WHAT DO THE COLUMBIETTES DO? According to Wikipedia, the Columbiettes are women auxiliaries of the Knights of Columbus Councils. In 1939, Monsignor J. Francis McIntyre, Chaplain of the New York Chapter Knights of Columbus, later a cardinal, suggested formation of the group. He had seen great numbers of women coming out of a Communist rally at Madison Square Garden. He conceived the idea of a ladies organization to work with the Knights of Columbus (K of C). The New York Chapter K of C formulated a plan for such an organization. Their plan called for the establishment of Auxiliaries in each Council and to coordinate the efforts of all under the direction of one parent group. On March 2, 1939 the first Columbiettes was instituted in New York City. Since then, other auxiliaries were formed. State Councils and a Supreme Council were established. Spiritual patronesses are the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Thérèse of Lisieux and Saint Joan of Arc. A Columbiette Auxiliary must be sponsored by a Knights of Columbus Council. One of its purposes is to aid that Council spiritually, socially and financially in all its endeavors. The primary requirements to be a member of this organization is to be a Catholic female in good standing with her parish and to be seventeen (17) years of age or older. Secondary purposes include the spiritual, social and charitable welfare of their members. Locally, the Columbiettes in Newton (instituted on June 25, 1993) fall under the Don Bosco Knights of Columbus Council Number 7784 which includes the parishes of Saint Joseph in Newton, Our Lady Queen of Peace in Branchville, Christ the Good Shepherd in Andover and Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Swartswood. The Don Bosco Columbiettes are sponsors of the Squirettes (Circlette of Mary s Angels) which is a Catholic youth group for girls aged 10-17. Some of the activities completed/scheduled along with donations for 2016-2017 are: Backpack Ministry (children in need) Birth Haven Baby Shower Can Tabs (Ronald McDonald House) Chapter Communion Breakfast Christmas Social Department of Persons with Disabilities Donations to local Churches/Charities Duffle Bag Ministry (Bags for Buddies) Farm & Horse Show Food Pantry Support Fundraisers: Applebee's Flapjack Breakfast Beefsteak Dinner Flea Market Murder Mystery Dinner Villa Capri Pizza (Lent) Good Citizen Award Father John s Animal Rescue Supplies Heavens Cents (support for seminarians & postulants) Little Sisters of the Poor Manna House May Crowning Memorial Masses Migrant Worker s Dinner Nursing Home Sing-A-Longs & Donations Respect Life Sunday Participation Retreats Bridgeway Rehabilitation Services Santa s Community Social Scholarships Secret Sister Program Shoebox Ministry (homeless/shelter packs) Social Events Saint Joseph Church s Youth Mission Trip St. Patrick s Day Parade State Convention State Tank Pull (wounded military) Squirettes Testimonial Dinners Traveling Mary Statue Wreath Making & Potluck Dinner at St. Paul s Abbey Website/Social Media Info: http://donboscocolumbiettes.weebly.com/ https://www.facebook.com/pages/don-bosco-columbiettes/435479773196234 www.squirettes-marysangels.weebly.com

Lenten ACTIVITIES STATIONS OF THE CROSS SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION Book club The book club will meet on Tuesday, March 21 st at 7:00pm in the library to discuss Henri Nouwen s The Return of the Prodigal Son Bishop Arthur Serratelli has granted the following dispensation: dispensation I hereby grant a dispensation from the laws of fast and abstinence to all Roman Catholics living in or visiting this diocese on Friday, March 17, 2017. This dispensation is given with the strong recommendation that the faithful honor both Saint Patrick and this holy season of Lent by some special work of charity or exercise of piety in place of abstinence.
