If you have not sent your child s order yet, please do so as soon as possible. It is mandatory that every student at BCMS has an Earthquake Comfort Kit. Insha Allah, all the students will be fully equipped with a Comfort Kit by the middle of October. We are already in the month of October and the Fall weather is brining rain and colder temperatures. It is mandatory that your child is properly dressed and has a proper jacket to keep him/her dry and warm. Pedestrian safety for our students and families is one of our utmost concerns at BCMS. Please ensure that you always walk within the yellow pedestrian pathway, when walking between the Masjid, school and vehicle. Please drive slowly as soon as you enter the parking lot and respect the right of ways for the school busses and pedestrians. We will be implementing a new Pedestrian Safety Policy in the coming weeks. Wassalam Shuaib Yunush Acting Principal BC Muslim School 1
Theme of the Month Respect Respect: Respect is thinking and acting in a positive way about yourself or others. It is thinking and acting in a way that shows others you care about their feelings and their well-being. Respect is an attitude of honoring people and caring about their rights. We show respect by speaking and acting with courtesy. Being respectful is treating others, the way we want to be treated. Respect includes of our family or school, which make life orderly and Peaceful. Respect is of great importance in everyday life. As Muslims, we are taught to our parents, teachers, elders, school rules, family rules and other people s feelings, opinions and rights. Importance of respect: Much of the universal values and virtues that contribute to the good of the individual and society and affirm our human dignity are derived from the value of respect and the value of responsibility. We need respect to collaborate and to have a peaceful world. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: No youth will honor an old man without Allah (AWT) appointing one to honor him when he is old. (Reported by At-Tirmidhi) He who does not respect the elders and does not show love for the young ones in not from amongst us (i.e. is not a true believer). (Reported by Abu Dawud) So we should respect each other regardless age, race or religion, in order to be respected. BC Muslim School 2
Hajj Hajj is one of the main pillars of Islam. It s that great time of the year again. The best 10 days in the sight of Allah (SWT), is the 10 days of Dhul hijjah. Our students learned about the importance of these 10 days and they raced to earn thawab by doing good deeds and giving sadaqa. They also learned about the importance of thikr so the whole school started each day with takbirat since the 1st of Dhul hijah till the 9th. Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar La Ilaha Illallah, Wallahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Wallilahil Hamd Health and Well-Being Day Oct 22, 2014 A healthy lifestyle helps a child maintain a healthy weight and build strong bones and muscles. Eating right and getting daily physical exercise benefit s a child s mental health. Physical activity improves a child s ability to learn by increasing alertness and by reducing anxiety and stress. Working cooperatively in a team helps to build a child s social skills and sportsmanship. This year, our school will be beginning an initiative to promote a healthy lifestyle both physically and mentally. Each month, there will be day dedicated to promoting the healthy lifestyle using different activities in a team setting similar to the annual BCMS Sports Day. Our first Health and Well-Being Day is on October 22 nd. SICK STUDENTS If your child needs to take medicine while at school, please make sure you fill out the Medical Consent Form at the office. We cannot dispense any medication without this form. We also request that the medicine stays in the office for safety reasons; as some medicines might need refrigeration. DARE PROGRAM The Grade 5 students have recently started the DARE Program at BCMS. The DARE Program helps students understand the adverse affects of drugs and alcohol, as well as giving them different strategies to use when dealing with negativity and stress in their life. This year, the DARE Program is being taught by Constable Sangha from the Richmond RCMP. We are very excited to participate in the DARE program as it has proven to be a successful part of the RCMP s Community Prevention Education Continuum. Terry Fox Run On Tuesday September 30 th, the BC Muslim School participated in the annual Terry Fox Run. The purpose of this day was to raise funds for cancer research. We also had a competition between all the classes for the most laps completed by the students. Congratulations to Grade 2B and Grade 5A for winning the competition and receiving a set of PE equipment for their classroom. Cancer is a disease that affects many people in different ways. We would like to thank everyone that donated money to the Canadian Cancer Society. The Canadian Cancer Society is the largest national charitable funder of cancer research in Canada. The total amount raised was $215.00 for the Canadian Cancer Society. May Allah reward all of you for donating and give you barakah! (Ameen). BC Muslim School 5
Earthquake Comfort Kit As many of you know that we are living in an earthquake zone. It is a good idea to take precaution. The more kids (and grown-ups) understand the truth about the Earthquakes, the less anxiety they may have. You and you family can cope best by preparing for a disaster or emergency before it happens. Make sure your kids are aware that they may be separated from you for a while, but that you will come and get them when it is safe. To ease the anxiety of the children during an emergency, it is recommended that they have a small comfort kit. We appreciate your assistance in supplying these critical items to ensure a measure of comfort to your child if an earthquake should occur. Through the cooperation and generosity of the parents of our students, we can be prepared to meet the needs of all. It is mandatory for all the children to have earthquake comfort kit in place. So that they are prepared for any unforeseen circumstance. Volunteers Needed We are always in a need of volunteers. There are many school events throughout the school year. If you would like to contribute your valuable time to school by volunteering for school events, please contact the school office at 604-270-2511 or PAC (Parents Advisory Committee). BCMS Milk Program We will be beginning the Milk program (for Term 1) on October 9 th at the school. BCMS is promoting healthy eating and healthier lifestyle with our students. Milk is an essential nutrient for your child. BC Muslim School 6
