FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 29, 2018 TODAY'S WORSHIP Divine Service III LSB pages 184-202 L = Liturgist * = Stand C = Congregation PRELUDE 10:30 Chimes of Peace Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow TALLIS CANON WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *HYMN OF INVOCATION This Joyful Eastertide LSB 482 1. This joyful Eastertide Away with sin and sorrow! My Love, the Crucified, Has sprung to life this morrow: Had Christ, who once was slain, Not burst His three day prison, Our faith had been in vain: But now has Christ arisen, arisen, arisen; But now has Christ arisen! 2. Death s flood has lost its chill Since Jesus crossed the river; Lover of souls, from ill My passing soul deliver: Had Christ, who once was slain, Not burst His three day prison, Our faith had been in vain: But now has Christ arisen, arisen, arisen; But now has Christ arisen! 3. My flesh in hope shall rest And for a season slumber Till trump from east to west Shall wake the dead in number: Had Christ, who once was slain, Not burst His three day prison, Our faith had been in vain: But now has Christ arisen, arisen, arisen; But now has Christ arisen! 8:00 Choristers, Ringers & Singers with Fathers Go Into the World Natalie Sleeth *INVOCATION AND GENERAL CONFESSION L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. L: We wait in hope for the Lord C: He is our help and our shield. L: From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind. C: From His dwelling place He watches all who live on earth. L: The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him. C: On those whose hope is in His unfailing love. L: We confess together: C: Lord, I confess to You that my behavior has not always been what You require. The evil that I ought not do, I have done, and the good I should do, has often gone undone. I have not consistently demonstrated my love for You and those around me. In Your mercy do not judge me according to my sins, but forgive me for the sake of the person, death, and resurrection of Jesus, my Lord and King. *THE ABSOLUTION *THE GLORIA PATRI Taken from LSB, page 186 C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. *THE KYRIE C: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

*THE COLLECT OF THE DAY L: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. L: Let us pray. THE FIRST READING for the fifth Sunday of Easter is from Acts 8:30-40, page 917: (5, 8, 10:30) 30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, Do you understand what you are reading? 31 And he said, How can I, unless someone guides me? And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this: Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter and like lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth. 33 In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth. 34 And the eunuch said to Philip, About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else? 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized? 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he preached the gospel to all the towns until he came to Caesarea. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. THE EPISTLE is from I John 4:1-11, page 1023: 1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. 4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error. 7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. L: This is the Word of the Lord. *ALLELUIA AND VERSE C: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. *THE HOLY GOSPEL - The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the fifteenth chapter, verses 1-8, pages 901-902: C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

*THE CREED (Luther s Explanation of the 2 nd Article) I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true. Amen. SERMON HYMN Where Charity and Love Prevail LSB 845 1. Where charity and love prevail There God is ever found; Brought here together by Christ s love By love are we thus bound. 2. With grateful joy and holy fear His charity we learn; Let us with heart and mind and soul Now love Him in return. 3. Forgive we now each other s faults As we our faults confess, And let us love each other well In Christian holiness. 4. Let strife among us be unknown; Let all contention cease; Be God s the glory that we seek; Be ours His holy peace. 5. Let us recall that in our midst Dwells Christ, His only Son; As members of His body joined We are in Him made one. THE SERMON Living Vine, Living Branches (John 15:1-8) THE OFFERING - During the offering all worshipers are asked to fill out the blue or ivory cards found in the pew rack. Please pass cards down to center aisle. They will be collected immediately after the offering. VOLUNTARY 8:00 Ringers from Green Park Lutheran School Go My Children, with My Blessing Arr: John A.
