PART 1: FOUNDATIONS FOR HEALING D. FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE HEALING

1. OUR MOTIVATION: LOVE AND COMPASSION 1 Cor. 13:1-3: If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Matt 9:35-36: Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

1. OUR MOTIVATION: LOVE AND COMPASSION Matthew 14:14: When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. Matt 20:31-34: but they shouted all the louder, Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us! Jesus stopped and called them. What do you want me to do for you? he asked. Lord, they answered, we want our sight. Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him. Mark 1:41-42: A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, If you are willing, you can make me clean. Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. I am willing, he said. Be clean! Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured.

2. THE IMPORTANCE OF FAITH Jesus sometimes credits a person s faith in Him for their healing Matthew 9:22: Jesus turned and saw her. Take heart, daughter, he said, your faith has healed you. And the woman was healed from that moment. Matthew 9:29: Then he touched their eyes and said, According to your faith let it be done to you. Matthew 15:28: Then Jesus said to her, Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted. And her daughter was healed from that very hour. James 5: 14-16: Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well.

2. THE IMPORTANCE OF FAITH Sometimes our lack of faith can inhibit healing Matt 17:19-21: Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, Why couldn t we drive it out? He replied, Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, Move from here to there and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. Mark 6: 4-6: Jesus said to them, Only in their own towns, among their relatives and in their own homes are prophets without honor. He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

2. THE IMPORTANCE OF FAITH Sometimes it was the faith of others that released the healing Mark 2:4-5: Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, Son, your sins are forgiven. Sometimes there is no evidence of any faith and the healing still occurs Luke 7:12-15: As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, Don't cry. Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, Young man, I say to you, get up! The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

3. PERSEVERANCE Matt 15: 22-28 And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon. But he did not answer her a word But she came and knelt before him, saying, Lord, help me. And he answered, It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs. She said, Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table. Then Jesus answered her, O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire. And her daughter was healed instantly.

3. PERSEVERANCE Mark 8:22-25: They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man's eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, Do you see anything? He looked up and said, I see people; they look like trees walking around. Once more Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. Some healings are immediate. Other times we will need to pray, assess, pray some more, assess, and pray some more. Sometimes we will only see a partial healing. At other times the healing has been released during our prayer time and it will continue over the next days or weeks.

PART 1: FOUNDATIONS FOR HEALING E. HEALING POWER AND AUTHORITY

1. THE FATHER: LEADS THE WAY IN HEALING John 5:8;19: Then Jesus said to him, Get up! Pick up your mat and walk. At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked...jesus gave them this answer: I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. John 10:25-26: Jesus answered, I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. John 10:37-39: Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does. But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.

2. JESUS: IN HIS NAME AND AUTHORITY WE PRAY FOR HEALING Luke 9:49: Master, said John, we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us. Luke 10:17: The seventy-two returned with joy and said, Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name. John 14:12-14: I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

2. JESUS: IN HIS NAME AND AUTHORITY WE PRAY FOR HEALING Acts 3:6-7: Then Peter said, Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk. Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. Acts 3:16: By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see.

2. JESUS: IN HIS NAME AND AUTHORITY WE PRAY FOR HEALING Acts 4:29-30: Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus. Acts 9:34-35: Aeneas, Peter said to him, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and take care of your mat. Immediately Aeneas got up. All those who lived in Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord.

3. HOLY SPIRIT: THE SOURCE OF OUR POWER Mark 1:1: The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. Luke 4:18-21: The Spirit of the Lord is on me [Jesus], because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor.

3. HOLY SPIRIT: THE SOURCE OF OUR POWER Matthew 12:28: But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. Acts 10:38: How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. Rom 15:18-19: I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done by the power of signs and miracles, through the power of the Spirit. So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.

4. GOD S PEOPLE: EMPOWERED TO HEAL TODAY We all have the Holy Spirit Gal 3:3-5: After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by human effort? Have you experienced ] so much in vain if it really was in vain? Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by your observing the law, or by your believing what you heard? Rom 8:9-10: You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. Acts 1:8: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

4. GOD S PEOPLE: EMPOWERED TO HEAL TODAY Some have specific giftings from the Holy Spirit 1 Cor 12: 4-7; 9-11: There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines. Some have greater anointing with same gifts 1 Cor 12:4-6: There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.

4. GOD S PEOPLE: EMPOWERED TO HEAL TODAY Our effectiveness in healing grows with our experience and faith Rom 12:3-7: For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. Some have positional authority from the Holy Spirit James 5:14-15: Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up.

PART 1: FOUNDATIONS FOR HEALING F. SOURCES OF ILLNESS AND SICKNESS

1. SATAN John 10:10: The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. Acts 10:38: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. Luke 13:10-12: On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. Spiritual strongholds occult experiences curses false religions addictive behaviors generational sin idolatry unforgiveness hatred greed pride fear.all can open doors to demonic oppression and illness.

2. PERSONAL SIN AND PSYCHOLOGICAL / EMOTIONAL FACTORS James 5: 14-16: Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Ps 38:1-8: O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. For your arrows have pierced me, and your hand has come down upon me. Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; my bones have no soundness because of my sin. My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear. My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly. I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I go about mourning. My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body. I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart.

2. PERSONAL SIN AND PSYCHOLOGICAL / EMOTIONAL FACTORS I Cor 11:27-32: Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.

3. ACCIDENTS 2 Sam 4:4: Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame in both feet. His nurse picked him up and fled, but as she hurried to leave, he fell and became crippled. His name was Mephibosheth.

OTHER FACTORS 4. Genetics John 9:2-3: His disciples asked him, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? Neither this man nor his parents sinned, said Jesus, but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. 5. Biological Agents 1 Tim 5:23: Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

PART 1: FOUNDATIONS FOR HEALING G. MYSTERIES AROUND HEALING

G. MYSTERIES AROUND HEALING Jesus healed ALL who came to him Acts 10:38: How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. Jesus told us we would do greater things than Him John 14:12: I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

G. MYSTERIES AROUND HEALING However, we see evidence in the Scriptures of saints who were sick. 2 Timothy 4:20: Erastus stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus sick in Miletus. Gal 4: 13-15: As you know, it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you. Even though my illness was a trial to you, you did not treat me with contempt or scorn. Instead, you welcomed me I can testify that, if you could have done so, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me. Phil 2:25-27: But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs. For he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill. Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. 1 Tim 5:23: Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

G. MYSTERIES AROUND HEALING We don t understand why everyone does not get healed. But we press in and contend for all men to see the peace of God in their lives in every area: spiritual, emotional, physical, and relational. We believe that is the will of God. According to the Bible, there will eventually be complete healing for everyone who turns to Christ. Either here on earth or in heaven; God is going to eradicate all disease, poverty, hatred and sin. That s the Kingdom!

G. MYSTERIES AROUND HEALING There are scriptural passages that seem to say that God causes sickness. God struck Pharaoh with plagues (Gen 12:17) and plagues of Egypt (Exodus 11:23) God struck Uzziah with leprosy (2 Kings 15:5). Psalmist and Job view God as the ultimate cause of their calamity (Job 13:28, Psalm 39). The Angel of the Lord strikes Herod and he is eaten by worms and dies. The chastening of God is linked with sickness when there is failure to recognize the body of the Lord (1 Cor. 11:27). The plagues in Revelation are described as the wrath of God. In all these cases the root cause is sin, and the sickness is associated God s judgment. However, the chastening of the Lord is never harsh, nor for the purpose of our destruction, but rather flows from the love of God and is for our ultimate redemption. God is the source of only goodness, beauty, and truth, so there are some apparent mysteries as to why or if God may use or allow pain and sickness.

THANK YOU 2018 version compiled by Revival Valley 2014 version of the training was compiled and written by a coalition of interdenominational churches in the Santa Cruz County who desired to see the kingdom of God made manifest in their region. They came together with a common vision and love for one another respecting our differences and distinctives but seeking to maintain the unity of the Spirit purchased for us by Jesus at Calvary. We all believe that Jesus still heals today and that the church should be a healing community.
