3461 Merle Ave Modesto, CA 95355 (209) 551-0563 www.stpetermodesto.org W Second Sunday after Pentecost JUNE 3, 2018 Fundamentals of Faith: Christ Has Fulfilled the Law elcome and thank you for joining us for worship today! In our service we gather before our almighty and saving God to offer him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God s holy and powerful word and celebrate his life-giving sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home with him. The Lord s Supper (Holy Communion) The Bible tells us that those who take Communion together are to: Recognize that Christ s true body and blood are present in the Sacrament (1 Cor. 11:29), Examine themselves as Scripture instructs (1 Cor. 11:28), and Be one in faith and belief with the congregation with which they commune (1 Cor. 10:17). For these reasons, it is our practice that only those who are members of our congregation or a congregation of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) join us for Holy Communion. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a member of our body of believers or want to find out more about our Communion practice please speak to Pastor Schroeder after the service. PREPARING FOR WORSHIP After reliving the great events of the life of Christ, the worshiping Church spends half a year focusing on the teachings of Christ. The Church wears green during the season of Pentecost since the Spirit uses those teachings of Jesus to grow the faith of believers. Today we are reminded that the essence of our faith is trust in the righteousness of Christ. God revealed his holy and unchanging will for us in his law. Because we were completely unable to keep that law, Christ was sent to fulfill it as our substitute. Through faith, his righteousness becomes ours. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP You rested on the seventh day of creation, O God, and you call us now to rest and reflect and revere your name. May what we say and do in our worship and on this day bring glory to you for the spiritual rest in Jesus you give us. It is only in Jesus do we find a place to rest from the weariness our sins bring us. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen. 1 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Flowers adorning our altar this morning are given to the glory of God by Rob & Julie Mallory in celebration of their 21 st anniversary and by Jim and Tim Beehler in celebration of Jim s birthday. Minister: Pastor Daniel Schroeder Pianist: Bob Fromuth

OPENING HYMN As We Begin Another Week Christian Worship #223 CALL TO WORSHIP M: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. CONFESSION OF SINS M: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us. C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride, For sins of habit and sins of choice, For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, You should cast me away from your presence forever. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus sake. 2

ABSOLUTION M: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant: I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. LORD HAVE MERCY Mark 10:47 M: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. For the well-being of all people everywhere, that they may receive from you all they need to sustain body and life, hear our prayer, O Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. M: For the spread of your life-giving gospel throughout the world, that all who are lost in sin may be brought to faith in you, hear our prayer, O Christ. C: Christ, have mercy. M: For patience and perseverance in this life, that we may not lose the hope of heaven as we await your return, hear our prayer, O Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. M: Lord of life, live in us that we may live for you. C: Amen. 3

SONG OF PRAISE 4

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Let us pray. O God, you rule over all things in wisdom and kindness. Take away everything that may be harmful and give us whatever is good; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. THE WORD OF GOD FIRST LESSON Deuteronomy 5:12-15 The Sabbath Day law pointed ahead to real rest in Christ Observe the Sabbath day by setting it apart as holy, just as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you are to serve and perform all of your regular work, 14 but the seventh day is a sabbath rest to the Lord your God. You are not to do any regular work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock or the alien who resides inside your gates, in order that your male servant and your female servant may rest like you. 15 Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out from there with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the day of rest. (EHV) 5

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 126 There is no better response to his saving acts than to acknowledge them and worship him for them in the company of the saints. The psalm will be sung responsively by the half verse (pastor and congregation). When the LORD brought back the captives to Zion, we were like those who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. Refrain Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like streams in the desert. Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain 6

SECOND LESSON Colossians 2:13-17 The law is a shadow; Christ is the real thing Even when you were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ by forgiving us all our trespasses. 14 God erased the record of our debt brought against us by his legal demands. This record stood against us, but he took it away by nailing it to the cross. 15 After disarming the rulers and authorities, he made a public display of them by triumphing over them in Christ. 16 Therefore, do not let anyone judge you in regard to food or drink, or in regard to a festival or a New Moon or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were coming, but the body belongs to Christ. (EHV) GENERAL VERSE OF THE DAY 7

GOSPEL LESSON Mark 2:23-28 M: The Gospel according to St. Mark, chapter 2. C: Glory be to you, O Lord. The Son of Man is Lord of the law Once on a Sabbath day, Jesus was passing through the grain fields, and his disciples began to pick heads of grain as they walked along. 24 The Pharisees said to him, Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath day? 25 He replied to them, Have you never read what David did when he was in need and hungry (he and his companions)? 26 He entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest and ate the Bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for anyone to eat, except for the priests. He also gave some to his companions. 27 Then Jesus said to them, The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is the Lord even of the Sabbath. (EHV) M: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ. HYMN OF THE DAY We Now Implore God the Holy Ghost Christian Worship #190 One preacher from the mid-1200 s wrote in a sermon about this hymn: It is indeed a useful song. Therefore you should desire to sing it more and more. You should sing to God and call upon Him with all your heart and with pure devotion The man is wise, who first brought this hymn to light. This ancient hymn was apparently used on Pentecost Sunday during a ceremony in which a wooden dove (a symbol of the Holy Spirit) was lowered from the roof at the front of the church or a living dove was let loose, a tradition still carried on in some European cathedrals. 8

SERMON Deuteronomy 5:12-15 Take Time to Get Some Rest NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. OFFERING The members of St. Peter Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Guests at St. Peter are welcome to participate in the offering but need not feel obligated to do so. 9

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Spoken by Minister THE SACRAMENT St Peter Lutheran Church practices member communion. We invite confirmed members to come forward to partake of the Sacrament. Thank you for your consideration. M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is good and right so to do. M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who has called us to be his own so that we may live under him in his kingdom and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join in their glorious song: 10

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (SANCTUS) 11

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING M: Blessed are you, O Lord of heaven and earth. We praise and thank you for sending your Son, Jesus Christ, and we remember the great acts of love through which he has ransomed us from sin, death, and the devil s power. By his incarnation, he became one with us. By his perfect life, he fulfilled your holy will. By his innocent death, he overcame hell. By his rising from the grave, he opened heaven. Invited by your grace and instructed by your Word, we approach your table with repentant and joyful hearts. Strengthen us through Christ s body and blood, and preserve us in the true faith until we feast with him and all his ransomed people in glory everlasting. C: Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my (+) body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my (+) blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. 12
