On the Path to Sainthood: Fr. Solanus Casey O n November 18, 2017, Pope Francis beatified Fr. Solanus Casey, who took the next step toward sainthood in a huge event at Ford Field in Detroit. Humble and faithful disciple of Christ, he was distinguished for his tireless service to the poor, the Holy Father said. May his witness help priests, religious, and laity to live with joy the bond between the proclamation of the Gospel and love of the poor. Born November 25, 1870, Francis Solanus Casey came from an Irish immigrant family of 16 children in Oak Grove, Wisconsin. At the age of 21, after working as a recorder, streetcar operator, and prison guard, he entered St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee, where studies were difficult for him. He left the seminary in 1896, and joined the Capuchin Friars Minor in Detroit, taking the name of Solanus. On July 24, 1904, he was ordained a priest but, because his knowledge of theology was considered weak, Solanus was not allowed to preach or hear confessions. However, during his 14 years as a sexton in Yonkers, New York, he was recognized as an excellent speaker. He served in the parishes of Manhattan and Harlem before returning to Detroit, where he served as a sexton for 20 years at the monastery of St. Bonaventure. Every Wednesday afternoon, he conducted services for the sick. In 1946, weakened and ill, he was transferred to the Capuchin novitiate in Huntington, Indiana, where he lived until 1956 when he was hospitalized in Detroit. He died on July 31, 1957, at the age of 86. Pope John Paul II declared him venerable in 1995. Blessed Solanus Casey, pray for us. Fr. Jose Thomas

6 ST. FRANCIS SCHOOL NEWS Did You Know... St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School is currently enrolling Full Time Pre-Kindergarten, for 4-year-olds and Full Time and Part Time for Preschool for 3-year-olds AND Kindergarten through 8th Grade for the 2018 2019 School Year! Come and Visit on Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the month of April Or Call the School Office: (541) 382-4701 This year our 4th-Grade teacher, Erika Pakalnis, and our principal, Crystal Mooney, were able to attend the NCEA Convention in Cincinnati. Miss Pakalnis and Mrs. Mooney were encouraged and challenged to reflect on what it means to be a Catholic educator, with faith in the students we teach and love. Pope Francis challenges each of us to be missionary disciples and calls us to go forth and bear witness to the Gospel as we educate the students in our care. We were blessed this year to learn from exceptional leaders speaking at the convention including His Eminence Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi, the Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education at the Vatican, and from the Most Reverend Frank J. Caggiano, Bishop of Bridgeport. In addition, there were more than 200 professional development sessions to choose from to personalize each attendee s experience and professional growth. Miss Pakalnis and Mrs. Mooney will be sharing what they learned with all of the Diocesan Schools. We thank all of the individuals across the Diocese who supported our St. Francis staff attending the NCEA conference, as it allowed us to grow in faith and knowledge and to rejoice in the work we do for St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School.
