US $4.00 C L A N W A L L A C E S O C I E T Y W O R L D W I D E The Guardian Published by the Clan Wallace Society Worldwide. Est. 1966. SUMMER 2010 VOL 44, NO 2 From The President: Your president has been traveling to Games and Festivals over the past several months. First, Sonora, California; then up to Albany, Oregon; back home for several days before we were off to Las Vegas, Nevada; that extended weekend followed by Woodland, California and then Prescott, Arizona. Getting around to these events and meeting Society members in person has been most gratifying. Wallace was the Honored Clan at Prescott; a total of 18 Wallace folks marched in the Parade of Clans, a number significantly higher than had been expected. To those taking the time to stop by Prescott on May 8, thank you for your support of Anna Wallace Cocklin, local convener in Prescott. Most everyone stayed on into the evening for the barbecue and great conversation at Watson Lake Park. One couple, Bill and Ada Wallace, traveled from Gresham, Oregon for this event, convoying with us from Dayton, Nevada to Prescott. Given a newsletter not yet out by mid-april, an email message was sent to some two dozen Society members in Arizona to advise of the Honored Clan status at Prescott, offering an invitation to attend that Saturday's Games at a marvelous location. Of the two dozen email messages sent out, nearly 20 percent bounced back, suggesting that some of our members are not providing the Membership Chairman, Charles Wallace, with updates to email and/or snail mail addresses when changing Internet Service Providers (ISPs), or when moving from one residence to another. Your Society has no way of knowing where you are, whether for email or snail mail purposes, unless we hear from you. An update function is included on the Society's web site, or send a brief letter to Charles Wallace at the address provided in each newsletter with both your old and new address, and if possible, your membership number. Several pending events with ties to Clan Wallace Society to mention. June 26 at 2:00 PM in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Robert Burns Monument has been refurbished and is to have its re-dedication. Included within the work done on the statue are paving stones, including one from Clan Wallace. Late in the year, on St. Andrews Day, November 30, groundbreaking is to commence in Philadelphia for a monument to immigrant Scots, those who came to the eastern seaboard to start a new life in a new land. Time for that event has yet to be posted. Our webmaster, Jim Bowie Wallace, has posted a link to that event at: http://clanwallace.org. We noted in the spring newsletter that Clan Wallace would be Honored Clan at several events later in the year. One of those, the Triad Games, canceled their event on relatively short notice, one of the issues we have to deal with when submitting notice of events in advance of their being seen in the newsletter. Another event scheduled for Grandfather Mountain in July was noted as honoring Clan Wallace. A misunderstanding in an email message on this subject has been clarified: Conveners Russ and Marcia Harper were honored with the Clan Tent Excellence Award at last year's event. Congratulations, Russ and Marcia! In late February when submitting the second letter for our award-winning newsletter, the following sentence was written: Generating a newsletter sounds relatively easy on its face, but does take a concerted amount of time and effort to get such a task completed in a timely manner. At the time, looking at a transition from former editor, Marcus J. Wallace, to our new editor, Dick Wallace, appeared likely to go quite well. His first effort took much longer than we had anticipated might be required for that first newsletter. When the first draft came along, we were pleasantly surprised to see how well his opening salvo appeared. Given the experience Dick has gained with his first newsletter, our expectation is that future newsletters will come along much quicker, making that timely manner work for those of us submitting information with time-sensitive material. Crawfords and Wallaces unite again in Albany and Eugene, Oregon. See page 8 for the story. Page 2 SUMMER 2010 Perfect Day in Prescott May 8, 2010 was a perfect day in Prescott, Arizona for the 6 th Annual Highland Games, located at Watson Lake Park, a lovely green area for tents, games, musical groups and vendors. Clan Wallace was the Honored Clan, so we were very pleased to have President of Clan Wallace Society Worldwide Robert Bruce Wallace and his wife Lois present along with about 20 Wallace's in the March of the Clans. In addition to the locals and above mentioned, there were Wallace-connected attendees from Quebec and Manitoba, Canada; Portland, OR; Tucson, Yuma, Glendale, Mesa and Gilbert, AZ. Twenty-three visitors signed our 31st Arkansas Scottish Festival Lyon College, Batesville, Arkansas Richard H. (Dick) Wallace of Little Rock, Arkansas convened this game with assistance from Marcus J. (Jim) Wallace of Corinth, Texas. The weather was very pleasant right on up to Friday night/ Saturday morning when we were all reminded what spring in Scotland could be like. The rains came and stayed. Water was not only running in the culverts, it was actually running under the plastic tarps we used as floors for the tents. Several tents had been knocked down during the night, including the main tent for performances. In addition to it s being partially down, the opposite end was standing in a pool of water. Performances were moved to Brown Chapel. guest book. Many were repeat attendees. Arizona's own Chief James McBain of McBain was present and opened the Games. A letter of appreciation and a plaque were presented to the local Clan Wallace by the Prescott Area Celtic Society, sponsors of the Games. The Games were a huge success with over 2,000 in attendance. We had many visitors to our tent checking our literature and books on display. The young boys were especially attracted by the Wallace Sword replicas. This is an event for both young and old. Ancient Heavy Events, three Pipe and Drum bands, sheep dog events, Highland dancers and music groups kept everyone entertained. Anna Wallace Cocklin, convenor While the rain diminished the crowds, it did not diminish the spirits of the people participating in the games. Those that braved the elements seemed to be having a good time. Marcus Wallace, convenor Drum Roll Please! As you know, Clan Wallace Worldwide supports the High Desert Pipes and Drums from New Mexico (our official band), who will be going again to compete in the World Pipe Band Championships (Glasgow in 2011), but did you know that other pipe and drum bands from Ontario (Midland - Beth DesRochers, PM) Vancouver, BC and New Zealand (Manukau - Barry Wallace, PM) wear the WALLACE TARTAN. PAGE 3 SUMMER 2010 PUBLISHED BY THE CLAN THE WALL GUARDIAN ACE SOCIETY WORLDWIDE. EST. 1966. June 2010 If you will remember last year the Board promised to keep you up to date, as best as possible, on the Major International Projects Program which is basically funded by the donations received through the CWSW Rewards Program. Currently we have three ongoing efforts that involve CWSW participation, and the following is a short status report on each of them: Firstly, The Society has funded a Commemorative Clan Wallace Society Granite Paver for placement at the Robert Burns Restoration Site in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A photo of the Paver is shown below. The dedication of this work is taking place as we publish and CWSW will have representation at the ceremony. Look for a follow on newsletter article on this project soon and on the Website. Secondly, The Society has donated funds toward the design and construction of a Scottish Memorial at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by the St Andrew s Society of Philadelphia. This major monument will consist of a Statue of a Scottish Family with Hound, three Standing Stones, and a Cairn; all sited on a dedicated tract of land near TUN Tavern. The Society will be recognized on a bronze plaque on the Cairn. The ground breaking for this major project is tentatively scheduled for St Andrews Day, 30 November 2010. Plans are being made to have Board and Member representation at this event. More will be published on the CWSW Website as the plans come to fruition. CWSW Rewards Program documents for this effort. We will keep you posted in future newsletter and on line of the progress of this project and our involvement in it. In addition, the Board will, from time to time, also have other articles and announcements in the CWSW Newsletter and on our Clan Wallace Web Site highlighting important mile markers for all of our important international projects, so watch for this information. Should you feel you want to be more involved personally in this Program, we recommend that you contact The Rewards Chairman John R. Wallace at: CWSW Rewards Program 110 Azalea Dr Walterboro, SC 29488-2605 Ph: 843-782-4480 johnrwallace@comcast.net to make a tax exempt contribution to the Rewards Program and join the many other members of the Society who wear the distinctive and unique insignia reflecting their loyalty and dedication to our important work. Since the last report in the Spring Vol 44 No 1 issue of the Guardian, there continues to be significant Rewards participation. Join the President and the Board of Directors in proudly recognizing the following members for their donations; The Circle of the Knight This prestigious Reward, A Knight s Medal and Framed Certificate, was presented to Jeane for her accumulated donation of $ 1000. Well Done! The Circle of the Saltire To CWSW Commissioner for Canada Dorothy Wallace Knight Dorothy has an accumulated donations valued at $ 500 to achieve this third highest Reward level and was presented with a Framed Certificate and Saltire Pin recognizing her important contributions and strong participation in the Program. Congratulations Dorothy!!!! Further recognition goes to Circle of the Knight Council Member Marcia Harper of Lewisville, North Carolina, for her continued excellent support of our Program. Marcia made another donation of $ 120 during this period bringing her totals to date to $ 1320. An additional $ 120 donation was also received by Circle of the Saltire Council Member Russell Harper of Lewisville, North Carolina, bringing his total to date to $ 720. Russ is well on his way to the Circle of the Knight level. Thirdly, the Society is considering support of a project involving the Upgrading of the Wallace Monument at Robroyston, Glasgow, Scotland plus work on the Wallace Well and the connection of these two sites by a walkway. The Board is in communication with the Development and Regeneration Services Team in Glasgow who are preparing the briefs and planning To Life Member Jeane Wallace Whittenburg of St Peters, Missouri The President and the Board of Directors send along their deepest thanks for all this wonderful support and invites all Clan Wallace Society Members to join us in this important program.

Chill before serving. Last year...on the way to Edinburgh...some Wallace s from DOWN UNDER came to visit! William Wallace (Aberdeen) and Elaine Ries (San Diego) Convenor s Corner I hope this finds everyone trying to stay cool this summer. We are gearing up for our fall games, two in Tennessee, one in September - we will be in Memphis for ClanJamfry and the first of November we will head just down the road to Celtic Fest in Jackson. We are so glad that we found out about the second festival last year in Tennessee since we had lost several games that were held in Arkansas and lost another we had discovered (SwampCelt) in Louisiana where they throw alligators instead of beer kegs. We wanted to be able to attend and convene at more than just one game a year. Please ask other convener s that might be from a neighboring state which festival they enjoy going to. You might end up finding something new and lots of fun to add to your schedule. Hope to see some of you in October for the Atlanta Stone Mountain Jean Wallace games. This is a really great game to attend, and if you have never been once, I know you will want to go back again and again. Let me know if you have a favorite game(s) that is a must go - at least once in a lifetime and let us help others have fun too! The map to your left should also inspire you to GONE AWAW, as our kilt maker did when we sent our kilt order to Scotland and discovered that he too was on vacation and had also gone away. My advice to you is to find a new game or festival to GONE AWAW to.

PAGE 5 SUMMER 2010 From our Canadian Advisor Dorothy Knight The Canadian Corner Sudbury Celtic Festival and Highland Games May 20 th found us heading some 400 miles north to attend the 3 rd annual Sudbury festival. Altho there were only 2 clan tents...young and Wallace...present, the festival attracted many. We were kept quite busy answering questions pertaining to various clans, and we acquired 4 Wallace signatures. Ashley MacIssac of La- Salle On.(near Windsor) by way of Cape Breton NS. was the featured entertainer. Seven pipe bands paraded the field and 'My Plight!' Email message By Bob Wallace and Jim Bowie Wallace One of our Society members from the Pacific Northwest was the subject of an email message hoax on Monday, June 21, the message claiming that he had been victimized somewhere in Wales and stranded there unless one or more individuals would offer immediate assistance. The alleged victim was not out of the country at the time and was in no danger. It is unknown how many CWS members received the message, but it appears to have been a relatively small number, some of whom made phone calls to learn whether the story was true, several others sending off email messages to determine if the story was true or not. As with many of these hoax messages, the spelling and word usage usually serve to alert the message reader that there is something fishy with the story being presented. In this specific instance, the average first year English student would have been given a failing grade by their instructor! As CWS Webmaster Jim Bowie Wallace points out, a virus may have gotten into someone's computer and found the address book, picked off the names and started generating outgoing email messages to those names. Whether the email list was on a Clan Wallace Society member's computer or just happened to have a few CWS email addresses is not known. As Jim Bowie also points out, any email message with a sob story asking for monetary assistance is an email message that ought to be suspicious. Do NOT reply to it highland dancers, with heavy events competing. The Wallace tent was honoured by having 4 generations of Knights in attendance. The youngest being 4 year old Tyler Knight, of Sault Ste. Marie ON. Mother Nature shone on us that day! Georgetown Highland Games These games took place June 12 and Mother nature was not kind to us this day. Scottish mist and a soft steady rain made for an unproductive day...however events went on as usual, including 400+ highland d a nc er s...m os t un d er 12 yr s old...performing en mass in the steady rain. The turn-out was excellent. or click any link within it! Check it out independently first. One trick to prevent SPAM is to start the computer first thing in the morning, then start the web browser and log in to your service's web email account, check all the messages posted during the night, looking for anything that appears to be spam or otherwise unwanted. By putting an X in the tick box next to a message and clicking on the Spam button, that message is set aside for checking by your service's tech people (at least in theory). By X -ing a message and clicking on the Delete button, that message goes off the server and never shows up on your home computer. Following this practice keeps messages posted during the night hours off your computer because they're removed from your email account before starting the email program to download what's on the server. If any message appears questionable, that message can be opened and read on the web mail server without doing any potential damage to your computer, and then marked as spam or deleted from the server without ever getting to your desktop or laptop computer. Good Advice By Jim Bowie Wallace, CWS Webmaster Seventy percent of all email traveling on the Internet is SPAM or You must see this stories that people forward to their friends thinking that the story should be known by all. Do not forward these stories until you have personally checked them out. Best way to see if said story is true or false is to check at the Urban Legends Reference web site: http://www.snopes.com. True SCOTS at heart!! Convenors Norm and Ty Knight In the Snopes search box, type in the title or some identifying part of the story you received. Snopes.com will then display a list of stories that may fit yours. Click on the best fit and find out if the story is TRUE, FALSE, or only partly true. Do whatever you want with it, but don't just forward it to everyone in your address book. If you do send it on to others, PLEASE, PLEASE strip out all the previous headers and footers before you send it on. Be courteous to your friends. Headers are those blocks of stuff that have the DATE:, TO:, FROM: and SUBJECT: and blah, blah, blah lines. You don't like seeing all that junk, so why make your friends see it?

PAGE 6 SUMMER 2010 Pipe Dreams You never quite know what is going to come your way. This past January, Bob and I were enjoying a wee bit of Scotch tasting at the Nevada Society of Scottish Clans Burns night dinner when we were approached with an idea. An all-nevada Pipe and Drum band was in the embryo stages. Band members would come from Reno, Las Vegas and Elko (look it up on a map) they would come together and practice with the intent of traveling to Glasgow, Scotland to compete in the Worlds pipe band competition in 2011, in part to commemorate fifty years of piping in the state of Nevada. What a great idea! Wouldn t it be even better if a group of non-band members would go to Scotland and cheer the band on? Knowing that Bob and I successfully organized and led tours to Scotland, we were approached to put together such a tour. The discussion between Bob and I went like this: The Battle Born Pipes and Drums is rapidly becoming a reality. Battle Born is Nevada s state motto. Organization and details of the Pipe Dreams tour for us appreciative spectators is also progressing. The tour will focus on piping encompassing the Worlds competition, Piping Live festival, Edinburgh Military Tattoo and many more unique points of interest. Full details will be available in October. The trip is open to all who like Bagpipes and Scotland; you don t have to be from Nevada to enjoy a visit to Scotland or listen to bagpipes. The tour is part of the fundraising effort for this gutsy group of Scottish musicians. The trip will be enjoyable for the first time traveler as well as those like us who have experienced Scotland before. Last we spoke with Bill Horn from the High Desert Pipes and Drums from Albuquerque (Clan Wallace supported Band), they were considering competing in 2011 as well. Maybe your local band will be there? Last year s numbers from the competition were eight thousand musicians from sixteen countries. Now that is a sight I want to see! Check out www.battlebornpipband.org or contact me at lois-wallace@charter.net or 775-671- 0148 to get the information. We would love to have you come along with us. One thing leads to another even while enjoying a wee dram. You truly never know what is going to come your way when you are immersed in all things Scottish. By Lois A. Wallace Jim Wallace, Cathy Jones, Garret Whiteside, Wayne Jones and Lowell Martin There was something for everyone to enjoy, especially the Scottish Highland Games competition held with Professional Scottish Highland and Super "A" Amateur athletic competitors from the East Coast and South Dakota. Although the attendance was down due to the weather, all attendees to the festival had a great time. The Clan Wallace tent welcomed many Wallaces and other visitors throughout the day. It was a great day of comradery with Cathy, Board Member and Convenor Jim "Bowie" Wallace, Convenors Garret Whiteside and Ralph Wallace, and members George F. Wallace and Lowell and Marilyn Martin. every time we have been to Scotland we have said we have to come back for the Worlds someday. It looks like our someday has come in a different form then anticipated, but it is here, let s go for it. This took about thirty seconds. As you can imagine, we said yes! Mid-Maryland Saint Andrews Society Wayne Jones reports that the 11 th Frederick Celtic Festival, hosted by the Mid- Maryland Saint Andrews Society was held on May 8, 2010, at the Frederick Fair Grounds in Frederick, MD. It was a blustery day with winds in the 40+ mph range that lifted nd tour tent covers and bent tent frames. In spite of this, the Patrons were entertained throughout the day by bagpipe bands, Scottish and Irish dancing. The featured acts at the Pub Tent were That Raucous Crew, A Rose Between Two Thorns, Rant & Roar, and Moch Pryderi. Celtic dancing was presented by the Frederick Scottish Country Dancers, the Tir na nog Irish Dance Troupe, the McGrath Academy of Irish Dance, the Granfling School of Dance, the Teelin Irish Dance Company, the Seneca Creek Longsword and Garland, and the Silver Spring Scottish Country Dancers. Wallace Monument at Kearny, New Jersey By Captain John R. Wallace Very recently while traveling Southward through New Jersey on the way to Newark Airport from a gathering of Knight Friends at West Point, New York, I and my traveling companion, also a Wallace, Lisa Donant, left the main road in search of a gasoline station. As we drove along the Passaic River, we noted a small but elegant park along the road with structures familiar to most of us of Scottish descent; a Cairn and a Celtic Cross. Our imaginations thus peaked; we drove on to get the gasoline, with the intention of returning to explore this site a bit more before heading onward to the Airport. The town was called Kearny, New Jersey. When we returned we found there were four structures on the site; A large sign that announced that the site was WALLACE GLEN and that it was dedicated to the memory of Sir William Wallace, the Great Scottish Patriot and Hero, and to David A. (Jim) Wallace and Jim s youngest grandson Johnathan Wallace The Texas Scottish Games and Highland Festival was held in Maverick Stadium at the University of Texas-Arlington, Arlington, Texas. This was the 24th year for these games. We had four new members sign up and 14 people sign the register, several of these took membership applications. I am always amazed at the ability of those of us of Scottish heritage who can put on woolen hose, nine yards of the best Scottish tartan and sit in 98-100 degree heat with minimal breezes and enjoy it. Aye Lads, there is something special about such people. Several members of the Society came by and said hello, Bob Graham and his wife, and Reggie Jackson among others. Also, old friends from games past stopped by, all-in-all a very enjoyable day. This was a joint effort with Clan Leslie. Frank Leslie sets up for Clan Leslie and due to my recent surgery (shoulder) volunteered to set up the two tents and assist me during the day. Being a life member of Clan Wallace Society (Worldwide) he has a Wallace Tartan kilt in addition to his Leslie Tartan kilt and is qualified to set up in the name of Clan Wallace in his own right. He and his wife Lynne are good friends. SMALL & MIGHTY Albany, Oregon Oregon starts out with small festivals in the spring. They may be small but they are mighty and have lots of help from Clan Wallace. At The Oregon Scottish Festival on April 10 th in Albany, President Bob Wallace and his wife Lois were honored guests; Mary Wallace Kelsey s famous kitchen had the best shepherd s pie and Scottish delights, Susan Vollmer of Clan Wallace had a Celtic Kids corner with volunteers from Girl Scout Troop 10093 and her family. William S. Wallace of Gresham and Susan Vollmer were part of the Scots Guard presenting the Colors. Norma Wallace made a display using a lithograph of the Declaration of Arbroath and pictures from the Clan Wallace visit to Arbroath. William J. Wallace of Bend held down the fort at the Clan Wallace booth with help for Ada & Lois. Lois also found a treasure of the Wallace tartan at the used clothing booth one size 24 skirt is now the skirt for the Clan Wallace table. It just took a little altering. Eugene, Oregon On May 15 th the Eugene Scottish Festival had the nicest weather ever. There was even an unusual rainbow over the Wallace and Crawford tents. Susan Vollmer and William S. Wallace were proud to present the Colors again. There was much activity at the Clan Wallace Booth and Randy Campbell joined CWS. He has Wallace blood in his veins. It s a small world he has a connection to Norma s home town of Freeport, Illinois. The Crawford s and the Wallace had adjoining tents which makes an interesting day talking about the Wallace Crawford connection. The Crawfords and Wallaces got together for the photo below.
