. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Through your generosity, we can cast the peace of Christ upon the world. Please be as generous as your means will allow. The scriptures today remind us that We, many though we are, are one body for we all partake of the one loaf. How are we using our gifts of time and talent to build up the body of Christ? STEWARDSHIP 06/16/13 $28,178 06/15/14 $23,913 (-15.14%) AIR CONDITIONING 06/16/13 $ 2,910 06/15/14 $ 4,836 (+66.19) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish! Catholics for Freedom of Religion Educating and Advocating for Freedom of Religion for All A June 22, 2014 America s First Freedom: Religious Liberty At the May 13, 2014 National Catholic Prayer Breakfast, Robert P.George told Catholics, The days of acceptable Christianity are over. The days of comfortable Catholicism are past. He warned that a price is demanded of all committed believers, as mainstream America registers its preference for Catholics who might go to Mass but do not embrace the totality of the Church s teachings or those who know the Church s teaching but prefer safety in their silence. In other words, a tame Catholic who is ashamed of the Gospel is socially acceptable, said George, even as he called on his audience to take risks and follow Christ s words to take up thy cross and follow me. To believe in the Gospel is to make oneself a marked man or woman, he said. Read more here: http://bit.ly/1jpshpf This culture George describes must be met with the determined and fearless voice of millions of faithful Americans asserting that we will practice our faith and will not be bullied out of our freedom to take our values and priorities into the town, country and world in which we live. Catholics for Freedom of Religion (CFFR) is growing to be a significant part of that voice. CFFR is a grassroots effort to empower the laity to educate and advocate for religious freedom on a non-partisan, ecumenical basis within each parish. In the two years since its founding, CFFR has provided dozens of speakers and events to thousands of Long Island Catholics all guided by our mission statement to educate every generation of Catholics about our Freedom of Religion how rare it is, how dearly it was purchased for us and how quickly it can be lost. To join the work of this lay effort or to request a speaker for your parish ministry, contact us at (631) 896-8331. Visit our website at www.catholicsforfreedomofreligion.org. In speaking about the preservation of America s religious liberty, Pope Benedict XVI said that this work belongs to "an engaged, articulate and well-formed Catholic laity endowed with a strong critical sense vis-à-vis the dominant culture." Fortnight events in the Diocese of Rockville Centre include: Bishop Murphy will celebrate the opening Mass, which marks the beginning of the Fortnight, on June 21st at 5:00 PM at the St. Agnes Cathedral, 29 Quealy Pl, Rockville Centre, NY 11570. Father Philip K. Eichner, President of Kellenberg High School and Chairman of the Board of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights will be the distinguished guest speaker of Catholics for Freedom of Religion on Wednesday, June 25th, 7:00 PM at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, 440 West Neck Road, Huntington, NY 11743 Bishop Murphy, Bishop Zglejszewski, and Thomas Renker, Esq. will speak at the rally, Religious Freedom: Our First Amendment Right, hosted by Msgr. Vlaun, President of Telecare TV, on Saturday, June 28th at 10:00 AM in the auditorium of St. John the Baptist High School, 1170 Montauk Hwy, West Islip, NY 11795. You are invited to join in praying the Rosary in public prayer and witness in front of the school to conclude the rally. LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is the solemnity we celebrate this Sunday. We know it as Corpus Christi, we are called to focus and reverence on the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and in the Church. Today in the Holy Gospel Jesus says I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I give is my flesh for the life of the world. With these words Jesus promises us to live forever with Him, here on this life when we receive the Eucharist and in all eternity to live with Him at the right side of the Father what a wonderful promise! It comes to mind when as a young child I participated in the Eucharistic procession all around my parish neighborhood. The priest carries the Blessed Sacrament under a canopy, singing hymns, the people following the priest as we, the young and children, would be spreading petals from colorful flowers on the ground the monstrance would pass. As the Eucharist approaches the homes, the people would kneel by their doors, singing together with the priest who would stop and bless them! What a wonderful witness of our Faith! During his Sunday Angelus remarks, Pope Francis invited all people to join him for the Mass and the Eucharistic procession to celebrate Corpus Christi this week. Pope Francis linked the upcoming feast with the one celebrated last Sunday, the feast of the Holy Trinity. Every Sunday we go to Mass, we celebrate the Eucharist together and the Eucharist, in which the Trinity humbly dwells and communicates itself: this is why the Church has placed the feast of the Body of the Lord after that of the Trinity. This is a time when Catholics can show their love for Christ in the real presence by honoring Him in a very public way; it is also a way to show our love for our neighbors by expressing our sincere devotion to the Eucharist, and to reach those who only drive by the church in worldly pursuits. Please stop by our kiosks and pick up the new CDs we have. The Body and Blood of Christ by Dr. Scott Hahn. It is the perfect CD to understand the importance of the Eucharist and the real presence, and the significance of the Feast of Corpus Christi. Jesus the Bridegroom: The Greatest Love Story Ever Told by Dr. Brant Pitre. You will learn what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord, Savior and Bridegroom and many more! Equip yourself to answer Christ s call to preach the Gospel to all nations, sharing these CDs with as many people the Lord puts in your way. There are inspiring talks which surely would touch many souls. Toti Conforti
