The Second Sunday after Pentecost June 3, 2018 Welcome Visitors! Out of a broken and divided world, all people are welcomed into the whole body of Jesus Christ at St. John s. As children of one God, together we join in worship to experience the transforming love of our Savior. All who seek the Lord are invited to share in Holy Communion. We believe that Christ is present in the bread and wine with his own body and blood. You may take the wine from an individual glass or the common cup. If needed, grape juice is available from the individual glasses and gluten free wafers are available from the pastor. Those who do not commune may come forward for a blessing, indicating this by crossing the hands at the heart. A nursery is available for children during the 10:30 am service. You are cordially invited to join us at the Welcome Table following each service. Personal Listening Devices and Large Print Bulletins are available from an usher. www.stjohnsbeaufort.org

The Second Sunday after Pentecost June 3, 2018 PRELUDE Hope (Meditation #14) Turner Annette Godsey, Piano WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CONFESSION OF SINS Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love. Amen. Trusting God s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Eternal God our creator, in you we live and move and have our being. Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses, and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. In the mercy of almighty God, Christ died for us while we still were sinners; and for his sake, God + forgives you all your sins. Amen. GATHERING HYMN Here In This Place WOV 718 (blue) GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. CANTICLE OF PRAISE

PRAYER OF THE DAY God of heaven and earth, before the foundation of the universe and the beginning of time you are the triune God: Author of creation, eternal Word of salvation, life-giving Spirit of wisdom. Guide us to all truth by your Spirit, that we may proclaim all that Christ has revealed and rejoice in the glory he shares with us. Glory and praise to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. PSALM Psalm 81:1-10 1 Sing with joy to God our strength and raise a loud shout to the God of Jacob. 2 Raise a song and sound the timbrel, the merry harp, and the lyre. 3 Blow the ram s horn at the new moon, and at the full moon, the day of our feast; 4 for this is a stat- ute for Israel, a law of the God of Jacob. 5 God laid it as a solemn charge upon Joseph, going out over the land of Egypt, where I heard a voice I did not know: 6 I eased your shoulder from the burden; your hands were set free from the grave- digger s basket. 7 You called on me in trouble, and I de- livered you; I answered you from the secret place of thunder and tested you at the wa- ters of Meribah. 8 Hear, O my people, and I will ad- monish you: O Israel, if you would but lis- ten to me! 9 There shall be no strange god among you; you shall not worship a foreign god. 10 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION GOSPEL Mark 2:23-3:6 The holy gospel according to St. Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. 23 One sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath? 25 And he said to them, Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? 26 He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions. 27 Then he said to them, The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; 28 so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath. 3:1 Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. 2 They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the sabbath, so that they might accuse him. 3 And he said to the man who had the withered hand, Come forward. 4 Then he said to them, Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to kill? But they were silent. 5 He looked around at them with anger; he was grieved at their hardness of heart and said to the man, Stretch out your hand. He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 The Pharisees went out and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON Pastor Craig Boehlke

HYMN OF THE DAY O Day of Rest and Gladness from Evangelical Lutheran Worship

APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Filled with the Holy Spirit, we join with the church in every place, praying for the world that God so loves. Each petition ends: Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. By the sure guidance of your Holy Spirit, O God, we lift up our prayers in trust and thanksgiving; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. OFFERING ANTHEM Hymn Medley Heather Lynn Hamilton and Gloria Bockelman, Piano OFFERTORY

OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray. Merciful God, you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen. LITURGY OF HOLY COMMUNION PREFACE

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father: Endless is your mercy and eternal your reign. You have filled all creation with light and life; heaven and earth are full of your glory. We praise you for the grace shown to your people in every age: the promise to Israel, the rescue from Egypt, the gift of the promised land, the words of the prophets; and, at this end of all the ages, the gift of your Son, who proclaimed the good news in word and deed and was obedient to your will, even to giving his life. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Therefore, O God, with this bread and cup we remember the life our Lord offered for us. And, believing the witness of his resurrection, we await his coming in power to share with us the great and promised feast. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Send now, we pray, your Holy Spirit, that we who share in Christ s body and blood may live to the praise of your glory and receive our inheritance with all your saints in light. Amen. Come, Holy Spirit. Join our prayers with those of your servants of every time and every place, and unite them with the ceaseless petitions of our great high priest until he comes as victorious Lord of all. Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. COMMUNION An invitation to communion is on the cover of the bulletin. COMMUNION SONG

COMMUNION MUSIC Morning Prayer Schinske Moment By Moment Penthel Annette Godsey, Piano BLESSING AFTER COMMUNION The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. Amen. BLESSING May God, whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine, grant you the gifts of faith and hope. Almighty God, Father, + Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen. SENDING HYMN Let Us Go Now to the Banquet from Evangelical Lutheran Worship

DISMISSAL Go in peace. The Spirit sends us forth! Thanks be to God! POSTLUDE + + +

The Biblical focus text for next Sunday is provided in advance so that you can begin reflecting. Sunday, June 10 Mark 3:20-35 Jesus went home; 20 and the crowd came together again, so that Jesus and the disciples could not even eat. 21 When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, He has gone out of his mind. 22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons. 23 And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. 27 But no one can enter a strong man s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. 28 Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin 30 for they had said, He has an unclean spirit. 31 Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you. 33 And he replied, Who are my mother and my brothers? 34 And looking at those who sat around him, he said, Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.
