During this season of repentance, make it a priority to go to confession. Fr. Nick will be available one hour before the weekday services for confession. If these times do not work for you, please schedule an appointment with him for confession as you would the rest of the year. Our parish will be hosting our deanery for its annual Lenten Mission on Saturday, March 25. Vespers will begin at 4:00 PM followed by a light lenten meal. Please sign up on the sheet downstairs with what for item you will be bringing. Let us work together, as a deanery, to travel towards the Resurrection together! Beginning in February, Fr. Nick will be holding adult catechism classes at the church. Classes will be open to the public. Classes are every Monday at 7:00 PM. Please bring your friends, neighbors and yourselves to learn more about the Orthodox Faith!

On Holy Week Adapted from the bulletin of Saint John's in Hermitage, PA. www.stjohnacroc.org At this midpoint of the Great Fast (Lent), we can see Holy Week and Pascha on the horizon. Our Lenten spiritual preparation helps us enter Holy Week and Pascha with full, conscious, and active participation. The greatest harvest of the fruits of Holy Week and Pascha is received through attending services. Remember that that there will be divine services on Holy Monday at 10 AM & 6:30 PM; Holy Tuesday at 10 AM & 6:30 PM; Holy Wednesday at 10 AM & 6:30 PM; Holy Thursday at 10 AM and 7 PM; Good Friday at 10 AM and 7 PM; Holy Saturday at 10 AM and 8 PM; and on Pascha Sunday at 10:00 AM. Over the next few weeks, look at your schedule. Don t ask yourself What is the least amount of services I need to attend during Holy Week? but ask What is the most I can do to accompany Our Lord to His Passion, Cross, and Tomb? Life presents many demands upon us: work, school, family. Even our physical condition makes demands. Some things are unavoidable: your employment may be less than accommodating; your doctor may have only had one appointment available on the morning of Good Friday; you don t see well at night. But for every valid reason, there are plenty of excuses that are given for lack of participation in Holy Week services. This year, the Orthodox and Western dates of Easter coincide. Our children will be out of school on Thursday and Friday, and sporting events and practices will not be held. (And even if they are held which is more important?) Many places of employment will also be closed, especially on Friday. Yes, we have to clean the house, cook the foods, and welcome our guests. But all of these are secondary to the mystery that unfolds within the services. For those who can t drive at night, don t be shy: if you need a ride just ask! Fr. Nick and your parish family will find a way to get you to church and back home. As Orthodox Christians, we must make every effort to be in church throughout Holy Week, and most especially (but not exclusively) on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Our doors will be open, Our Lord will be waiting come and worship!

To Ponder Do not fall into despair because of stumbling. I do not mean that you should not feel contrition for them, but that you should not think them incurable. For it is more expedient to be bruised than dead. There is, indeed, a Healer for the man who has stumbled, even He Who on the Cross asked that mercy be shown to His crucifiers, He Who pardoned His murders while He hung on the Cross. All manner of sin, He said, and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men, that is, through repentance. St. Isaac the Syrian The compassion of God has no bounds, and blessed is the man who through prudence has come to realize the love of God. For the sake of the earthy, disobedient, insubordinate man, who had become prey to the passions and demons, the Son of God Himself came down and was hanged on the Cross! Alongside this we see our own laziness, coldness, indifference, while God on the other hand shows us His providence and love in many different ways. You need not be despondent. Let those be despondent who do not believe in God. For them sorrow is burdensome, of course, because besides earthly enjoyment they have nothing. But believers must not be despondent, for through sorrows they receive the right of sonship, without which is impossible to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. St. Barsanuphius of Optina Do not despair in any way ignoring God's help, for He can do whatever He wishes. On the contrary, place your hope in Him and He will do one of these things: either through trials and temptations, or in some other way which He alone knows, He will bring about your restoration; or He will accept your patient endurance and humility in the place of works; or because of your hope He will act lovingly towards you in some other way of which you are not aware, and so will save your shackled soul. Only do not abandon your Physician, for otherwise you will suffer senselessly the twofold death because you do not know the hidden ways of God. St. Peter of Damascus
