Chapter 1 New Moon in Cancer The new moon is a time for reawakening areas of our lives that need a boost. It s also a time for going inward, nurturing our spirit and our hearts in order to create the support we need to move forward. When this moon is in the watery, moon ruled sign of Cancer, this need becomes especially important for many of us.
About the New Moon in Cancer Cancer is a water sign, ruled by the moon. The new moon is a time for looking within and often addressing issues related to emotions and our inner thoughts and feelings. It s a time for not only starting new things, a time for new beginnings, but also a time to reevaluate those things that we have been working at for some time and finding places were we can add to what we re already working on. There can be some confusion about the new moon phase and the phase known as the dark moon. Astronomically speaking the new moon occurs when the moon and sun share a longitude point and the moon is not visible from earth. However this phase has come to be known as the dark moon since the moon is, well, dark. In lunar calendars the original meaning of a new moon was when the first crescent was seen after a period of the dark moon. Today in magickal and metaphysical practice these two phase are either very defined as two separate events or they are seen as one in the same. I have personally found that seeing the new moon as its own phase, individual and separate from the dark moon, is best. The trick then becomes either following the astronomical information, something that is easier and easier to do all the time with the information available on the Internet, or you need to be particularly keen at spotting events in the sky. I see the new moon as occurring when there is a sliver of light in the sky, however the tone and feel of the dark moon is still there. The moon is still mostly invisible to us so the work of going within, working on things within ourselves and dealing with things from an introspective point of view is still a very relevant practice. The advantage is that it s also a time to acknowledge new beginnings and to use that time of going inward for making changes and start things fresh. Mothers and Family One of the strongest areas that are impacted during the New Moon in Cancer / 2
new moon in Cancer are those of mother and family. You may find that issues with your own mother or those who are in mother roles in your life are strong right now. You may feel yourself being sucked into family drama or issues and not knowing why. Be sure to do a selfcheck to make sure emotions that you are feeling and experiencing are truly your own and not things that you re picking up from other people around you. Those who are particularly empathic need to be especially careful of this during the new moon in Cancer. One of the things that this moon time can be especially helpful for is finding areas that need to be healed from the past in relation to family and mother relationships and beginning the steps toward release, even if we are at a point where these people are no longer in our lives. Part 2 Recipes Incense and Oils for Magick Below are a few recipes for incenses and oils that can be used for magick when working with the new moon in cancer Oils These oils can be worn as ritual perfume, used for ritual anointing, and for dressing candles, tools, and spell items used during new moon in cancer magick. You can also an 6-8 drops of the final blends to a small spray bottle filled with spring water to use for ritually cleansing and charging your space for magick. Moon Magick Oil 1 tsp Lavender 1 tsp Sandalwood 1/4 tsp Jasmine blend in a base oil of either sweet almond or jojoba (about 3 tbsp) Cancer Oil 2 tsp Sandalwood 1 tsp Jasmine 1 tsp Rose a few drops of lemon blend in a base oil of jojoba (about 3 tbsp) Once you have these two different oils made you can blend a few drops of each to create an oil especially for working with the Cancer Moon. You can add a few drops of patchouli or mugwort to specifically work with the energies of the new moon. Incense Cancer Moon Magick Incense New Moon in Cancer / 6
equal parts of: Frankincense (crushed) Myrrh (crushed) Sandalwood powder Jasmine flowers Mugwort a few drops each of: Patchouli oil Rose oil Lemon oil Mix together the dry ingredients first. Add the oils a few drops at a time and stir together well. Let the incense dry completely before burning. Burn these incense blends on charcoal or scatter around your ritual space to add to your magick and to send your prayers skyward. New Moon in Cancer / 7
Chapter 2 New Moon Meditation The meditation that follows is designed to help you uncover a deeply held concern related to family in order to bring it forward for healing, resolve, and release. This can be related to your family of origin or a family of choice.
Introduction In this meditation we re going to be honoring the New Moon in the sign of Cancer. The sign of Cancer calls us to examine family, home life, and relationships within our families, whether that be a family of origin, family of choice, or family of spirit. Being that this is the new moon this beings us deeper, more inward, asking us to look within for emotions or issues that we may not be dealing with directly when it comes to family and giving us an opportunity to being deep healing on those important roots in our lives. In this meditation you will be given an opportunity to find one of these deeply hidden roots that need healing and a Guide will come to you to help you being the process. This Guide could be one that you already work with, it could be an Ancestor, or it could be a new spirit that you haven t encountered before. Allow yourself to be open to whatever energies need to come forward for you in this moment and trust and the Divine is guiding your experience. comfortable place to sit, with your feet on the floor, where you will be undisturbed for the next 20-30 minutes. You may lie down to do this if that is what you find most comfortable, however some people find that they will drift off or fall asleep when in this position. While that isn t harmful to you in any way while in a meditation like this, you will likely find you don t remember anything that happened. Healing will still take place, but you will likely not be able to recall the experience. If you wish to play soft music or use candles or incense to enhance your meditation, you can light them now. Meditation New Moon in Cancer Meditation A Guided Meditation Being by closing your eyes. Take a few deep, cleansing breaths. Breath in deeply through the nose for the count of four, hold the breath for the count of four, and then push the air out through your nose for the court of four. Do this three or four times. Begin to let your breathing find a natural rhythm. This may be deeper and slower than normal or it may not seem different at all. Just breathe. Begin to rock your hips side to side and back and forth. Allow your sitting bones to find their most natural resting place for you. Sit tall. Feel your head gently and softly resting on the top of your spine. Let your chest rise up and lift so you feel open, light, and bright. Allow these movements to be natural. Let your body guide you. Keep breathing. Once you are comfortable take a few more deep breaths. In through the nose for four, hold for four, and push out through the nose for four. Now imagine that, with your eyes closed, there is a movie screen in front of you. You look at screen and it is bright and white. On this screen you see the following numbers and colors projected. With each one you feel more relaxed, entering an alpha state. As each color and number appears let them transition naturally. You see the color red and the number 7. You see the color orange and then number 6. You see the color yellow and the number 5. You see the color green and the number 4. You see the color blue and the number 3. You see the color indigo and the number 2. You see the color orchid and the number 1. As the orchid fades to white the screen disappears and you find yourself in a dark space feeling completely relaxed. Before you a faint outline of a door appears. You walk toward it and grasp the knob and open the door. Before you is a series of stone steps going down. As you walk down you count the steps to yourself, which go from 10 to 1. 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 You step off the last step onto the beginnings of a dirt path. As you look up you see it is nighttime and the moon is dark as it s a night of the new moon. You strain to see if you can find the first most faint sliver of her. Can you find her in the sky above you? As you search for the moon s outline, what starts and New Moon Meditation / 11
constellations seem to stand out? Can you find anything specific in the sky above you? (pause to observe the skies) Suddenly you attention is drawn back down to the earth as you feel a warm breeze kick up around you. The smell of jasmine flowers and what can only be called the scent of summer fill your nose. As you look down the dirt path you see a distant shimmer of what appears to be water. You begin to walk down the path toward the shimmer. As you walk you stop along the way to look at what plants and flowers and trees are growing along the path. What do you recognize? (pause to observe your surroundings) A particular patch of herbs and flowers draws your attention and you decide to pick some you have a feeling you may need them. What do you find yourself reaching down for? After you pick your herbs and flowers you say a thank you to the earth and continue you. A moment or two later you find yourself coming upon a small pond surrounded by heavy trees. Across the pond stretches a plank walkway. As you consider whether you should walk across it, a figure appears from the trees and steps up to the walkway. The figure can sense your confusion and tells you that they are your Guide for this journey. Who is it? Do you recognize them? What are they wearing? Are they carrying anything with them? (pause to connect with your Guide) You can ask your Guide their name if they haven t given it to you already. Your Guide may not speak at all. This is fine. Simply feel what they have to say and let their wisdom come intuitively. Your Guide explains that the pond beneath the walkway is a pool of the past. It holds memories and images that you hold deep within and which you may not know are still within you. New Moon Meditation / 12
Your Guide explains that as you walk together across the planks you will have an opportunity to stop and look deep within this pool of water and see what you need to bring to the surface. Your Guide motions for you to step onto the walkway and begin walking. As you do your Guide is right behind you to support you along the way. You begin taking slow, determined steps and as you do you look down to the water next to you. You move ahead a few steps and feel as though you ve been planted in place. You know this is where you need to stop and watch the water. You look down and observe a scene from the past begin to play over for you. Take your time and watch the scene. Allow whatever feelings and emotions you have connected to it come up naturally. (pause to watch these memories resurface) When the scene sinks back down into the water continue walking forward. Other things may appear in the water as well. Unless something stops you, or unless your Guides asks you to stop, you keep walking toward the other side of the pond, letting these other images just serve as reminders for you. When you reach the other side your Guide leads you past a few trees to a small campfire. Next to the fire are two tree stumps, perfect to rest your weary bones which are now carrying a lot of energy and emotion. You and your Guide sit next to each other quietly, looking into the fire. Your Guide motions to the flowers and herbs that you re still holding and asks if you are ready to being to let go and heal. If you are, make an offering to the fire. Do you offer everything? Do you offering just a little? Make your offering and take a moment to feel how it s received. (pause to make an offering to the fire) When you turn back to look at your Guide you notice they are holding their hands up in a cupped formation New Moon Meditation / 13
in front of their heart. Your Guide closes their eyes and slowly a large, glowing bubble appears in their hands. Your Guide hands this bubble to you and says that it s time for you to place all your feelings about what you saw in the bubble. Sadness, guilt, anger, frustration, loss all the emotions that came up and weighted you down from seeing that scene again bring them up and place them in the bubble. You simply hold the bubble, close your eyes, and as you feel these emotions you sense them as people, places, things, colors, textures whatever makes them real for you and you begin to place them energetically inside the bubble until it s so full it feels like it could burst. (pause to place all your feelings and emotions inside this bubble) Your Guide motions for you to stand. As you stand together before the fire and you hold your bubble full of emotions, your Guide shares some insight into what you re feeling. Listen to what your Guide has to say and take this time to ask any specific questions about the situation or how to heal as you go forward. (pause to connect with your Guide) After your talk your Guide tells you it s time to release your bubble of emotions. However, remember that the act of letting go and destroying the bubble is only a symbolic act. Your Guide reminds you that to truly heal and let go, you must walk away and never look back. When you re ready to do this, throw your bubble into the fire. Your bubble explodes and you feel your energy shift. Take a moment to feel this release. (pause to feel how this release has changed you) Your Guide then motions for you to head away from the fire back the way you came, but again your Guide reminds you not to look back. Once you reach the walkway across the pond your Guide walks ahead of you to guide you back to the New Moon Meditation / 14
other side. Does the water below seem different? Is it calmer? Does it seem the same? Does anything come up to the surface again? (pause to make this journey across the pond) You get to the other side and it s time to say goodbye to your Guide. Your Guide reminds you that if you need healing or help with this again to call on them and they will come. Before you leave your Guide holds out their hand and gives you a gift to connect you two together for the future. Accept this gift with gratitude. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 You close the door behind you and you re in a dark space once again and you begin to feel yourself coming back to the room you re body is in. You take a few deep breaths, wiggle your fingers and toes and then count up from 1 to 7. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 You open your eyes and return fully to your body and the here and how. (pause to accept the gift from your Guide and say thanks) You then make your way back down the path you took to get here. Observe anything that along the way that speaks to you. You come back to where you started and find the door that brought you here waiting for you. You open the door and find 10 stone steps ascending upward. As you walk up you count each step and being to return to the here and now. New Moon Meditation / 15
Self-Care After Your Meditation Following the meditation... Once you have done your meditation take a little time to absorb the information and experience you have had. You may want to journal about them so that you don t forget anything important. Make note of things like the symbols and items like your herbs, flowers, constellations, and the gift from your Guide. You may wish to do some divination to get more insight into what to do next. If the people or persons are not those who you wish to connect with in the here and now to resolve issues with, consider writing a letter to each person individually and ritually burning them as an offering to release your thoughts, feelings, connections, and emotions to those people and situations that came up in your meditation. Make time for some self-care and allow yourself to spend some time doing things that fill you with love, joy, and peace.
