04-09-2017 PARISH LIFE Page 3 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Second Reading Gospel Reading Isaiah 50:4-7 Philippians 2:6-11 Matthew 27:11-54 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, A Message from Father Don Today s Gospel is a reading of the passion (or suffering) of Christ and this year we are reading it according to Matthew. We see Jesus betrayed by two of his friends, Judas and Peter, and by the crowd. We see him mocked and beaten by the soldiers who laughingly honor him as King of the Jews. Wounded, crowned with thorns, and dying a little more each step of the way, Jesus carries his cross to Calvary. His suffering is so great that he wonders if even God has left him to die alone. Still Jesus willingly gives up his spirit. With the centurion we pray: Clearly, this was the Son of God! Jesus offered his entire life and his entire self to the Father, including his suffering and death. He did this voluntarily. Even though he was God, he chose the lowest place out of love. We, like Jesus, suffer because we are human. People still suffer, here in our own country and around the world. If you read the newspaper or listen to the news, you know how true this statement is. This week spend some quiet time reflecting on some of the ways and some of the reasons why people suffer today. Determine how you, in the name of Jesus, can lessen human suffering in some way. A good starting point is through prayer. Ask God to help you to be more welcoming towards everyone you meet and to share His peace with one another as you begin this holy week. DOMINGO DE RAMOS DE LA PASIÓN DEL SEÑOR Queridos Hernanos en Cristo, Un Mensaje del Padre Don En el evangelio de hoy nos habla sobre la pasión (o sufrimiento) de Cristo y este año lo estamos leyendo "según Mateo". Vemos a Jesús, traicionado por dos de sus amigos, Judas y Pedro y por la multitud. Lo vemos burlado y golpeado por los soldados que entre risas lo "honran" como rey de los judíos. Herido, coronado de espinas y muriendo un poco más cada paso del camino, Jesús lleva su cruz al Calvario. Su sufrimiento es tan grande que se pregunta si Dios le ha dejado morir solo. Todavía Jesús voluntariamente abandona su espíritu. Con el centurión oramos "Claramente, que éste era el hijo de Dios!" Jesús ofreció toda su vida y todo su ser con el padre, incluyendo su sufrimiento y muerte. Lo hizo voluntariamente, aunque él era Dios, él escogió "el lugar más bajo" por el amor. Nosotros también sufrimos como Jesús, porque somos humanos. Personas que todavía sufren, aquí en nuestro país y alrededor del mundo. Si lees el periódico o escuchas las noticias, sabrás qué tan cierto es esta afirmación. Esta semana pasa un tiempo tranquilo reflexionando sobre alguna de las formas y alguna de las razones por qué las personas sufren hoy en día. Determina cómo, en nombre de Jesús, puedes de algún modo disminuir el sufrimiento humano. Un buen punto de partida es a través de la oración. Pídele a Dios que te ayude esta semana a ser más acogedor con todas las personas que conozcas y para compartir tu paz uno con otros al comenzar esta semana Santa. Que Dios los bendiga!!!
