Christ Our Life, We Believe: Grade 3 LESSON #1- Chapter 1: God Calls Us Teacher preparation: Read in advance from your Catechist s Guide Book pages T2-T11. This will present the material for today s class and will give you guidance and information for discussion as you cover this lesson with your class. Objective: In this chapter the children will learn that Abraham and Ruth are models of fidelity to God s call. They learn that faith means a willingness to do what God asks, knowing that God always brings us to a fuller, richer life. Getting acquainted activity (10 minutes) Introduce yourself to your class and share with them three things about yourself, then continue around the room having each child introduce themselves sharing three things about themselves. Ex: My name is.and I have five people in my family.my favorite color is etc. Have students turn to the back punch out pages in their workbooks (third page from the back. It will also say Chapter 1 next to it) and have them remove Made by God with Love badge. Have them write their names on the badges, color them and pin/tape on to their shirts. Pass out student workbooks having each student write their full names on the front cover. Help students remove pages V ( Note to Families ) - 10 from their workbooks. Staple these pages together making sure to place the Note to Families page on the top and have students write their names on the front page of the packet. Read/discuss/complete (40 minutes) the stapled workbook packets with the students. Asking for volunteers to help with the reading sections. Closing prayer: Let the children compose short prayers telling God what they believe Begin by saying: Dear God, I believe that you are good. (The children might add the following prayers of what they believe: that you love me, made me, take care of me, call me to live with you forever.) found on page T10 of Catechist Manual. Christ Our Life, We Believe: Grade 3 LESSON #2- Chapter 2: God Gives Us Gifts Teacher preparation: Read in advance from your Catechist s Guide Book pages T2-T11. This will present the material for today s class and will give you guidance and information for discussion as you cover this lesson with your class. Objective: In this chapter the children will be learning that each person fulfills God s plan in a different way. God gives us the gifts and talents we need to do this and that God expects us to be responsible for our talents: to develop them to the best of our ability and use them to improve ourselves, to help others, and to praise and glorify God. They will meet David who used his gifts this way. Pass out student workbooks Ask students to remove pages 11-18 from their workbooks. Staple these pages together and have students write their names on the front page of the packet. Read/discuss/complete (40 minutes) the stapled workbook packets with the students. Asking for volunteers to help with the reading sections. Activity: Have students turn to the back punch out pages in their workbooks (third page from the back.) and have them remove the My Talent gift box (it will also say Chapter 2 above it) Closing prayer: Let the children compose short prayers telling God what special gift they are thankful for Have each child begin by saying: Dear God, thank you for my special gift of (Ex. Singing, dancing, being a good athlete, good student ) Please have student s place their books on the bookshelves in your classroom at the end of class and send home the stapled lesson packets with your students encouraging them to share what they have learned today with their families.

Christ Our Life, We Believe: Grade 3 LESSON #3- Chapters 3 & 4: We Are God s Holy People / God Called Mary Teacher preparation: Read in advance from your Catechist s Guide Book pages T24-T40. This will present the material for today s class and will give you guidance and information for discussion as you cover this lesson with your class. Objective: In Chapter 3 the children will be learning that Jesus became man to show us how to live a holy life and to teach us the way to the Father. Through his Church and the saints, God continues to guide us. In Chapter 4 they will learn from Mary s example to answer the call of God willingly and promptly and become familiar with the Joyful Mysteries and taught how to pray the rosary. Pass out student workbooks Ask students to remove pages 19-34 from their workbooks. Staple these pages together and have students write their names on the front page of the packet. Pages that are not completed in class will be going home with the students for them to complete at home with their families. Read/discuss/complete (40 minutes) pages19-23 and pages 27-top of page 29-31. Asking for volunteers to help with the reading sections. Activity: Rosary Booklets (10 minutes) Have students turn to the back pullout section in their workbooks (beginning on page 283 and have them turn to pages 285-288.) and have them remove and staple together the 4 pages: The Joyful, The Luminous, The Sorrowful and The Glorious mysteries. Closing prayer: Begin with the Sign of the Cross followed by the Hail Mary prayers (found on inside front cover of workbooks). Please have student s place their books on the bookshelves in your classroom at the end of class and send home the stapled lesson packets with your students encouraging them to share what they have learned today with their families.

Grade 3 - Christ Our Life, We Believe Lesson #4- Chapter 5 Missionary Childhood Association speaker / Jesus Calls Us to Follow Activity (30 mins.)- Your students will be listening to a missionary from the Missionary Childhood Association speak about the need for all of us to be apostles for Christ. How we are Christ s hands and hearts here on earth and that through our extra efforts and prayers we can make a difference in other children s lives. Teacher preparation: Please read in advance your Catechist Guide Book pages T42-T52 this will present the material for today s class, the answers to the work pages and will have discussion points to help guide you through the lesson. Objective: In this chapter the children hear how Jesus called the apostles, the disciples and Paul. They learn that Jesus calls them, too, to follow his way of love and to share in his mission of leading all people to God. Pass out student workbooks and have students remove pages 35-44a-d Section in today s lesson, have children write their name on the top page of the packet. We will not be covering all of these pages in class due to the class being divided between listening to the MCA missionary and only having 30 minutes for today s lesson. The unfinished pages and pages 44a-d (pgs. 44a-d the Family Feature section, which is a section designed to be completed by the children at home together with their families). Read/discuss/complete (30 minutes) asking for volunteers to help with the reading with pages 35-44. Closing prayer: Act of Faith, Hope and Love (adapted) prayer found on the inside front cover of student workbooks: Jesus, I believe in you. Jesus, I hope in you. Jesus, I love you. Send home the MCA Mite boxes with your students, they will be collected in December. Have students please return their workbooks to the classroom shelves and remind them to bring home their stapled packet from today s lesson and encourage them to share what they have learned today with their families.

Grade 3 - Christ Our Life, We Believe Lesson #5- Chapter 6 We Believe in God Teacher preparation: Please read in advance your Catechist Guide Book pages T54-T65 this will present the material for today s class, the answers to the work pages and will have discussion points to help guide you through the lesson. Objective: God promised to free the Israelites, who were held as slaves by the Egyptians. In this chapter the children learn that God kept this promise through Moses. Realizing that God is always faithful to promises, the children are led to trust God and to pray with confidence for God s help. Pass out student workbooks and have students remove pages 45-56, making sure that page 46 A Letter Home page is on the top then have the children write their name on the top page of the packet. Read/discuss/complete (40 minutes) asking for volunteers to help with the reading with pages 45-56. Activity (10 minutes) Distribute one half sheet of colored paper to each student (I will have these for you). Have them fold the cards in half on the dotted line and write the words I Believe in God! on the front Decorate with the creation stickers/foam decorations that will remind them of the goodness of God Closing prayer: Act of Faith, Hope and Love (adapted) prayer found on the inside front cover of student workbooks: Jesus, I believe in you. Grade 3 - Christ Our Life, We Believe Lesson #6- Chapter 7 God is Powerful and Loving Teacher preparation: Please read in advance your Catechist Guide Book pages T68-T77 this will present the material for today s class, the answers to the work pages and will have discussion points to help guide you through the lesson. Objective: God manifested his promise throughout the Israelites journey to the Promised Land. Considering the incident at the Red Sea, the children learn the wisdom of relying on God, the allpowerful one. They recognize God s love in feeding his people with manna, and compare it to the Holy Eucharist. Realizing that God calls them to enter into a covenant of love, they are encouraged to respond as the Israelites did: Everything the Lord has said, we will do. (Exodus 19:8) Pass out student workbooks and have students remove pages 57-64, staple packets together then have the children write their name on the top page of the packet. Read/discuss/complete (40 minutes) asking for volunteers to help with the reading with pages 57-64. Activity (10 minutes) Direct the students to remove the tablets from the back of their books and to read aloud the key words of the Ten Commandments, see page T74 in Catechist Guide Book. Closing prayer: Begin with the Sign of the Cross and the Lord s Prayer (The Our Father) found on the inside front cover of the student workbooks Have students please return their workbooks to the classroom shelves and remind them to bring home their stapled packet from today s lesson and encourage them to share what they have learned today with their families.

Grade 3 - Christ Our Life, We Believe Lesson #7- Chapter 8 God is Holy and Great Teacher preparation: Please read in advance your Catechist Guide Book pages T78-T87 this will present the material for today s class, the answers to the work pages and will have discussion points to help guide you through the lesson. Objective: God revealed himself as the holy one when speaking to Moses in the burning bush. The children come to know God as holy, great, all-knowing and all-present. They grow in reverence for God and for God s name, as well as for other holy things as they review the Second Commandment. As their faith in the living God deepens, the children should strive to reflect God s holiness by acting more like Jesus. Pass out student workbooks and have students remove pages 65-74, staple packets together then have the children write their name on the top page of the packet. Read/discuss/complete (40 minutes) asking for volunteers to help with the reading with pages 65-74. Activity (10 minutes) Bookmarks (see page T88 in Catechist s Manual) Distribute a bookmark to each student (I will have these for you) Have the children design bookmarks to recall God s presence The children may cut the bookmarks in to the shape of a flame and write one of the possible sayings on the front: Walk in My Presence, The Lord is With Me!, God You Are Always Near, God Loves Me Direct the students to remove the tablets from the back of their workbooks and to read aloud the key words of the Ten Commandments, see page T74 in Catechist Guide Book. Christ Our Life, We Believe: Grade 3 LESSON #8- Chapters 9 & 10 God Is Just and Merciful / God Created People to Share His Life Teacher preparation: Read in advance from your Catechist s Guide Book pages T90-T110. This will present the material for today s class, the answers for the workbook pages and will give you guidance and information for discussion as you cover this lesson with your class. Objective: In chapter 9 the children will learn that God is always as just and merciful with us as God was with the Israelites. They become aware of the Father s justice and mercy as revealed by Jesus and as practiced by the saints. Chapter 10 will deepen the children s awareness that God created human beings to share in his divine life. The children gain a deeper appreciation of both God s goodness and the evil of sin, and they become more aware of Jesus presence with them at all times, helping them live his life. Pass out student workbooks Ask students to remove pages 75-84d, pages 85-90 and pages 235-236 (special Advent section) from their workbooks making sure that page 86 A Letter Home is on the top of the packet. Staple these pages together and have students write their names on the front page of the packet. Pages that are not completed in class will be going home with the students for them to complete at home with their families. Read/discuss/complete (45 minutes) pages 75-84 and pages 87- the top of page 90. Asking for volunteers to help with the reading sections. (10 minutes) Ask students if they were able to attend last night s Family Advent Night here at the Church allowing for those who attended to share some of what they did/learned. Read page 235 Advent insert to your students. Closing prayer: Begin with the Sign of the Cross followed by the Hail Mary prayers (found on inside front cover of workbooks). Please remind students that the MCA Mite Boxes will be collected next week at class. Christ Our Life, We Believe: Grade 3 LESSON #9- The Nativity Movie/ Chapter 11 God Sent His Son Jesus to Live Among Us Movie: The Nativity (30 minutes) will be viewed the first half of class today. Please have your students remain in the main meeting area of the Parish Center following opening prayer. Teacher preparation: Read in advance from your Catechist s Guide Book pages T112-T120. This will present the material for today s class, the answers for the workbook pages and will give you guidance and information for discussion as you cover this lesson with your class. Objective: The children will learn and realize anew that Jesus came to save them and show them the way to heaven. They are motivated to respond to God s love by following Jesus and living as he did. Pass out student workbooks: Ask students to remove pages 95-102 and pages 237-238 (special Christmas section) from their workbooks. Staple these pages together and have students write their names on the front page of the packet. Pages that are not completed in class will be going home with the students to complete at home with their families. Read/discuss/complete (25 minutes) pages 95-102 asking for volunteers to help with the reading sections. Closing prayer: Begin with the Sign of the Cross followed by the Hail Mary prayers (found on inside front cover of workbooks). Please remind students that the MCA Mite Boxes are still being collected throughout the month of December and they can be dropped off in the Faith Formation office during office hours. Christ Our Life, We Believe: Grade 3 LESSON #10- Chapter 12 Jesus Revealed the Kingdom of God Teacher preparation: Read in advance from your Catechist s Guide Book pages T122-T131. This will present the material for today s class, the answers for the workbook pages and will give you guidance and information for discussion as you cover this lesson with your class. Objective: In this chapter the children will learn that John the Baptist prepared the way for the coming of Jesus and that Jesus was baptized by John. As the children hear how Jesus overcame the temptations of the devil, they come to realize that God allows them to be tempted but always gives the grace necessary to resist the temptation. The children will also learn the meaning of Jesus parables about the Kingdom of God and begin to appreciate that kingdom as a priceless pearl. Pass out student workbooks: Ask students to remove pages 103-110 from their workbooks. Staple these pages together and have students write their names on the front page of the packet. Read/discuss/complete (40 minutes) pages 103-110 asking for volunteers to help with the reading sections. Activity (10 minutes) Pass out the foam sunflowers to your class (I will have these for you) Have each student cut out the I follow God by small sheets and glue in the center of their flower Discuss what helps us follow God (prayer, listening to the Word of God, celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation etc.) Using the markers from your supply box have the children print on the petals some ways they can nourish their faith and be true to what God is calling them to be. Christ Our Life, We Believe: Grade 3 LESSON #11- Chapter 13 Jesus Came to Give Life Teacher preparation: Read in advance from your Catechist s Guide Book pages T132-T141. This will present the material for today s class, the answers for the workbook pages and will give you guidance and information for discussion as you cover this lesson with your class. Objective: In this chapter the children come to realize that Jesus worked miracles to reveal his love and power and to strengthen our faith in him. They will become more aware of the social effects of sin and recognize more fully the healing power of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. They deepen their appreciation of Jesus love and learn to respond by acting as his instruments of healing power, manifesting his love in words and deeds. Pass out student workbooks: Ask students to remove pages 111-118 from their workbooks. Staple these pages together and have students write their names on the front page of the packet. Read/discuss/complete (40 minutes) pages 111-118 asking for volunteers to help with the reading sections. Activity (10 minutes) Have the children make bright colored sunshine cards (cards for the Nursing Home) with messages of love and happiness in them. Please bring the finished cards to my office at the end of class. I will deliver them to Bay Path Nursing Home residents with a group of EM s from Holy Family on Wednesday when we bring Communion to them. Grade 3: Christ Our Life, We Believe Lesson #12- Chapter 14 God s Kingdom is a Kingdom of Love Teacher Preparation: Read in advance from your Catechist s Guide Book pages T143-T152. This will present the material for today s lesson, the answers for the workbook pages and will give you guidance and information for discussion as you cover this lesson with your class. Objective: The children will deepen their understanding of God s kingdom as they review this unit. Realizing that true service to God includes keeping the commandments, they are inspired to live the spirit of God s kingdom by loving others as Jesus has loved them. Pass out student workbooks: Ask students to remove pages 119-128d (pages 128 a-d are the Family Feature explaining again to your students that this section is designed for them to do at home together with their family). Staple workbook pages together and have the children write their names on the front page of the packet. Read through and discuss the chapter /complete activity pages (40 minutes). Allowing for volunteers to help with the reading. Activity (15 minutes) Gospel Message in Code Tell the children how to send a Gospel message in code. To put a message into code, place under each letter the letter that comes just before it in the alphabet. To decode the message, have the children print under each letter the one that comes just after it. Do several examples on the board then let the children prepare their own messages. Ex: KNUDXNTQ DMDLHDR Love your enemies Have the children exchange their messages to decode them. This will present the material for today s lesson, the answers for the workbook pages and will give you guidance and information for discussion as you cover this lesson with your class. Objective: Jesus loves us with a forgiving love.
