T H E A R A B L E S O F L E N T R E E I V E T H E W O R D THE ARABLE of the SOWER and the SEED Week One Midweek Service February 25, 2015

Ebenezer Lutheran hurch ort Hudson The Lutheran hurch Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri arsonage 573-459-6432 hurch 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, astor Mary Sprick, Secretary Laura Nichols, Organist Morning Jennifer Huellinghoff, Organist Evening Kathy Scheer, hoir Director ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com AS WE GATHER: Welcome to Week One in The arables of Lent series of services, which is based on the parable of the sower and the seed. In this parable, the seed that falls on fertile soil takes root and grows, while seeds in other soils fail. The service includes readings from Scripture, a children s sermon, a sermon and thematic hymns that help us to remember that when we are open to receiving the Word, the Word of hrist flourishes within us. HYMN Jesus Lead Thou On LW 386 Jesus, lead Thou on Till our rest is won; And although the way be cheerless, We will follow calm and fearless. Guide us by Thy hand To our fatherland. If the way be drear, If the foe be near, Let not faithless fears o'ertake us; Let not faith and hope forsake us; For through many a woe To our home we go. 2

When we seek relief From a long-felt grief, When temptations come alluring, Make us patient and enduring. Show us that bright shore Where we weep no more. Jesus, lead Thou on Till our rest is won. Heav'nly leader, still direct us, Still support, console, protect us, Till we safely stand In our fatherland. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen In this holy season the Son of God humbles himself so that we receive mercy. Humble me once again, O God, that my life would be pleasing and acceptable to you. In this holy season the Son of God spreads the seed of his Word over our hearts. Make our hearts the good soil, O God, that receives your Word and produces fruit that lasts. In this holy season the Son of God enters into his assion and death so that we are exalted. Grant me your grace, O God, that my faith in Jesus would be pleasing and acceptable to you. 3

HYMN Lasset Uns Mit Jesu Ziehen 87 87 877 877 LW 381 Let us listen to our Savior as his parables unfold, Learning what he has to teach us, bearing fruit a hundredfold. May the vast world s cares and pleasures, Doubts and lies from Satan heard, Never turn us from the Word. As this seed is sown among us, May our ears and hearts be found to be fresh and fruitful ground. onfession and Absolution Our hearts are not always fertile ground for the planting of the Word of God. Let us confess the sins of our hearts and lives to our Lord who hears and forgives: Most merciful God, we confess that our very nature is sinful. Our hearts are too often the path where Satan comes and snatches away what has been sown. Our hearts are too often the rocky ground where trial and difficulty make us fall away. Our hearts are too often the thorns that choke God s Word and keep it from being fruitful. Our hearts are sinful and selfish, pushing away the grace of God and growing only sin and deceit. It is proven in our wicked thoughts, words and deeds. Forgive us, most holy God. The Lord Jesus came into this world with a heart that 4

was perfect soil. He never sinned and always adhered to the Word of his Heavenly Father. His perfect life, crushing crucifixion and glorious resurrection mean complete forgiveness for the sins of our hearts and lives. Because his heart and life were perfect soil for us, all of your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. HYMN On My Heart Imprint Thine Image LW 100 On my heart imprint your image, blessed Jesus, King of grace, That life s riches, cares and pleasures never may your work erase; Let the clear inscription be: Jesus, crucified for me, Is my life, my hope s foundation, and my glory and salvation! rayer of the Day Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 7:1-7 Epistle Reading olossians 1:3-14 Gospel Reading Matthew 13:1-8, 18-23 SERMON HYMN Sung to Southwell SM LW 99 We listen as the Word like scattered seed is sown, For as each parable is heard hrist s kingdom is made known. On soil of every kind 5

the precious seed we sow That in good soil the Word might find a place to thrive and grow. In ev ry time of need, before the judgment throne, Your work, O Lamb of God, I ll plead, your merits, not my own. The Apostles reed Sermon Offering rayers Each petition ends with the following response: Sower of the seeds, make your Word take root and grow. Lord s rayer Benediction LOSING HYMN Almighty God, Your Word is ast LW 342 Almighty God, your Word is cast 6

like seed into the ground; Now let the dew of heav n descend and righteous fruits abound. Let not the sly satanic foe this holy seed remove, But give it root in ev ry heart to bring forth fruits of love. Let not the world s deceitful cares the rising plant destroy, But let it yield a hundredfold the fruits of peace and joy. So when the precious seed is sown, life-giving grace bestow That all whose souls the truth receive its saving pow r may know.
