THE OFFERTORY The Chancel Choir/Dr. James Smith, Music Director A Hymn to God the Father (John Ness Beck/words by John Donne, 1572-1631) Wilt Thou forgive that sin where I begun, Which is my sin, though it were done before? Wilt Thou forgive that sin through which I run and do still run, though still I do deplore? When Thou hast done, Thou hast not done, for I have more. Wilt Thou forgive that sin which I have won others to sin, and made my sin their door? Wilt Thou forgive that sin which I did shun a year or two, but wallowed in a score? When Thou hast done, Thou hast not done, for I have more. I have a sin of fear that when I ve spun my last thread, I shall perish on the shore; Swear by Thyself, that at my death Thy Son shall shine as He shines now and heretofore; And, having done that, thou hast done. I fear no more. *Response #95 UMH The Doxology *unison Prayer of Dedication Compassionate God, you who reveal your power above all in your mercy and forgiveness, open us up by the power of your grace that we may know our authentic self in your abundant love. Give us courage to share from this place of plenty filled with your Spirit as we walk in the Way of Jesus. Amen. The Sacrament of Holy Communion We will use the Musical Setting D on pages 23-24 in The United Methodist Hymnal. Gluten-free vegan wafers are available from the servers upon request. The Ushers will guide you in coming forward to receive the communion elements. Patricia Farris God of extravagant life-giving love, you never leave us, but constantly cherish each of your children. Strengthen us by this meal to share that same love with all we meet, following in the way of Jesus Christ. Amen. *hymn #2208 The Faith We Sing Guide My Feet *BENEDICTION *Benediction response Postlude Fugue in G minor - the Little (J. S. F O C U S O N March 5, 2017 simple church by Rev. Robert English, New & Emerging Ministries simple church is a new worshiping community of First UMC. We exist to cultivate calm, centered and compassionate lives at 5 p.m. on Sunday evenings in the Chapel. The worship gathering is quiet, contemplative and traditional, but also informal with music by Jack McHugh (piano) and Holly Pitrago (vocals). I share a reflection on the scripture each week in a conversational style. After my talk there is some space for other members of the community to share their engagement with the scripture. We celebrate communion each week. So why did we launch simple church? 1. To create a simple and meaningful opportunity for spiritual community outside of Sunday morning at 10 a.m. worship in order to reach new people in our neighborhood. 2. To offer our congregation an alternative worship experience in case your schedule prevents you from worshiping on Sunday mornings because of kids birthday parties, soccer, time with the grandkids, or any other number of life priorities. 3. Because we believe our congregation is more vital and more vibrant when we offer different ways to encounter God s grace in Jesus Christ and grow in the bonds of Christian love. If you ve never come to simple church before, make it part of your Lenten practice. It may not be your thing but it could be for your neighbor, co-worker, child or friend who, for whatever reason, do not come to sanctuary worship. simple church: Sundays, 5 p.m. in the Chapel simple church Easter Vigil: Join us for an ancient liturgy (worship) service of light, word and table (communion), where we remember God s life-giving acts from the passage from slavery to freedom, from sin to salvation, from death into new life. The service will begin in the courtyard with a procession of light moving into our chapel.
