Objections to Baptism
Objections to the necessity to baptism You are teaching water salvation Not so! Examples: Naaman (2 Kgs 5) Blind man (John 9) Did water save them? No! They were saved AFTER they obeyed!
Objections to the necessity to baptism Baptism is a work thereby nullify the grace of God Not so, baptism is an expression of faith not of boastful works (Eph. 2:8-9)
Many different kinds of works: Works of the flesh (Gal. 5:19-21) Works of the Law of Moses (Gal. 2:21) Boastful works of Man s devising (Eph. 2:9; Mt. 19:1-7) Works of God (Jn. 6:28-29) What kind of work is baptism? - A WORK OF GOD!
Objections to the necessity to baptism The thief on the cross wasn t baptized I wonder why they single out the thief. Why not The rich young ruler (Mt. 19:16ff)
Questions Was the thief baptized? May have been Mk. 1:5 Was the thief saved? Yes! Can we be saved like him? No! Ex. Foy Wallace, You may be a thief, but you won t be saved like this thief. Why not?
Why wasn t the thief baptized? He lived under a different law than we do - the Law of Moses The OT Law ended at the cross Col. 2:14 (NKJV) 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Why wasn t the thief baptized? Jesus will had not taken effect Example: In your will you leave your house to XYZ charity. One day they came and say, Leave, it is in your will they we get your house. You would tell them, Yes, after my death! then you would change your will to ABC charity!
Why wasn t the thief baptized? What does this have to do with a man being saved like the thief? Jesus promise to the thief was before his death. After His death, His testament ONLY is of force; thus (Heb. 9:16-17; Rom. 7:1-4)
Objections to the necessity to baptism Baptism is not water baptism, but the baptism of the Holy Spirit Baptism of the Holy Spirit was promised to only a few and it was never commanded (Mt. 3:10-11; Acts 2:38-39) Today, there is only one baptism (Eph. 4:5) - water baptism for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38).
Conclusion One baptism in the future you don t want to receive Baptism of fire Matthew 3:11 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
