From the time of the confession by Simon Peter in Caesarea Philippi that Jesus was indeed the Christ (Messiah), Son of God, Son of man, Jesus began to teach (show, explain) to his disciples that he would go to Jerusalem, suffer many things of the elders, chief priests and scribes, (Sanhedrin), be killed, and on the third day/after three days be raised up from the dead. A. Psalm 16:10, For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. B. Matthew 20:17-19, And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again. 1. There was an expectation that something unusual would happen on the third day following Christ s crucifixion. II. Matthew mentions the coming passion three times. A. Scriptures: 1. Matthew 20:17, And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, B. However, other writers indicate that Jesus spoke often of his coming death. C. Events of the suffering of Christ. 1. Death would occur in Jerusalem. 2. Death would come by his own consent. 3. Death would follow his rejection by Israel. 4. Religious leaders would be instrumental in bringing about his death. 5. Jesus would be killed, crucified, not simply die. 6. He would be condemned to death (trial.) 7. Jesus would be delivered up, betrayed. 8. Gentiles would be instrumental in his death. 9. He would be mocked, scourged and made to suffer. 10. After three days he would be resurrected.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.com 9 III. Peter didn t like what he was hearing. He took Jesus aside and rebuked him for speaking of his suffering, death and resurrection. A. Peter said, These things will never happen to you. B. What Jesus was saying did not agree with Peter s ideas of the Messianic king nor of God s coming kingdom. C. Also, Peter could not envision his closest friend, Jesus, being so horribly treated. He could not bear to consider such a thing. D. Outspoken Peter was often variably on target and often far away from the mark. E. Peter loved Jesus and did not want him to be subjected to all this suffering. His intentions were good. His theology was wrong! F. Peter here took upon himself the role of instructor, corrector of the Lord! 1. Acts 10:14, But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean. 2. Matthew 17:4, Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. 3. Luke 9:33, And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for

You are a stumbling block to me. You are concerned about the things of men, not the things of God. A. Jesus called Peter Satan. How would we feel if Jesus called us Satan? 1. Peter was not satanic and depraved. 2. Peter was inadvertently tempting Jesus to do wrong, avoid the cross. B. Jesus told Peter to relinquish his role as supervisor and to resume his role as follower. 1. Jesus said these things in the hearing of all the disciples for their common good. C. From an earthly viewpoint Jesus deserved none of these things which were to befall him. D. What view did Peter have of the coming messianic kingdom? The suffering and death of the king could not be reconciled in Peter s mind with his picture of the coming kingdom. 1. Sometimes we are tempted by good well-meaning people. F. Suffering and death were most difficult for Jesus. He didn t need Peter to trip him up, be a stumbling block. 1. Matthew 26:39, And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. V. When was Jesus buried? When was he resurrected? A.
