He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Luke 4:18 19 (NKJ) It is the vision of Mt. Olive to be a church that is intentional in its efforts to identify and meet the needs of broken, hurt and oppressed people in the greater Glen Allen area through the message and ministry of Jesus Christ. From the Pastor's Desk This month we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I encourage you to focus on the awesome resurrection power of God. When there is seemingly no life or hope we know that God is able. It has been said that "there are no hopeless situations: there are only people who have grown hopeless about them." Because of the resurrection we can keep hope alive. Keep the faith and remember God is worthy to be praised. Lenten Season March 9 April 23, 2011 (The pulpit attire is purple) 2 Lent: The forty days are taken from the days of temptations and fasting Jesus spent in the wilderness. The forty days extend from Ash Wednesday to Easter Eve and contains six Sundays. General Theme For This Quarter: WE WORSHIP GOD This quarter s study offers a New Testament survey of worship in the early church. Hymns, prayers, apocalyptic visions, and letters of instruction reveal the spiritual culture and practice of the first Christians and provide contemporary believers with a biblical model of worship. We hope that you will join us as we are focusing on: UNIT #2 ANCIENT WORDS OF PRAISE This unit takes the learners through the final weeks of Lent and into the Easter season. Each week s lesson is selected from a different book of the New Testament, but all share the common theme of praising Jesus Christ. THIS WEEK S: REMEMBERING JESUS CHRIST 2 Timothy 2:8 15 At times under Roman rule, Christians were viewed as criminals. Therefore, in this passage, Paul reminds Timothy of Jesus resurrection and Davidic descent in order to give him courage to endure in difficult times. NEXT WEEK S: April 10, 2011 PRAISE BUILDS US UP Jude 17 25 This lesson gives assurance for living out our faith daily in Jesus Christ and discloses how praise builds up the Body of Christ. MOBC HOW TO ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST INTO YOUR HEART Perhaps while reading the announcements you realized you have never made a Christian commitment. Don t delay that decision! We encourage you to embrace God s love today and receive the salvation that only Jesus Christ gives. Here are five simple steps you can take to find assurance of salvation. 1. Recognize your need. The Bible tell us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Rom. 3:23) All of us are sinners, and we must admit our need for a Savior. 2. Repent of your sins. Our sins create a wall that separates us from God. By confessing our sins and turning from them, you will find forgiveness. The Bible promises: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). 3. Believe in Jesus. God sent His only Son to die so that He could pay for all our sins. Put your faith in Him and believe in His power to save you. The Bible says, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16). 4. Receive His salvation. God has given us a great gift in His Son, but we must receive His gift. Thank Him for loving and forgiving you, and ask Him to live in your heart. His promise to us is clear: But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12). 5. Confess your faith. The Bible assures us: If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom. 10:9). You have been born again and are now part of God s family. Tell someone else what Jesus has done in your life! MUSIC MINISTRY Mon. 04 Chosen Generation @ 7:30 PM Tues. 05 Teen Dance @ 6:30 PM Men of Impact Choir @ 7:00 PM Wed. 06 Children Dance @ 6:00 PM LENT The beginning of Lent is Ash Wednesday (in memory of the Old Testament sackcloth and ashes, suggesting deep sorrow and penitence), and continues for excluding Sundays prior to Easter. The word Lent probably comes form he Saxon word lencten, meaning spring. The season calls attention to Christ s temptation in the wilderness and is a time of self examination, penitence, devotion, and renewal. Two weeks in Lent are given special significance. The firs is Passion Week, which runs from Passion Sunday (two Sundays before Easter) through Palm Sunday Eve. The second is Holy Week and is from palm Sunday (one Sunday before Easter) through Easter Eve. There are special days during Holy Week: Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday (Maundy is derived from the Latin for command, from Christ s command to his disciples in the Upper Room on Thursday evening before his crucifixion on Friday), and Good Friday, emphasizing the death of Christ. The color for Lent is purple; the same as for Advent. The one exception is Good Friday, whose color is black, signifying death. A form of Lent, preparation for Easter, was practiced as early as the 2nd Century. At first is was for a period of 40 hours, equal to the time Christ spent in the tomb. Then the time was lengthened to 6 days; and finally to 40 days, representing the 40 years the children of Israel spent in the wilderness, the 40 days Moses spent on the mount, the 40 days Jesus was in the wilderness, and the 40 hours he spent in the tomb. Sundays are not counted in Lent because it is always a feast day a Little Easter. ATTENTION MEMBERS AND FRIENDS!!! Have you ever dreamed of participating in a foreign missions trip?
