EASTER SUNDAY 2018 THE CHURCH OF SAINT ANN THE CITY OF WASHINGTON

My dear Parishioners and Friends, This past week, the Church invited us once again to enter into the powerful mysteries of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of our divine Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The days of Holy Week are designed to intensify our faith in the power of the love of God s only Son who in the flesh took on the struggle against the power of Satan and evil, suffers under their apparent spell, and then victoriously conquers them through His resurrection from the dead. For the next fifty days we celebrate an Easter Season of the victory of life over sin and death. As we renew our baptismal promises today and throughout this holy Season, we enter into His pledge to us of our own bodily resurrection, since it was through Water and the Holy Spirit in Baptism that we became adopted children of the Eternal Father and members of His visible and mystical Body on earth, the Church. During these holy days, we have recalled the incredible drama of the greatest life ever lived the life of Jesus of Nazareth. We heard again the Gospel narrative which tells of the Christ s greatest acts of love for his people: His solemn entrance into Jerusalem amidst the cries of Hosanna on Palm Sunday; His Last Supper with his beloved apostles on Holy Thursday; His trial, suffering, and death on the Cross on Good Friday; and the discovery of the empty tomb and His incredible Resurrection on Easter. What a powerful week of prayer and devotion! We have watched, listened and prayed, and we allowed ourselves to be changed by His grace-filled love at every stage of the unfolding story which culminates not in the Cross of Good Friday but the empty tomb on this glorious day our Divine Savior has made! Through it all, these beautiful and powerful liturgies have communicated above all else the very life and love of the Lord Jesus who is always present, most especially in His sacramental Body and Blood of the Holy Eucharist perpetually and mysteriously re-presented before our eyes of faith every time the Sacrifice of the Mass is offered. 1

So, despite the woes and sorrows of our own lives and those of this world, it is our certain faith that the risen Lord is always victorious over sin and death and the powers of Satan and evil, and He invites us to share in His saving remedy of healing and forgiveness with the hope of resurrection with all our sins remitted. Having endured our suffering perfectly for us all and for all time, he has conquered the powers of death forever. He is risen from the dead! He is truly risen! A blessed and happy Easter, everyone! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Sincerely yours in the Risen Christ, Rev. Msgr. James D. Watkins, S.T.L., Ph.D. Pastor Out of courtesy and respect, kindly turn off all cell phones and other electronic devices. Thank you. In your generosity, please make a sacrificial offering at the time of the Collection, or go on-line to WWW.FAITHDIRECT.NET and download the free app and use our church code: DC811. INTRODUCTORY RITES GREETING ACT OF PENITENCE Kyrie Mass in G d167 (Choir at the 11:00am Mass) HYMN OF PRAISE (at 9:00am Mass) Gloria Mass for the Angels and Saints by Steven R. Janco Franz Schubert (1797-1828) HYMN OF PRAISE (Choir at the 11:00am Mass) Gloria Mass in G d167 Franz Schubert (1797-1828) LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING Acts 10: 34a, 37-46 A reading from the Acts of the Apostles Peter proceeded to speak and said: You know what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. 4

This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name. The Word of the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 118: 1-2, 16-17, 22-23 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. Let the house of Israel say, His mercy endures forever. R/. The right hand of the Lord has struck with power; the right hand of the Lord is Exalted. I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. R/. The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. By the Lord has this been done; it is wonderful in our eyes. R/. SECOND READING Colossians 3: 4 A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians Brothers and sisters: If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. The Word of the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God. 5

ACCLAMATION BEFORE THE GOSPEL Mass of the Angels and Saints by Steven R. Janco Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed; let us then feast with joy in the Lord. GOSPEL John 20: 1-9 The Lord be with you. A reading from the holy Gospel according to John R/. And with your spirit. R/. Glory to you, O Lord. On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don t know where they put him. So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first: he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead. The Gospel of the Lord. R/. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. HOMILY MONSIGNOR JAMES D. WATKINS 6

RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL PROMISES Dear brothers and sisters, through the Paschal Mystery we have been buried with Christ in Baptism, so that we may walk with him in newness of life. And so, now that our Lenten observance is concluded, let us renew the promises of Holy Baptism, by which we once renounced Satan and his works, and promised to serve God in his holy Catholic Church. And so I ask you: Do you renounce Satan? And all his works? And all his empty show? Do you renounce sin, so as to live in the freedom of the children of God? Do you renounce the lure of evil, so that sin may have no mastery over you? Do you renounce Satan, the author and prince of sin? Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth? Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord who was born of the Virgin Mary, suffered death and was buried, rose again from the dead and is seated at the right hand of the Father? Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting? And may almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us new birth by water and the Holy Spirit and bestowed on us forgiveness of our sins, keep us by his grace, in Christ Jesus our Lord, for eternal life. AMEN. 7

SPRINKLING OF HOLY WATER Vidi Aquam (Choir at the 11:00am Mass) Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611) I saw water flowing from the right side of the temple, Alleluia: And all to whom this water came were saved, and they shall say: Alleluia! Give praise to the Lord for He is good: because his mercy endures forever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. UNIVERSAL PRAYER R/. Lord, hear our prayer. Guidelines for the Reception of Holy Communion FOR CATHOLICS As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the eucharist when we receive holy communion. We are encouraged to receive communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (CODE OF CANON LAW, CANON 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all. FOR FELLOW CHRISTIANS We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions that separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ s prayer for us that we may all be one (JOHN 17:21). Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the eucharist is a sign of reality of the oneness of faith, life and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to holy communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law (CANON 844 4). Members of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of communion by Christians of these churches (Canon 844 3). FOR THOSE NOT RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION All who are not receiving holy communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another. FOR NON-CHRISTIANS We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to holy communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family.
