One interpretation of scripture - II Peter 1:20-21 From Are we Living in the End Times? by Tim Lahaye and Jerry Jenkins page 103-104 The coming of Christ must occur in two installments because they are for two different groups of people and fulfill two different purposes. The first is the Rapture, when all living and dead Christians will be snatched up to be with Christ in the Father s house. The second is for all the people of the world, who will be judged for rejecting Christ. The first is secret, for a special group; the second is public, for everyone left on the earth. They are entirely distinct events! So according to the pre-millennialists, the church (or the righteous) is secretly raptured off of the earth when Jesus secretly shows up. Then the un-righteous are left here on earth to face the great tribulation for 7 years. Then Jesus comes back to earth to establish His kingdom for 1000 years. Now there are three main verses pre-millennial teachers will use to teach this view of the rapture. Let s take a look at a couple of those now. John 14:1-3 This verse says that Jesus has prepared dwelling places in heaven for all of His followers and that He is coming back to get His own to take them back up to heaven with Him. However this verse does not specifically mention the rapture. Only one verse in the scripture specifically mentions the rapture. The word that always gets used as rapture is the one usually translated as caught up in verse 17. It is the Greek word Harpazo and it means: 1. to seize, carry off by force 2. to seize on, claim for one s self eagerly 3. to snatch out or away They call this the secret rapture: If it is a secret, why do they mention the Lord as descending? If it is a secret, we would not see Him anyway so who cares whether He is ascending or descending. We have 3 things listed here as sounding: The Lord will shout The Voice of the archangel And the trumpet of God Does that sound like it is supposed to be a secret? So the Lord is going to shout so that no one hears? Is that what they want us to believe? No all 3 of these things are going to be loud enough to wake the dead. Also you have a bunch of people coming up out of the graves and ascending to meet the Lord in the air. Does that sound like something that will not be seen? I am having trouble picturing this as a secret. 1

Secret rapture where did the idea begin? As near as we can tell by those who have studied the topic (i.e. Dave McPherson and others) that the whole concept of a secret rapture was unknown before the year 1830. It originated in a town called Port Glasgow, Scotland. In that town there were some church meetings taking place and during that time there was a 15 year old girl in that church by the name of Margaret McDonald. She became ill and was at home with a very high fever. And while in a delirious trance, she had a dream of Christians being taken out of the earth so they would not have to go through a tribulation period. Later in that same year, Edward Irving (1792-1834) her Scottish Presbyterian minister and forerunner of the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements, attended prophecy conferences that began in Dublin Ireland at Powerscourt Castle. There he promoted this doctrine of the Secret Rapture. John Nelson Darby (1800-1882), a minister of the Church of Ireland, later became a member of the Plymouth Brethren and also promoted a Secret Rapture after attending the same Powerscourt Bible Prophecy meeting in 1830 where he learned of Margaret McDonald's vision. He visited Margaret McDonald at her home in Port Glasgow, Scotland. And he later visited America several times where his Secret Rapture theology was quite well accepted. The writings of John Darby greatly influenced Cyrus Scofield (1843-1921) who incorporated this doctrine into the notes of his Scofield Reference Bible, first published by Oxford University Press in 1909. One million copies were printed by 1930, firmly establishing this Futurist interpretation in the Bible schools and denominations of the United States in the 20th Century. What Does the Scripture Say? But really where it came from does not matter to me. The real question should be does it fit with the scripture? So according to the pre-millennial teachers in looking at this verse, the church (or the righteous) is secretly raptured off of the earth and the un-righteous are left here on earth to face the great tribulation. Let s see if this fits with the scripture. The first set of verses we are going to look at are espoused by some pre-millennial teachers (ie. Hal Lindsey) as perfect scriptural evidence for the rapture. However, Tim Lahaye does not mention it in his list of Rapture or Second Coming verses at all. J. Dwight Pentecost also mentions these verses as being part of the second advent as well but they speak very little of it because there are things written in it they cannot explain. 2

Matthew 24:37-41 OK, so we know that in Noah s day, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage. So let me ask a couple of questions. When the flood came, who was left on the earth the righteous or the un-righteous? The righteous were left on the earth in the persons of Noah and his family. And which group of people were taken the righteous or the un-righteous? The un-righteous were of course taken. So what it is going to be like at the Second Coming of Christ? It is going to be just like the days of Noah, the un-righteous will be taken and the righteous will be left. There will be two men in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one will be left. (Matthew 24:40-41). The unrighteous will be taken and the righteous will be left. Now why doesn t Lahaye and other pre-millennial teachers talk about this verse much? Well first off, when they teach about the second advent, Christ is coming back with His holy ones and there are no folks defined as being snatched away or taken. And second, this verse, along with the next 20 or so verses, go on to say to be alert for you do not know which day your Lord is coming Well if you believe in the pre-millennial teaching, you know exactly when He is coming back. If you are alive during the tribulation, it will be exactly 7 years after the saints disappear. And if you were raptured, you don t need to be alert, because you will be coming back with Christ when He comes back to earth. So the verse does not fit with what they believe. Matthew 13:24-30 So here we have the parable of the wheat and tares. So this sounds like a very intriguing story. Obviously we know that the wheat is the good stuff and the tares are bad and we see that in verse 40, the tares are going to be bundled up and thrown into the fire. Sometimes these parables are difficult to figure out. But the good news is Jesus interprets this parable for us. Matthew 13:36-40 So God is going to send forth his angels and they are going to gather up all tares from the kingdom and burn them up with fire. Matthew 13:41-43 So again Jesus mentions that He will send forth his angels and they are going to gather up all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness (tares) and they will be thrown into the furnace of fire. But then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. So non-christians will be taken first and the Christians will be left. Matthew 13:47-50 So again in this parable of the dragnet Jesus mentions that the wicked will be taken away from the righteous, not the other way around. The scripture is very consistent on this topic but it is completely backwards as to what the pre-millennial teachers teach. Now lets take a second look at the I Thessalonians passage. 3

Now Paul here in these verses is of course comparing the Christian dead and Christian living at the Second Coming. And Paul lets us know that the dead in Christ shall rise first. But then he says there are some who are alive and remain. How did that remain word get in there? It was mentioned twice like this to bring out the full effect. So there were some that were alive and remaining which means there were some who were alive that did not remain. In other words like we saw in the other parables, the unrighteous would have already been taken and then those that are alive and remain (the righteous) will be left. Then they will be caught up together with the Lord in the air. So we have wheat growing with tares in the kingdom of heaven and God already knows who the wheat and who the tares are. So At the second coming, Jesus will be coming back with angels and here we see the angels going throughout the entire land gathering all the unrighteous and binding them, then the Christians will be gathered and joined with resurrected Christians to meet the Lord in the air. Just as a reminder, there is nothing in the Greek language that allows them to separate these two events. There is nothing in the context of the verses about the Lord s return that allows them to separate the two either. Let s remember the quote from John Walvoord we read quite a few weeks ago about the Greek words used about the Lord s Second Coming (parousia, apokalupsis, and epiphanea). It is the viewpoint of the writer that all three terms are used in a general and not a technical sense, and that they are descriptive of both the rapture and the glorious return of Christ to the earth (J. Dwight Pentecost, Things to Come, p.156). Again, just to translate what he just said since they are not used in a technical sense, we can make them say whatever we would like them to say. The Last Trumpet Here is a verse that Tim Lahaye says is going to take place during the rapture of all Christians off the earth. And by the way, this is the third of the great rapture verses that are used as proof positive of a rapture. I Corinthians 15:51-53 These verses say that at the last trumpet for the trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised. This verse is very consistent with I Thessalonians 4 that it mentions a trumpet going off. In fact, this verse calls it the last trumpet. Does the Holy Spirit know when the last trumpet will sound? Now let s take a look at a verse that is listed in their Second Coming passages: Matthew 24:30-31 Obviously the Holy Spirit that was working through Paul had no idea when the last trumpet was because here we have a trumpet going off 7 years after the last trumpet. 4

Coming Back on the Clouds Acts 1:9-11 So when Jesus comes back, he is coming back on the clouds. So there are two comings of Jesus Christ mentioned in the scripture one when he comes into His kingdom and one when He comes back both are mentioned as happening on the clouds. His being here during His earthly sojourn is never mentioned as a coming in the scripture but an appearance or a manifestation. So when he comes back, He is coming back on the clouds. It does not say it is going to be a secret. Again this verse says that we (Christians) will be going up to meet the Lord on the air on the cloud and then will be taken up to heaven. The Day of the Lord that Comes Like a Thief in the Night Also you will notice that they have listed as a rapture passage and they have II Peter 3:1-14 listed as a Second Coming passage. This is of course the great rapture verse. However if you keep reading into chapter 5 you will read the following: I Thessalonians 5:1-2 So the Holy Spirit through the apostle Paul calls the verses as the day of the Lord that comes like a thief in the night. According to the scripture, what is supposed to happen on the day of the Lord that comes like a thief in the night? II Peter 3:10-12 So here Peter says that the day of the Lord that comes like a thief in the night is going to involve the whole world being burned up with intense heat. Now how can the premillennial teachers separate these events by 1007 years when the scripture calls it the day of the Lord that comes like a thief in the night. Again there is nothing in the scripture that allows them to separate these events into 2 separates occurrences. The scripture is clear. When Christ comes back, as we learned a couple of weeks ago, all the dead will be resurrected in an hour (John 5:28, 29). Then His angels will gather the un-righteous (living and resurrected), bundle them and cast them into the furnace of fire. 5

The Day of Judgment Now Pre-millennialists teach us that there are 3 different judgments that are coming Christians just after the rapture Living Gentiles, Living Jews, OT Saints and Tribulation Saints after the tribulation Satan, the Unsaved, Heaven and Earth at the end of the Millennium. So again these are all separated by 1007 years. (Tim Lahaye, Charting the End Times; Harvest House Publishers, Eugene, OR 97402 p. 122) Here in this verse Peter said that heaven and earth were being reserved for fire for the Day of Judgment. Premillennialists will teach that there will be 3 separate judgments all within a 1007 year period. Matthew 10:15; 11:22-24; 12:36 o So these verses from Matthew let us know that there will be one day of judgment what Jesus called the Day of Judgment. II Peter 2:9; I John 4:17 o So here Peter and John are backing up what Jesus said in that there is going to be one day of Judgment Acts 24:25 o And this verse lets us know that there is one judgment to come. And it will take place on one day. And what day is that? The day that Jesus returns to execute judgment. Now the pre-millennial teachers tell us that Christ is coming back to setup His kingdom. However, II Thessalonians 1:6-10 So this verse says that Christ is coming back with his angels to deal out retribution to two groups of people those that do not know God and those that do not obey the gospel. Jesus Christ is returning to execute judgment not to establish His kingdom. The kingdom is already here. Jude 1:14-15 This verse makes it clear that He is coming back to execute judgment and not to establish His kingdom So after the unrighteous are taken off the earth for judgment, then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together, along with those Christians who were resurrected, to meet the Lord in the air. And once we are lifted off the earth, it and all things about it are going up in smoke. It will be melted with intense heat. Then Christians will stand before the judgment seat of Christ as well (II Corinthians 5:10; Romans 14:10). Christians are the ones that the end of the ages will fall on in fact this verse says they have already come upon us I Corinthians 10:11. The New Testament was written for our (the churches) instruction and not to any other group. 6
