Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition November 20-26, 2016 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY Tamil Cinema Music 31 The first known instance of the use of playback in Tamil Cinema took place in 1938 in Nandakumar. The film was produced in Poona (now Pune) as a partnership venture in Marathi and Tamil with the later day Indian movie mogul AV. Meiyappan as the partner of the Tamil version. The film was directed by well known cameraman and Marathi filmmaker Keshav Rao Dhaibar. The cast included T. R. Mahalingam (his film debut), T. P. Rajalakshmi, C.V.V. Panthulu, T. S. Rajalakshmi, T.R. Ramachandran (his debut) and others. It was the first film for many of them. Helping Dhaibar for the Tamil version in the script and direction was another newcomer, later the noted writer-director and producer, A. T. Krishnaswamy (ATK). The talented but sadly underrated film music composer, S. V. Venkataraman also came into films with Nandakumar. The kid Krishna was played by Master Sethuraman. Later, as Madurai Sethuraman, he made a mark as the singer for noted Bharathanatyam dancers and toured all over the world. (A good pal of this writer, he passed away some years ago.) T. R. Mahalingam played the boy Krishna and became a star with his very first film. A song sung by the actress playing Krishna s mother Devaki was not up to mark and Meiyappan, ATK, Dhaibar and others were disappointed with the quality of her singing. Understandably they were eager to re-shoot the sequence with some other star but, for many reasons, it was not feasible. Meiyappan and others thought hard and then came up with an innovative idea. Why not replace only the sound track with another voice and shoot the song with the actress moving only her lips in sync? (The movie world lingo for synchronization ). AVM gave the go-ahead signal and a prominent classical Carnatic musician based in Bombay, Lalitha Venkataraman, was brought in and she sang that song. The scene was re-shot with the actress moving her lips to the Bombay musician s singing. And, lo, the playback system was born in Tamil cinema and Meiyappan made South Indian film history! And Lalitha Venkataraman earned the credit of being the first playback singer in Tamil cinema. Even after playback system became established and the pre-recording of songs before the shoot became technically possible, the songs were sung by the artistes themselves and not by off-screen voice-lending playback singers. One of the earliest of off -screen singers was V. R. Dhanam (sister of the noted stage, screen and TV star, late lamented V. Gopalakrishnan). The famed filmmaker of his day, Sundar Rao Nadkarni (He made films like Haridas, Shantha Sakkubai, En Manaivi, Krishna Vijayam, Sudarshan, and Mahadevi.) recorded a song for Sakkubai (1939) which he picturised on T. S. Krishnaveni. Another classical Carnatic musician who sang in films behind the screen during late 1930s was the great exponent and star performer D. K. Pattammal. Her rendering of an emotionally charged patriotic song written by celebrated Tamil writer and journalist, Kalki ( Ra. Krishnamurthy) and composed by Papanasam Sivan, Desa Sevai Seyya Vaareer, in the Tamil film classic Thyaga Bhoomi (1939) became very popular, reflecting the mood of the times when the atmosphere was charged with Indian Freedom Movement. Interestingly, this song was not issued as a gramophone record along with the other songs of the film, and was brought out later as a private disc by DKP with no mention of the origin of the song. The producers were afraid that the record might be banned by the then British Indian rulers! Other playback singers from the world of classical music include (Radha) Jayalakshmi, K. J. Yesudas, Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna, P. Leela, and M. L. Vasanthakumari. She appeared on screen in a scene in R. S. Mani s Krishna Bhakthi (1948) singing s a song in a concert in a king s court. She looked slim and very attractive in that scene! (To be continued) Discourse on Meiporul Nayanar Puranam on Monday Panampattu Ravichandran Ganapathidasan will give a discourse on Meiporul Nayanar Puranam from 6.45 p.m to 8.15 p.m on Monday, Nov. 21 in Kasi Viswanathar Temple (Kuppaiah Street, West Mambalam). November 20-26, 2016 NO HOLDS BARRED By M. A. SADANAND Paradise Lost No child living in a Rs. 3-crore house (aglut with all the best the world has produced to make a man a snob) can tell his wealthy father that he does not want to learn Kathakali, especially when he is three months short of three years. That s impudence. The anguished father complained to me that obedience is no longer a filial response. But did you prepare the tiny chap for the idea with stories of Casablanca and Parasurama? That is the foundation of all obedience...nothing like sowing the seeds of the idea with such asinine examples. Who is Casablanca? I know Parasurama, the old warrior who reclaimed Kerala from the sea with his axe. You can t blame a chap (who had smuggled himself to the Gulf at 16) for not knowing who Casablanca is. Never mind that imbecile, who did not have the common sense to run when the ship was on fire. The point here is this: Why do you want a 2-year-old boy to submit to any discipline and why for heaven s sake that fearsome outfit Kathakali? And why any coaching at all at this tender age? Let him be in his paradise for some time. You are a fine one; he is going to the Carnatic music teacher at 6:30 in the morning; at 7:15 the violin class a kilometre from there; at 8 the Kuchipudi master comes home. He is free after 8:45 until 9:30 when the school bus comes for his kindergarten. I am only asking the idiot to take Kathakali at 3 until his Karate class at 3:30. He has the entire evening after 7 to play. Is it asking too much...? His brows corrugated. You are letting the child idle for almost 3 hours! A bad thing... Why don t you send him for computer classes? It has its own languages... Cobol, Fortran. No child worth his bib should be a computer nincompoop at the ripe old age of three years. What would your neighbours say! You are telling me...i have asked a French teacher to fill in at 4:15 until 5 from tomorrow... And what do you think of German? The very thought I had! Very useful for engineering studies. Don t you think he is still lisping? German is hard on the tongue. Let s keep if for his fourth birthday no doubt you have drafted the University Reader in Malayalam to teach him his mother-tongue...the child deserves it from any good parent. How naive you are! I toured England once and was amazed at the fluency of the even one-year olds in English. You don t think my child should be less smart speaking only Malayalam at home! No. I got Professor Higgins to teach my mother and wife to speak English like a native of London. No Malayalam or Tamil. Good tennis wants them young. 5 pm to 6 pm ideal for tennis; get Leander. 6 pm to 7 pm is blank. How can you waste it? I suppose you have allotted into childhood, his own God-given fleeting programme! Bonded labour seems a picnic. Wrong, man...that s when the Quiz wizard comes in with general knowledge, and magic lessons... His pride was enviable. Friend Kuripkaalan, I suggest you let him have 30 minutes Childhood in the Kathakali-slot. I want to see the guinea pig. He can be saved from such cruel parents only by the S.P.C.A MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition Fallen street name board lying near garbage bin The name board of Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan Road, which toppled over several weeks back, was found lying near the garbage bin outside Prem Colony on the same road on Nov.17. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Drinking water contamination in Arya Gowda Road Sir, Residents of Arya Gowda Road, near Srinivasa Street junction, have been suffering from drinking water contamination for the past ten days. Metrowater workers say that the contamination is probably due to leakage from drainage pipes in Srinivasa Street where some work was carried out recently. Two days back, we closed the sump valve, removed the contaminated water and cleaned the sump. On refilling, the water again stinks. We are unable to use it for domestic purposes due to the health hazard. We appeal to Metrowater officials to immediately find the cause for the water contamination and rectify the same. B. V. Page 7 Woman in distressreunited with family by Udavum Karangal By Our Staff Almost 10 months after a woman in distress was rescued by Udavum Karagal, she was reunited with her sister s family on Oct. 23. In December last year, during the floods, a distressed woman in an almost nude state was spotted sitting by herself near a water tank in a park in Valasaravakkam. When the information reached Udavum Karangal, a team immediately rushed to the spot, rescued her and bought her to Udavum Karangal. After several days of counselling, she informed her name as Lakshmi and that she has two sons studying in Trichy, but could not recall their names or addresses. Doctors who examined her found that she had gone through severe physical abuse and was also diagnosed with schizophrenia. After prolonged therapy, her condition got stabilized. In the meantime the NGO had gathered information about her family. Her husband had committed suicide which had sent her into depression. Due to her mental instability, she had been abandoned by her in-laws. On Oct. 23, Madhavi, her sister, came with her husband to Udavum Karangal. Lakshmi was very happy to meet her sister and to go home with her. Discourses on Saisath Saritha Under the auspices of Sri Shirdi Sai Meditation Mandir (6, Sarojini Street, T.
