He was born in 406 B.C. He was the most powerful king of the Huns. In 434, he began his reign over the Europe's largest empire. He is known for the invasion of the Balkans and taking control of Constantinople. He died in 453. Attila the Hun Rules The Vandals were a group from East Germany. In 455, they sacked Rome. This was the second of three attacks against the Romans. The Vandals Sack Rome Clovis was from a tribe known as the Franks. He became the first king of the Franks in 481. He was only sixteen. He was intelligent and brave. He is credited with bringing all of the Frankish tribes under one rule. Clovis Becomes King of the Franks Copyright 2011 A Journey Through Learning 16
He was the son of a Slavonic peasant and the nephew of Justin I. He became emperor in 527, after the death of Justin I. He was a great leader and credited with restoring the Roman Empire. Justinian Becomes Emperor of Rome Was elected as Pope in 590 after the death of Pelagius II. Before being elected, he was a Benedictine monk. His greatest achievement was breaking the power of the Lombards. Gregory the Great becomes Pope Was born in 686. He is most remembered for his rule of the Frankish tribe. In 732, he resisted the Muslim invasion and halted the northward flow of Islam into Europe. Charles Martel Copyright 2011 A Journey Through Learning 17
He was born in 714. He was the son of Charles Martel and the father of Charlemagne. It was the first Carolingian king of the Franks. Pepin defended Rome against the Lombards in 754. Pepin the Short Was born in 742, the son of Pepin the Short. In 768 he became the emperor of the Franks after the death of his father. During his reign, he set up an organized centralized system of government throughout his kingdom. Charlemagne Was born in 849. He reigned as the King of England from 871-899. Was born around 975. He was the son of Eric the Red. He is most remembered as leading Viking expeditions in 1002. Many believe that he may have been the first European to reach North America. Leif Ericson Was born in 1004. In 1042, he ascended to the throne of England. He is most remembered for rebuilding Westminster Abbey. Edward the Confessor This battle occurred on October 14, 1066. He became the first Norman King of England in 1066. William the Conqueror Began in 1095 and lasted over 200 years. It was a series of religious battles fought by different groups for control of the Holy Land. Crusades She was queen of France (1137 1152) and of England (1154 1189).
