LEARNING OBJECTIVES Students will be able to articulate a biblical basis for missions Students will become familiar with broad outline of the history of the missionary outreach of the church Develop an understanding of the present state of the worldwide church Gain practical insights on the role of the pastor and the local church in world mission Be able to find resources for missions on the web Students will understand the process of an individual becoming and then serving as a missionary (missionary life and service) Become acquainted with some of the key issues in missions today. Be challenged and equipped to become personally involved with the Gospel to your own Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the ends of the earth. Begin a lifelong personal commitment to worldwide missions through learning about missions, praying, going, sending, welcoming, and mobilizing. COURSE TEXTS Moreau, A. Scott, Gary R. Perspectives on the World Christian Movement: A Reader 4 th edition (see Reading Log) COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Reading Log 10%. To be turned in at the end of the course. 2. Course Attendance and Participation 10%. Additional daily assignments may also be given. 1
3. Writing Assignments 50%. Ten Short Reflection Papers. Each paper is to be double spaced and 350 to 400 words. Five papers are on readings from Moreau and are to demonstrate that you have read the assignment and have reflected on the readings by integrating readings with theoretical ideas and personal experience. Choose one chapter from each of the five Parts in Moreau (for example, from Part 1, you can choose from chapters 2, 3, 4, or 5). Identify the key points in the chapter and provide your own thoughts and insights into the topics. Papers are due as scheduled below. The remaining five paper topics are chosen from the list below. The purpose of these five papers is help you bridge coursework to your ministry context. o Examination of the missiological implications of the Lausanne Covenant o Discussion of a movie on missions such as End of a Spear or Candle in the Dark o Development of a sermon series on missions o You views on an article in the readings or topic discussed in class o Analysis of a short term mission trip o Analysis of a local church policy manual o A comparison of mission organizations o An outline of a mission strategy o A plan to develop a local church vision for missions involvement among a particular age group 4. Final Exam Project 30%. Enter into cross cultural ministry experience such as evangelism, worship, teaching or social concern, connected with a church, parachurch organization. Observe, participate, ask questions, make notes, and think critically. Be insightful. You will be graded on how you use what you ve learned. Start early. It s impossible to do this kind of exam at the last minute. Write a couple pages on each of the following three parts: 1) Discuss the issues involved in the context 2) Address relevant missiological principles at play 3) Draw conclusions on how these principles should shape attitudes, strategy, and practices for ministry in relation to the specific context. COURSE FORMAT Class sessions are a crucial part of the course. Classroom time will be divided between lecture and discussion. Because of the discussion nature of the course it is important to complete assigned readings before class. Since we are meeting on only six days full attendance is expected. If you must miss a class for an unexpected emergency you can interview a person who in the class and turn in your written summary of the class you missed. You will receive a partial reduction of your grade. 3
The readings are essential as they provide a systematic overview of the content that must be mastered. The readings will often also form the basis of class discussion.
