Page 7 March 18, 2018 Parish Life, cont. Community News Divine Mercy Sunday, April 8 In the 1930's, Jesus appeared to St. Faustina Kowalska and requested that a feast of Divine Mercy be established in His Church and solemnly celebrated each year on the first Sunday after Easter. In the Jubilee Year 2000, after many years of study and prayerful discernment, Pope Saint John Paul II fulfilled the will of Christ and designated the Second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. (In 2005, Saint John Paul II died on this very feast!) Christ promises that any soul who would go to Confession and then receive Jesus in Holy Communion on this feast would be forgiven all sins and punishment for sin. On Divine Mercy Sunday, the Church officially grants any Catholic who meets the proper conditions a plenary indulgence. A sacramental Confession within twenty days of the feast is valid for obtaining its tremendous graces. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish will celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday in the Church at 12 Noon on April 8. Participants in Gathered By Grace will have lunch at St. Michael Hall before moving to the Church for this celebration. Please refer to the bulletin for opportunities for the sacrament of Reconciliation in the days leading up to the Easter season and this feast. If you are interested in learning more or participating in a weekend, email nicole.ghrcusillo@gmail.com or call 874-5670. Christians in the Holy Land Fundraiser Once the majority in towns like Bethlehem and Nazareth, Holy Land Christians now make up only 2.9% of the population of the Holy Land. These brave people face many challenges, often finding themselves in between two sides of a conflict, unable to raise the funds for permits, food, and housing. Sadly, there is a very real possibility of the holiest of sites in Jerusalem and Bethlehem and Nazareth may one day not have a sustained Christian population. And then, who will care for our sacred sites? Tickets for a fundraiser to benefit Christians in the Holy Land are available at the Manna Table through the month of March for $10 each. Prizes include dinners; hotel packages in places such as Annapolis, MD, Washington, DC, Virginia Beach, and the Outer Banks; tickets to museums and arts; and so much more. This fundraiser is based on the noon time drawing of the Virginia Lottery Pick 3 numbers during the month of April. Whatever Pick 3 number is drawn each weekday will be reflected on a winning raffle ticket, and the holder of that ticket will win the prize reflected on the calendar for that day. Msgr. McCarron will be presenting the funds raised to the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem in April as part of a Holy Land Pilgrimage. Information is available at the Manna table or by calling Maureen Coon at 757-291-5633. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School Join us for Carmel Business Connect, an opportunity for meeting and networking with Catholic business people at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This one hour event, which includes breakfast, and a great speaker series, is a great way to share your business and hear about the businesses and work of other Catholics in our parish. Thank you to LaDonna Finch of VA Health System for sponsoring our breakfast in March. Our next meeting is on Tuesday, May 1, at 7:40 a.m. in St. Michael Hall.
