JULY I AUGUST 2005-SIVAN/TAMMUZ/AV 5765-PUBLISHED BI-MONTHLY-VOL. #5 ISSUE #4 - SPRINGFIELD, OH Tish" B'Av Tisha B'Av, which means the 9th of the month of Av, is a fast day. This year it falls on Sunday, August 14 (Saturday at sunset until Sunday at sunset). The Ninth of Av commemorates and mourns the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE, and of the Second Temple in 70 CE, along with other tragedies throughout Jewish history. It is an appropriate day to contemplate the meaning of approximately 2,000 years of exile, diaspora, and powerlessness, and the utter wonderment and miracle of our return to Israel in modern times. WORSH" COU'ITEE PLANS DINNER A dinner following the 6 p.m. service on Friday, August 5, is being planned at Linardos Villa Restaurant, 2230 East Main Street, Springfield. Members who plan to attend should contact Maxine Leventhal at 399-7669 before that date. This will be a nice social get-together for OUI: Temple members. Each person may order from the menu and pay accordingly. RABBI'S MESSAGE Dear Congregants, Many of us will be traveling this summer. Every act is an opportunity to bring the sacred into our lives. On your travels, you might entertain the idea of visiting a local synagogue.if you will be in an area with a large Jewish population, you might want to check out a Judaica shop or Jewish bookstore. Here are two relevant prayers from asiddurpublished by Congregation Dorshei Emet the Reconstructionist Synagogue of Montreal (HadeshYameinu, Renew Our Days. ed. Rabbi Ronald Aigen): As we set out on our jour- ' ney,may it be your will, 0 ; Everpresent God, that we be guided on the paths of well-being and protected from all harm and evil on the way. Bless the work I' of our hands and grant I ' us grace, lovingkindness and compassion in your I, eyes and in the eyes of all who see us. Blessed are II you, 0 Everpresent, who I! hearkens to prayer. I:' - Talmud, Berakhot 29b I : I, TraveLIer:r 'YrtIJtr A prayer for the journey We could say it every day When we first leave the soft warmth of our beds And don't know for sure if we'll return at night When we get in the trains, planes & automobiles And put our lives in the hands of many strangers. Or when we leave our homes for a day, a week, a month ormore- Will we return to a peaceful home? Untouched by fire, flood, or crime? How will our travels change us? What gives us the courage to go through that door? A prayer for the journey. For the journey we take in this fragile vessel of flesh. A finite number of years and we will reach The unknown, where it all began. Every life, every day, every hour is a journey. In the travel is the discovery, The wisdom, the joy. Every life, every day, every hour is a journey. In the travel is the reward, The peace, the blessing. -Sheila Peltz Weinberg Blessed journeys to you alt whether or not you are leaving town. - Rabbi Janice Garfunkel
