The Wolf s howl November 22, 2013 FROM THE PRINCIPAL S PEN... Mr. Wrigley (of gum fame) had an unusual theory of advertising. Irritate em! They will soon forget the irritation, but they will remember the product. In Psalm 136, we may sometimes be annoyed by its repetition: Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. Give thanks to the God of gods. Give thanks to the Lord of lords, To Him who alone does great wonders, Who by His understanding made the heavens, His love endures forever Who spread out the earth upon the waters, Who made the great light, His love endures forever When I was a child, all twenty six verses of this Psalm were read in church. From a child s perspective, I almost wanted to scream out and say, I know, His love endures forever! Let s move on to the next point! But there is no next point. God s steadfast love encompasses our relationship with Him from start to finish. The word the New International Version translates as love is translated in other versions as mercy. Mercy refers to a particular type of love, the love relationship God had promised His people in His covenant with Abraham. The covenant found its fulfillment in Jesus. He is the One who makes salvation happen. Everything we need, we find in Him and in His cross. Were it not for the cross, none of the mighty acts of God listed in Psalm 136 would matter. But through the cross, we see these blessings as the Lord s down payment that He would keep His best and greatest covenant promise. As you prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving this coming week, read through Psalm 136 and see if you can add any verses.
