LENT 2 1123 Marsh Street Mankato, MN 56001 / (507)345-4966 church@mtolivelutheran.org Pastors John J. Petersen & Luke Ulrich / Principal Larry Rude Welcome! In the name of our risen Savior we welcome you to Mt. Olive and thank you for worshipping with us. If you are a guest, please fill out a Guest Card (found in front of you in the hymnbook rack) or sign our guest book in the entry. We invite you to come and worship with us again soon. Large Print copies of the order of service from the ELS Hymnary are available from the usher stand in the back of the sanctuary. For the Hearing Impaired: Our facility is equipped with a hearing assistance system. Please ask an usher for a receiver. Explanation of the Week: Jacob wrestled with God; he would not let Him go until he received a blessing from Him. (Gen 32:22-32) So it was with the Canaanite woman. Though Jesus seemed to ignore and reject her, yet she continued to call upon His name and look to Him for help. (Mt 15:21-28) Even when the Lord called her a little dog, she held on to Him in faith and would not let Him wriggle out of His words: "Yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters' table." This Gentile woman shows herself to be a true Israelite, who struggles with God and man in Christ and prevails. "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire." This is the sanctifying will of God, (1 Thess 4:1-7) to test your faith in order that it may be refined and strengthened. For tribulation produces perseverance; perseverance, character; character, hope. And hope in Christ does not disappoint. (Rom 5:1-5).

Order of Service, Matins (p. 109) ~Prelude ~Hymn 256 When Afflictions Sore Oppress You Youth Choir: vv. 1, 2; Youth Choir/Congregation vv. 3, 4; Youth Choir: v.5 ~Confession of Sin (p. 109) P: Dearly beloved! We have come together in the presence of God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at His hand, to set forth His most worthy praise, to hear His holy Word, and to ask for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and salvation. O come, let us worship Him! Let us kneel and bow down before Him. Let us confess our sins with penitent hearts, and obtain forgiveness by His infinite grace and mercy. C: Almighty and most merciful Father, we have strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. We have followed the devices and desires of our hearts. We have offended against Your holy law. We have done those things which we should not have done, and we have not done those things which we should have done. Have mercy on us, O Lord! Spare us and restore us, according to the promises You have declared to us in Jesus Christ, our Lord. For His sake grant that we may live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of Your holy name. P: The almighty and merciful Lord has granted us pardon and forgiveness of all our sins, grace for true repentance and amendment of life, and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen. ~Versicles (pp. 109-110) P: O Lord, open my lips. C: And my mouth shall show forth Your praise. P: Make haste, O God, to deliver me. C: Make haste to help me, O Lord. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be; forevermore. Amen. 3

~Youth Choir The Lord's My Light (portions of Psalm 27) by Henry Ruthven The Lord's my light and saving health, who shall make me dismayed? The Lord is the strength of my life of whom then shall I be afraid? One thing I of the Lord desired, and will seek to obtain, that all the days of my life I may within God's house remain. And now ev'n at this present time, mine head shall lifted be, Above all those that are my foes and round encompass me: Therefore unto his tabernacle I'll sacrifices bring, Of joyfulness I'll sing, yea, I to God will praises sing. ~Hymn 257 vv. 1-2 When in the Hour of Utmost Need ~Old Testament Reading Genesis 32:22-32 He got up that night and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok. He took them and sent them across the stream, and he also sent his possessions across. Jacob was left alone, and he wrestled with a man there until daybreak. When the man saw that he could not defeat him, he touched the socket of his thigh, and the socket of Jacob s thigh was dislocated as he wrestled. The man said, Let me go. It s daybreak. Jacob said, I will not let you go, unless you bless me. Then he said to him, What is your name? He said, Jacob. Then he said, Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have fought with God and with men, and you have won. Jacob asked him, Please tell me your name. He said, Why do you ask what my name is? Then he blessed him there. Jacob named the place Peniel, because he said, I have seen God face to face, and my life has been spared. The sun rose as he crossed over at Peniel, and he was limping because of his thigh. For that reason, to this day the people of Israel do not eat the tendon of the hip that is on the socket of the thigh, because God touched the socket of Jacob s thigh on the tendon of the hip. ~Hymn 257 vv. 3-4 To Thee May Raise Our Hearts and Eyes ~Epistle Lesson 1 Thessalonians 4:1-7 Therefore, beyond this, brothers, just as you received instruction from us about how you are to walk so as to please God (as indeed you are doing), we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus that you do so even more. To be sure, you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. Indeed, this is God s will: that you be sanctified, namely, that you keep yourselves away from sexual immorality. He wants each of you to learn to obtain a wife for yourself in a way that is holy and 4

honorable, not in lustful passion like the heathen, who do not know God. No one is to overstep and take advantage of his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, just as we said previously and solemnly testified to it. For God did not call us for uncleanness, but in sanctification. ~Apostles Creed (pp. 68-69) P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. ~Hymn 255 Lord, Hear the Voice of My Complaint ~Gospel Lesson & Sermon Text Matthew 15:21-28 Jesus left that place and withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon. There a Canaanite woman from that territory came and kept crying out, Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! A demon is severely tormenting my daughter! But he did not answer her a word. His disciples came and pleaded, Send her away, because she keeps crying out after us. He answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. But she came and knelt in front of him, saying, Lord, help me. He answered her, It is not good to take the children s bread and throw it to their little dogs. Yes, Lord, she said, yet their little dogs also eat the crumbs that fall from their masters table. Then Jesus answered her, Woman, your faith is great! It will be done for you, just as you desire. And her daughter was healed at that very hour. ~Sermon Theme A Spiritual Wrestling Match With the Lord ~Offering & Hymn 257 vv. 5-7 And Thus We Come, O God, Today The members of Mt. Olive give offerings as a joyful response to what God has given them. These offerings support the work of Gospel ministry in our community and around the world. offering. We ask you to fill out a Welcome Card and place that in the offering plate. ~Kyrie (pp. 116-117) C: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. ~Lord s Prayer (p. 117) C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. ~Prayers ~Collect (p. 118, form I) P: Let us pray: O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, having safely brought us to the beginning of this day, defend us in the same with Your mighty power and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger, but that all our doing, being ordered by Your governance, may be righteous in Your sight; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. C: Amen. ~Benedicamus (p. 119) P: Let us bless the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. ~Benediction (p. 119) P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
