THE ELEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST WELCOME TO WORSHIP AT GRACE OF GOD August 20, 2017 9:00 am GATHERING WELCOME CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS God of abundant life, we come before you as hurting and hurtful people in a troubled world. Lord, have mercy. We come in need of your grace, longing for the healing and wholeness only you can give. Christ, have mercy. We come as beggars, desperate to receive your word of forgiveness and hope for ourselves and our world. Lord, have mercy. We come along with our fellow beggars. We may have come hesitantly or openly, faithfully or skeptically, nervously or eagerly, but we are here. Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David. Amen. (Silence for personal confession and self-examination) Almighty God, we are bold to come before you and ask for your forgiveness. We have sinned against you and against others in our thoughts, words, and actions. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, we ask for your forgiveness. Restore us, we pray, and renew your love within us. God's love is great. In the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, our sin is removed from us as far as the east is from the west. In His name and at His command I announce the forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 1

PROCESSIONAL HYMN Rise, Shine, You People GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. HYMN OF PRAISE 2

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. God al all peoples, your arms reach out to embrace all those who call upon you. Teach us as disciples of your Son to love the world with compassion, that your name may be known throughout the earth, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen SERVICE OF THE WORD FIRST READING Isaiah 56:1, 6-8 1 Thus says the LORD: Maintain justice, and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed. 6 And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be his servants, all who keep the sabbath, and do not profane it, and hold fast my covenant SECOND READING Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32 [Paul writes:] 1 I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. 2a God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. 29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. 30 Just as you were once disobedient to God 7 these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. 8 Thus says the Lord GOD, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, I will gather others to them besides those already gathered. but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, 31 so they have now been disobedient in order that, by the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. 32 For God has imprisoned all in disobedience so that he may be merciful to all. 3

ALLELUIA VERSE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 14:21-28 The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 14 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. 21 Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon. 23 But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us. 24 He answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 25 But she The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. CHILDREN S MESSAGE HYMN OF THE DAY In Christ There is No East or West came and knelt before him, saying, Lord, help me. 26 He answered, It is not fair to take the children s food and throw it to the dogs. 27 She said, Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters table. 28 Then Jesus answered her, Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish. And her daughter was healed instantly. 4

SERMON APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen PRAYERS (after each petition:) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. SHARING OF THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. OFFERING OFFERTORY PRAYER Merciful God, you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen. SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you through our Savior Jesus Christ; He overcame death by his resurrection and opened up for us the way to eternal life with you. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 5

SANCTUS ( Holy, holy, holy ) WORDS OF INSTITUTION For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. All sing: To you, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory in your holy church, now and forever. All sing: LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen 6

AGNUS DEI ( Lamb of God ) COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION Scripture says, Whenever we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26. Martin Luther s Small Catechism says, Holy Communion is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ Himself for us Christians to eat and drink. All baptized Christians who have been instructed in this confession of faith and who share our belief in the real presence of Christ in the sacrament for the forgiveness of sins are invited to the Lord s Table today. Children who have not received their first communion are invited to come to the table and receive a blessing. As you approach the table down the aisles, receive an empty cup from the cart. Proceed to the left or the right and gather around the altar. After each gathered group has communed, they are dismissed in peace. As you return to your seat down the side aisles, place your cup in the racks on the tables to your left or right. Non-alcoholic wine is offered in pre-filled cups for those who cannot drink alcohol. These cups are marked in the rack. Gluten-free (and dairy-free and nut-free) wafers are offered in the small white bowl on the communion cart for those who prefer this option. 7

SONGS DURING COMMUNION Come to the Table Here, Master, in this Quiet Place Come to the Table (repeat) 8

SENDING DISMISSAL The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen and keep us in his grace. Amen PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Jesus Christ, host of this meal, you have given us not only this bread and cup, but your very self, that we may feast on your great love. Filled again by these signs of your grace, may we hunger for your reign of justice, may we thirst for your way of peace, for you are Lord forevermore. Amen BLESSING The Lord bless you and keep The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen Go in peace. Christ lives in you. Thanks be to God. CLOSING SONG My Faith Looks Up to Thee 9
