He was ordained a priest on September 23, 1600. Vincent devoted himself entirely to the alleviation of the sufferings of the poor, and to that purpose established the Confraternities of Charity, later known as the Ladies of Charity, in 1617. In 1625 he founded the Congregation of the Mission, his community of priests and brothers. With Louise de Marillac, he cofounded the Daughters of Charity in 1633. Vincent died in Paris on September 27, 1660 and was canonized in 1737. Pope Leo XIII declared him patron saint of all works of charity. Anthony s Faith Formation Corner Matthew 20:1-16: Workers at the Eleventh Hour Peculiar to Matthew, this Gospel passage is usually known as the parable of the workers in the vineyard. I suppose that in this age of ours when the questions of labor, just wage and economic justice dominate the minds of the working class, this parable can have some relevance. The point of the story is quite simple: all the workers, both the latecomers (at the eleventh hour) and those who have toiled hard since the morning (the first hour), get paid the same amount! Modern readers surely would sympathize with the early birds, and only rightly so: since they worked more, should they not deserve to get paid more? However, the parable is NOT about economic justice: rather, it is about the Kingdom of heaven. If we look at the text itself, we see that the landowner/employer did not deceive anyone. He was NOT unfair. First of all, the very fact that the workers have a chance to work to earn some money is a sign of the generosity of the owner. They needed him, not vice versa. ALL of the workers, after all, did agree to the usual daily wage But that is the text. How about the con-text? The Gospel of Matthew was addressed to an early church community in Antioch. Its members included Christians both of Jewish and Gentile origins. Although in theory they were all ONE in Christ, in reality the rift between Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians was very obvious. Those of Jewish origins still considered themselves superior. In the story, the early workers represent Jewish Christians; the latecomers symbolize Gentile Christians. The author of Matthew s Gospel wanted to remind the community that there was no superiority. For us Christians today, this parable is also of great importance. It reminds us of the primacy of God s grace. No one merits the Kingdom of heaven, since it is a free gift. Not even people like St. Francis or Dominic or Mother Teresa can claim that they have earned the Kingdom. That we are all workers in the Lord s vineyard is a gift itself from God. No one merits to be there in the first place. What about the latecomers? What if notorious dictators like Hitler and Napoleon repented and the Lord accepted them into his Kingdom? Shall we say with the workers from the first hour: These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day's burden and heat? In the last analysis, the parable warns us about presuming on God s grace. Grace, by its very definition, is freely given and is not something merited. According to a Protestant commentary on Matthew, grace that can be calculated or expected is no longer grace. Grace is always amazing grace That is to say, the way the Lord works is always amazing and surprising; and his way can always reverse our normal human expectations. Ba cây kim, một dài hai ngắn, cho ta biết được thời giờ để có những sinh hoạt thích hợp. Bài dụ ngôn hôm nay phác họa hình ảnh Thiên Chúa nhân lành qua một chi tiết dí dỏm: có vẻ như Ngài không biết dùng đồng hồ như con người! Các giờ được kể ra (giờ một, ba, sáu, chín, mười một) cho thấy một ông chủ tất bật ra vào để chiêu mộ thợ, bất kể sáng hay chiều, sớm hay muộn. Ưu tư chính của ông chủ không phải là giờ giấc, nhưng là sợ các người thợ không có công ăn việc làm. Chuyện ông chủ không biết dùng đồng hồ ấy còn rõ ràng hơn nữa khi tính tiền công cho thợ. Người thợ làm từ sáng sớm cũng như người lao động từ năm giờ chiều, đều lãnh lương như nhau: một quan tiền, lương công nhật người Do Thái thời đó. Trả lương như ông chủ này chắc chắn sẽ thua lỗ te tua! Mời Bạn: Bạn đã rút ra kết luận rồi đó: Thiên Chúa chính là người chủ nhân hậu. Ngài sẵn lòng ban tặng ơn cứu độ cho mọi người, được diễn tả qua hình ảnh gọi vào vườn nho và lãnh một quan tiền. Ngài không dùng đồng hồ, một loại thước đo giá trị, công trạng, bởi vì Ngài quá nhân lành. Chia sẻ: Bạn rút ra bài học gì từ sự kiện Thiên Chúa không biết dùng đồng hồ? Escuchamos el eco de este sentimiento en el refrán del salmo responsorial del día: "Cerca está el Señor de los que lo invocan" (Salmo 145:18a). San Pablo es la encarnación de alguien que constantemente buscó al Señor. En la cita que leímos hoy de su carta a los filipenses, encontramos a san Pablo hacia el final de su vida, vida que describe como en completa consonancia con Cristo. Escribe: "Porque para mí, la vida es Cristo" (Filipenses 1:21). Para saber lo que significa vivir una vida de completo acuerdo con Cristo basta mirar el Evangelio de hoy. Allí encontramos que el amor y la misericordia de Dios son inconmensurables para todos los que buscan e invocan al Señor. The Orange County Diocesan Children's Choir will sing a Concert, Mass at St. Peters and in Assisi at the Basilica of St. Francis, and for the PAPAL Mass on the Solemnity of the Epiphany with the Sistine Choir. This is a huge honor and we need your help! Diocesan Children's Choir The Diocesan Children's Choir of Orange, begun in 2016, rehearses on average three Saturday's per month. The Choir sings for the major liturgies of the diocese and one Saturday evening Mass at Christ Cathedral. It is presently made up of 63 young musicians who come from throughout the Diocese of Orange, over 20 parishes. In their first year, they have sing at several special diocesan liturgies, in festivals, at several parishes throughout the diocese, in two major concerts at Christ Cathedral and are now preparing for a trip to Rome.
