DO EVERYTHING FOR THE GLORY OF GOD Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, Happy World Marriage Day, Happy World Day of Prayer for the Sick, and Happy Kickoff to the 2018 Campaign of the Parish Share Program! This weekend we have multiple reasons to celebrate, pray, and be charitable! In today's second reading St. Paul writes to the Corinthians, Whether you eat or drink, whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. Avoid giving offense to the Jews or Greeks or the church of God not seeking my own benefit but that of the many, that they may be saved. Then, in our Gospel, St. Mark writes, A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, If you wish, you can make me clean. Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, I do will it. Be made clean. The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. This weekend s scripture readings challenge us to look beyond ourselves and desire the good of the other for the sake of the other. This desire defines the Christian understanding of loving your neighbor. The Christian marriage vows between a husband and wife state that each spouse is a gift to the other that is free, total, faithful, and open to new life. Therefore, the Christian marriage is never forced, it holds nothing back from the beloved, it is undivided, and it openly participates in the marital bond that rejoices in the gift of new life. A similar self-offering is needed when caring for the sick. Accompanying a sick loved one who suffers from dementia, mental illness, the flu, cancer, or an addiction entails pouring out compassion, selfless love, and a perseverance to the end. Moreover, a donation to our Parish Share Program that supports the diocesan structures, which keep our parishes running smoothly is an act of reaching out to the margins, recognizing we are all one body in Christ. Saying Hi! to Louise and making a pledge to our Parish Share Program is a commitment to supporting both the wider needs of the diocese and the local needs of St. Andrew Parish. In all of the above, the motivation behind loving your spouse, caring for a sick loved one, and making a pledge to our Parish Share Program, is best when it is enacted for the glory of God and the good of the other for the sake of the other. God Bless You, Father Nick

LENT BEGINS ON ASH WEDNESDAY As the season of Lent draws near, we need to recall the word of the church with regards to fast, abstinence and other forms of penance. 1. ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY are days of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States. 2. Abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly. 3. Those who have a medical condition in which fasting may be harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity. 4. Parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age. 5. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law. 6. A request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless a serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, wedding rehearsals or receptions are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation. ASH WEDNESDAY LITURGY Mass will be celebrated and ashes distributed at 8:00am and 6:00pm on Ash Wednesday, February 14. Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence. The penance, fasting, almsgiving and all aspects of Lent are the hardships of the journey. The Church gives us ashes to show that we have pledged ourselves to walk with Christ during Lent. We pledge to live lives of greater holiness. STATIONS OF THE CROSS On Fridays during Lent, we will have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction from 5:30-6:30pm, and Stations of the Cross at 6:30pm, beginning February 16.
