They shared food. They prayed and helped one another. They became a church simply because they had one thing in common, they believed in Jesus together. This summer Our Savior s Way and Open Arms are getting back to that core idea of together. Beginning with our Summer Kick-Off Celebration on June 8th, Our Savior s Way and Open Arms will be focusing on what it means to be together. Join us, June 8th from 3:30 to 7:30 pm as we kick-off our summer together. There will be games, activities, service opportunities, food, and so much more! We invite you to join us as we experience what it means to be together. Together as church and school. Together as friends and neighbors. Together as children of God. Join us as we see how being together influences who we are as we play, create, worship, pray, serve, love, sing, talk, read, and eat. We hope this summer will bring you together with others from your school and church. The Summer Kick-Off Celebration on June 8th is just the beginning. There will be different activities that both our church and school families are invited to attend as we remember who we are, one church and school created and working together. Please join us as we experience the summer together. Each week in worship we will focus on a different aspect of Together but we want to especially invite you to be a part of our activities on July 29th as we create something together and August 26th when we celebrate and eat together. More information about all of our summer plans will be available June 8th at our Summer Kick-Off Celebration! We are looking forward to seeing you there! Contact Pastor Justin Kumfer for more details at pastor.kumfer@oswlc.org

Care Did You Know? Lutheran Church Extension Fund DID YOU KNOW... that just as you re watching your flowers and plants grow, you can also watch your savings grow? With an investment partnership with the Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF), you can see your earnings grow while seeing ministry grow too. Experience the ministry dividend difference with an LCEF investment! For more information and an investment application, please contact Wallace Horton an Our Savior s Way member and LCEF advocate. Wallace Horton lcef.org elloorgan@verizon.net Stressed? Discouraged? Lonely? Don't Suffer Alone. Help Is Available. Sometimes we fall into a trap where we think it s a sign of weakness to ask for help. So, when we re stressed, discouraged, or lonely, we try to keep our struggles hidden and are reluctant to ask for help. However, that s not God s plan. Galatians 6:2 says, Bear one another s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. God wants us to care for others and allow others to care for us in our time of need. If you re struggling inside, don t suffer alone. Ask for help. We ve got a team of Stephen Ministers who are ready to provide confidential one-on-one care, encouragement, and support to help you through a tough time. Find out more about Stephen Ministry by talking with one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to bring God s love and care into your life. Our First priority is to take time to be with God in worship. Our Second priority is to spend time with fellow believers and grow in God s love together. And our Third priority is to serve and share God s love with those who do not know Him. Those who are actively worshipping, participating in small groups, and serving find the greatest joy and faith in Jesus Christ. Fall Church-Wide Small Group Emphasis We are excited to share with you that this fall Pastor Mann will be sharing the details about the NEW vision for the ministry of Our Savior s Way. This vision was the result of months of prayer, conversation with the staff, members of the congregation, and Greg Gibbs, a consultant with Auxano. The elements of the full church-wide emphasis will be similar to the Believe Series where the message was shared in worship, studied in small groups, and applied to our individual lives. This summer a small group study based on the church s new vision will be written to be used in all of our small groups. Please pray for this new emphasis and that God will use it to strengthen us in His love and instill in us a passion to reach out with the Gospel to all who do not know Him. New Small Groups Intergenerational Fellowship Matt and Melissa Mitchell recently joined Our Savior's Way and began a new small group that would allow their children and families to participate together in studying God s word. This past March they launched Intergenerational Fellowship that meets in their home in Reston. Sabbatical Sabbatical Pastor Mann s Summer Sabbatical 1. What is a sabbatical? The word sabbatical comes from Sabbath. Sabbath means rest and for a pastor, a sabbatical is a defined period for rest, reflection, and renewal away from the constant demands and pressures of ministry. 3. Why is Pastor Mann taking a sabbatical now? This year Pastor Mann will begin his 25 th year of ministry at Our Savior s Way. The Mission and Ministry Servant Leaders Group, along with the Pastoral Care Committee agreed to grant Pastor Mann an eight-week sabbatical. 4. What does a sabbatical cost? Pastor Mann s compensation will continue through the sabbatical. In addition, some continuing education dollars have been budgeted for use during the sabbatical. 5. When will it start and end? The sabbatical will begin on the Monday after Father s Day and will continue through the third week of August. Pastor Mann will be back in the office during that week to prepare for congregational reentry. 6. What does Pastor Mann hope to accomplish on his sabbatical? Time with family; a time for reflection and spiritual retreat at The Cove (Billy Graham s retreat center in North Carolina); a Mission Trip to Haiti; a visit to the West Coast to hear his son David sing in the Oregon Bach Festival and to visit his son Andrew in Monterey, California. Sally and Pastor Mann will visit various churches on Sunday mornings to talk with their pastors and gather new ideas to bring back to Our Savior s Way. 7. Who is going to be our pastor when Pastor Mann is gone? At our Savior s Way, we are blessed with pastors. Pastor Labuhn will continue in his role as administrator and will be the decision-maker while Pastor Mann is gone. Pastor Kumfer will continue to work with the families of Open Arms and the church. Pastor Peterson will continue his excellent work with the small groups. And Pastor Wiechmann will continue to make calls and visits to the elderly and hospitalized. 8. What if a family member dies and I need pastoral care? If a loved one dies, you will absolutely have Pastor Mann s sympathies and prayers, but we have an excellent and very capable ministry team. Pastors Labuhn, Kumfer, Peterson, and Wiechmann are wellqualified and capable to take care of difficult problems while Pastor Mann is gone. 9. What if I need pastoral care and I really want to talk to Pastor Mann? Our Savior s Way hopes that you will reach out to one of our other excellent pastors or to one of our Stephen Ministers to walk with you through the hard times. If you really need to speak with Pastor Mann, please wait until he gets back in mid-august. 10. What if I bump into Pastor Mann at the store? What should we do? Please say hello and give him a hug. He ll be missing you and is happy to see you! And of course, Sally and Pastor Mann will be in Ashburn from time to time during his sabbatical. 12. What does Pastor Mann need from us while he is away? Continue to show up and be a church. Pastor Kumfer and the rest of the staff have put together an exciting Sunday morning program called TOGETHER. It begins June 24th. Each Sunday we will talk about how we play, create, worship, pray, serve, love, sing, talk, read, and eat together, and how this influences who we are as believers and disciples of Jesus Christ. Each week someone connected to our church community will talk about their experiences with different aspects of Together and how they see this aspect growing God s people. 14. What happens when Pastor Mann gets back? Eat your Wheaties! He ll be ready to run! Pastor Mann is looking forward to the Congregational Picnic at the end of August so that he can quickly re-connect with all of you. 17. What else does Pastor Mann want us to know? That he is deeply thankful for the opportunity you have given him and is grateful for the additional time he will be able to spend with his family. It is Pastor Mann s privilege and joy to be your pastor. He will miss you and looks forward to seeing you all again in August! Pastor Mann pastor.mann@oswlc.org
