University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ. Dissertation director Amy Williamsen. August 2012. My dissertation, Production of Meaning: Spectacle as Visual Rhetoric in the Auto Sacramental, investigates the sociopolitical significance of autos sacramentales within the context of the Counter Reformation in Spain and Latin America during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The study uses insights from contemporary literary theory to demonstrate how the plays used these symbols and signs that its audience members readily recognized to reinforce national values and Catholic doctrine in the wake of the Protestant Reformation.
