The Church of Our Saviour Episcopal Parish Founded in 1867 The Seventh Sunday after the Epiphany Sunday, February 19, 2017 at 10:00 am The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two Mass settings: A Communion Service, Series 3 John Rutter Hymn refers to The Hymnal 1982 (Blue Book) The Tower Bell calls the people to worship. [9:50 am] Prelude Chorale Prelude, Dies sind die heiligen zehn Gebot, BWV 678 Music: Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) From Clavierübung, Part III, #10 These are the holy ten Commandments (Hymn: Martin Luther, 1524) The Tower Bells sounds. All stand for the Entrance Hymn [10:00 am] The Word of God The Entrance Hymn 525 Words: Samuel John Stone (1839-1900) Music: Aurelia, Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-76) Welcome The Church s one foundation The people standing, the Celebrant says Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. The Collect for Purity Celebrant and Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Hymn of Praise: Glory to God Gloria in excelsis 2

The Collect of the Day Celebrant Celebrant The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. The Celebrant says the Collect O Lord, you have taught us that without love whatever we do is worth nothing: Send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts your greatest gift, which is love, the true bond of peace and of all virtue, without which whoever lives is accounted dead before you. Grant this for the sake of your only Son Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Lessons The people sit. One or two Lessons, as appointed, are read. The First Lesson Reader A Reading from the Book of Leviticus [19:1-2, 9-18] The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy. When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the LORD your God. You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; and you shall not lie to one another. And you shall not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God: I am the LORD. You shall not defraud your neighbor; you shall not steal; and you shall not keep for yourself the wages of a laborer until morning. You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind; you shall fear your God: I am the LORD. You shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbor. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbor: I am the LORD. You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guilt yourself. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence is kept. 3

The Gradual: Psalm 119:34-40 Legem pone 34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep your law; * I shall keep it with all my heart. 35 Make me go in the path of your commandments, * for that is my desire. Refrain 36 Incline my heart to your decrees * and not to unjust gain. 37 Turn my eyes from watching what is worthless; * give me life in your ways. Refrain 38 Fulfill your promise to your servant, * which you make to those who fear you. 39 Turn away the reproach which I dread, * because your judgments are good. 40 Behold, I long for your commandments; * in your righteousness preserve my life. Refrain Silence is kept. The Second Lesson Reader A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians [3:10-11, 16-23] According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ. Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy that person. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple. Do not deceive yourselves. If you think that you are wise in this age, you should become fools so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He catches the wise in their craftiness, and again, The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile. 4

So let no one boast about human leaders. For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future--all belong to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence is kept. The people stand. The Hymn at the Gospel 500 Words: John Dryden (1631-1700); tr. of Veni Creator Spiritus Music: Surrey, melody Henry Carey (1690?-1743) The Holy Gospel: Matthew 5:38-48 All standing, the Deacon or a Priest reads the Gospel, first saying Creator Spirit, by whose aid The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. After the Gospel, the Reader says The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon Silence is kept. On Sundays and other Major Feasts there follows, all standing The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. 5

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The people may kneel for the prayers. The Prayers of the Deacon or Celebrant: Lord God, we stand humbly before you at the beginning of this day, aware that our life s breath and all our hopes lie in your hands. We beg you to hear us, as we pray: Lord, keep us in your love. Intercessor: Nurture all people waiting for Christ with the prayer and love of Christian community. Kindle the fire of Christian joy in the heart of every believer, we pray: : Lord, keep us in your love. Intercessor: Keep all leaders from the deception of self-righteousness and guide them in the ways of humility. Give compassion to those who govern, understanding to those who teach, and wisdom to all who seek it, we pray: : Lord, keep us in your love. 6

Intercessor: Take our preoccupation with wealth and comfort and transform it by the light of the gospel. Free us from selfishness and strengthen us for the work of loving our enemies, we pray: : Lord, keep us in your love. Intercessor: Renew those who feel empty or anxious with the grace and beauty of your creation. Inspire us to be ever better stewards of all you have made, we pray: : Lord, keep us in your love. Intercessor: Bring comfort to those who mourn and healing to those who are suffering especially; Dan Banks, Carolyn Weirick, Michaella Wanheng Cao, Patricia Passillas, Richard Beatie, the Ballance Family, Jan Wright, Erik Walton, Nancy Ellsworth, Jessica Lauren, Paul Munoz, Veronica Munoz-Seuss, Stefan Dietrich, Gayle MacGregor, Jenni Balance, Elizabeth Waite, Sofia Saulo, Jessica James, Fred Garside III, Rudy Franco, Betty McKenney, Sandy Mallace, Diane Webb and Kevin Dumain. Also, we continue to pray for the needs of those listed in our Welcome Bulletin this Sunday. Please add your own intercessions now; silently or aloud (Silence is kept). May they be healed and be whole, we pray: : Lord, keep us in your love. Intercessor: Look on all who have died; especially, Daniel Loren Rucker and William Lehman. Please add your own intercessions now; silently or aloud (Silence is kept). Receive them into your kingdom, to live with you for ever and ever, we pray: : Lord, keep us in your love. Intercessor: This Sunday flowers are offered at the Altar to the Glory of God in Loving Memory of Sally Shenk Williams, Vera Melkesian, Stanton Agee, and Martha and Raymond Knowles. We pray: : Lord, keep us in your love. Intercessor: Heavenly Father, this week we pray for the leaders of our government at all levels. We pray for Donald, our President, for Jerry, our Governor, and for Chin-Ho, our Mayor. Give all our leaders your wisdom and grace to serve the community, the state, and the nation for the benefit of all; we pray: : Lord, keep us in your love. The Deacon or Celebrant adds a concluding Collect: Father of Jesus Christ, open our hearts to your Word and the power of the Spirit. Give us love to discover your will and strength to carry it out today. Help us to become spiritually mature and live into your vision for us. For you are our light, for ever and ever. Amen. Confession of Sin The Deacon or Celebrant says Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. Minister and 7

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Bishop when present, or the Priest, stand and says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace The people stand. The Acolytes say to the people The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Then the Ministers and may greet one another in the name of the Lord. Welcome and Prayer for Birthdays, Anniversaries and Thanksgivings If you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary, or you would like to offer thanks for a special blessing, please come forward for prayer. The Holy Communion The Celebrant may begin the Offertory with a sentence of Scripture. Representatives of the congregation bring the people s offerings of bread and wine to the deacon or celebrant. The Offertory Anthem Let nothing ever grieve thee, Opus 30 Words: German, Paul Flemming (1609-40); tr. Walter E. Buszin (1899-1978) Music: Johannes Brahms (1833-97) Let nothing ever grieve thee, distress thee, nor fret thee; heed God's good will, my soul, be still, compose thee. Why brood all day in sorrow? Tomorrow will bring thee God's help benign and grace sublime in mercy. Be true in all endeavor, and ever do bravely; what God decrees brings joy and peace, He'll stay thee. Amen. The people stand and sing the hymn, while the offerings are presented and placed on the Altar. 8

The Presentation Hymn 424 Words: F. Pratt Green (1903-2000) Music: East Acklam, Francis Jackson (b. 1917) For the fruit of all creation The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer A Celebrant Celebrant The people remain standing. The Celebrant, whether bishop or priest, faces them and sings or says The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Celebrant and Holy, holy, holy Lord Sanctus, Benedictus, Hosanna The Celebrant continues 9

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, and Celebrant Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 10

The Blessing The Bishop when present, or the Priest, may bless the people.
